No John Macnamee? Here he is chinning Jack Charlton and then about to chin Bremner. ( he’s already sparked the keeper )7 points

Apparently he was, at one time, in a psychedelic prog rock band with Vangelis (of Bladerunner soundtrack fame). And they did a concept album based on the Book of Revelation. Demis Roussos I mean, not Elanga.6 points

Aye, exactly. During the halcyon days of Dan Ashworth. Back when people had transfers to talk about in the transfer thread. It's depressing reading posts from pensioners talking about the music of their youth tbh.5 points

Yeah I fell into that trap too! 'Medicine Head' released 'Dark Side of the Moon' in 1972, 12 months before Pink Floyd released 'The Dark Side of the Moon'. And yes, I did call the quiz master a cunt!5 points

Sounds to me like they’re trying to get one over on the new lad at work. Did you manage to find the tartan paint they sent you out to get?4 points

Sign him up. Elanga I mean, and Demis Roussos. Dig him up first. Fun fact: I was at the Herodion at the foot of the Acropolis for his performance in 2010. His first in Greece for 37 years according to Google. And by at I mean wandering around outside like a tourist on their first night in Athens.4 points

its the transfer thread. you've got to fill the void with something. for example, this '73 glamrock masterpiece...3 points

I was listening to TMS yesterday and they were talking about the importance of having an established top 7 going into the Ashes. We have that now Pope has found some form, and Bethell breathing down his neck will hopefully spur him on. And despite the criticism of Bazball, often justified in its early stages, what Stokes and McCullum have done is create an atmosphere where batters play their natural game now while also adapting to the game situation. The questions for me are still about the bowling attack. Agree with Alex that a fit Stokes helps provide balance but it would be great to have a pool of genuine pace bowlers that we can rotate in Australia. We need to wrap Wood up in cotton wool so he’s fit. Play bowlers more suited to English conditions against India if that’s what needed to endure Wood is on the flight. Archer feels like a Hail Mary pass at this stage but it would be amazing if it comes off and he’s part of the Ashes squad.3 points

He looks super fit too. A bit rusty with the bat but that’s to be expected after all that time out and he’s still soneone to be feared at number 63 points

Mention of Pink Floyd and 1972 reminds me of the worst fucking pub quiz wipeout question I was subjected to: "Which band, in 1972, released the album 'Dark Side of the Moon'?"3 points

John Anderson's top 5 hardest ever Newcastle players: 5th - Peter Jackson 4th - Kenny Wharton 3rd - Brian Kilcline 2nd - David McCreery 1st - Billy Whitehurst Whilst I won't argue these are notable suggestions, I can't help but think there's some that have been overlooked. Duncan Ferguson for instance.2 points

Tell you what like that slap head cunt Mitchell has a lot to answer for. Look at what he's done to this place.2 points

The other thing I would say is having Stokes able to actually bowl gives the team the sort of balance it has lacked for a few years now.2 points

Apparently it’s the only ground since the analysis began (think it includes something like 80 odd test venues) where the average amount of runs per wicket increases by innings as the match progresses. So that would have possibly fed into the decision too. I still think it was wrong but they won in some style so I guess it doesn’t matter.2 points
-
yeah - it could have backfired but i can see why stokes decided to put the in. i also agree with tom that it was an arrogant move, but one with some reasoning behind it. they're rightly confident in chasing down a target on a decent pitch though. they no longer seem certain to collapse when wickets start falling. that's multiple chases of 300+ to win games in recent years. feels like we're moving into the second chapter of bazball. they're still playing aggressively, ticking along at well over 4 an over with the bat, but it's not as macho/brainless as it seemed at first.2 points

I thought Carse was very unlucky with the figures he had for the test. He was genuinely threatening throughout and took big wickets.2 points
-
I would hope Archer has at least one more county game before he comes in tbh even if deemed fit he must be undercooked to play a 5 day test. Not sure how you'd change the team at the minute tbh.2 points
-
A bit of genuine pace and bounce makes all the difference though, doesn’t it? As these days even the relatively poor tailenders can all hold a bat. England have struggled at times with that lack of variation in their attack when the ball isn’t doing much. And while it’s great to see Archer playing red ball cricket again, the performances of Tongue and Carse should mean there’s absolutely no rush to get him back in the England test side.2 points

It's even called "666". Absolutely zero subtlety and all the better for it.2 points

I guess the flip side is that they may consider that Elanga is at the peak of his value based on a season where Forest exceeded expectations by a great deal and based on his age and length of contract. They may fancy that they could turn that fee into a couple of players of promise from a lower cost market for the upcoming season where they'll (like us) have a busier schedule.2 points

I don't know why Forest would even consider strengthening a direct rival unless they can take us to the cleaners, or are desperate for the money. Under either scenario you'd think there would be better value options out there if they don't welcome our interest. I just hope we don't waste huge amounts of time chasing a club who doesn't really want to sell, like Guehi last season.2 points

Or we'll sign 6 players in the week it's down, stifling all of our ability to be excited about it2 points

We wouldn’t be bidding unless we’d already got word that the player is interested. Up to him now to dig his heels in and go on strike. Sorry, I’ve just realised who he plays for.2 points

Yes but that's history washing and goes against the "people's club" narrative.2 points

Didn't the Moores Pools money just bankroll them?2 points

But they generate their own money just like they did in the 2nd division all of a sudden in the early 60s to poach the up and coming Shankly and let him build the club to generate their own money. If only PSR had been a thing starting from the beginning of the 20th century, eh?2 points
