  2. ACCRINGTON Stanley have been issued with a winding-up petition over £300,000 of unpaid taxes. In a statement released this afternoon, the club revealed that it owed £300,000 to HM Revenue and Customs. HMRC has submitted a petition to wind up the club in the high court over the debt. The hearing is set for June 10. Club chiefs have put much of the blame on falling attendances and the collapse of sponsor Fraser Eagle. Chief executive Rob Heys said: "Although we do not look to make excuses the arrears have occurred due to a number of factors, most notably because of the club's contractual obligations with regards to players wages despite the fact that levels of income have dropped significantly. "While we have been back in the Football League, our average attendance has dropped from 2,260 in our first season three years ago to 1,415 for the season just gone. "Despite the falling attendances and general economic downturn, our request for dispensation from the Football League to postpone having to install an additional thousand seats was turned down requiring us to carry out over £60,000 of work on the ground. "We also took a significant hit with the collapse of our main sponsor Fraser Eagle midway through last season, with well over £100,000 owing to the club. "All this said, the club fully accepts the liability, we believe that it is morally right that the money should be paid and are not seeking to avoid paying the any part of the debt. "With the end of the current season we now have the opportunity to restructure the finances of the club, particularly in terms of revising our playing budget, and we are confident that working with our professional advisers we will find a solution to clear the outstanding balance in full. "Aside from the amount owing to HM Revenue and Customs our other liabilities come to less than a quarter of this figure, certainly not excessive for a company of our size with the majority incurred as general day to day operational costs."
  3. David Craig: "Don't expect a decision today" "Club are working on financial matters behind the managerial deal" "perhaps an announcement after the weekend"
  4. I imagine it's either: "talks are on-going blah blah blah" or "sorry lads, we just can't meet his demands"
  5. Alan Shearer is expected to discover today if he is to become the permanent manager of Newcastle United. Shearer spent several hours on Tuesday negotiating with Newcastle's owner, Mike Ashley, and it is understood Shearer and his assistants Iain Dowie and Paul Ferris presented Ashley with a convincing plan as to how they will cope with relegation from the Premier League and mount a promotion campaign. Ashley was not on Tyneside as talks continued on Wednesday and all parties were awaiting a response yesterday. There is some optimism locally that Ashley will agree to Shearer's vision. Shearer has said that he wishes to place a £15m transfer fee on centre-half Sébastien Bassong in the hope it deters suitors, or funds a new defence. Should Bassong stay then, with Steve Harper, Habib Beye and Steven Taylor pledging their commitment for next season, Shearer's Newcastle would have an experienced defensive base. Reports in Italy yesterday linked Obafemi Martins with a move to Fiorentina. A fee of £8m was mentioned.
  6. Off to see him again tonight, cannot wait !!!
  7. Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is working through Alan Shearer's list of demands and is hoping to clinch the deal which will secure him as manager this weekend. The billionaire sportswear magnate has told Shearer, his advisers and fans to be patient as he draws up a policy to take the relegated club forward under the former captain's command. Shearer wants guarantees over the running of the club Tough stance: Shearer wants guarantees over the running of the club Shearer has confirmed to Ashley that he is willing to take the job if he can have a £15million transfer budget and get guarantees over the running of the club as he looks to cut the £74mwage bill. He has told Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias the players he wants to keep and those he is willing to sacrifice at the right price. Central to his rebuilding plans are defenders Steven Taylor, Sebastien Bassong and Habib Beye but they could attract interest from sides still in the Barclays Premier League. Shearer has already put a £15m price tag on Bassong, a £500,000 signing from Metz last summer, who is looking to better his £5,000-a-week wages and has attracted interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton. Rivals Sunderland remain confident they will be naming Steve Bruce as their manager as they look to negotiate compensation with Wigan, who want about £3m. But a £500,000 bonus Bruce is said to be owed could further complicate the situation. Bruce has met Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn after he was given permission to talk to the club, who yesterday released Dwight Yorke, David Connolly, Darren Ward, Nick Colgan and Arnau Riera. Loan players Calum Davenport and Tal Ben Haim have also left while Michael Chopra will go to Cardiff in July.
