The other thing re: the Civil Service is they don’t all just sit in offices. Apart from customer facing staff in job centres, call centres etc you have the Ministry of Justice for example. There’s 60k + civil servants who work for them but only about 10% are what people think of as typical civil servants. The rest are working in courts up and down the land or are probation officers or prison officers etc. The Home Office includes the Border Force, etc. That’s before all the extra red tape from Brexit. It’s just another lie from Truss to appeal to the membership

Personally I think Maddison would be the biggest statement signing so far. It’s taking the best player from a side that a season ago were miles ahead of us. Bruno obviously is a star and a massive statement, as was Trippier, but I just feel signing probably the best (or close to best) player outside the top 6 from a PL rival is a real statement of intent.

Bruno, at the time for me was a significant risk - as I think the acquisition of ANY overseas player who's never played in the English game before is a risk so whilst I think he's an absolute star and prove to be a quality acquisition, I didn't at that stage see it as the biggest statement. Trippier was more of a statement signing for me.
