I like winter. I like it when the nights draw in, and I don't mind the cold.
I'm still a bit of a sucker for Christmas as well.
The only thing that is annoying about winter is when it snows, and the snow either goes shit and slushy, or it goes really icy, and you have to gingerly make your way over large areas of ice trying not slip over.
Apart from that, winter is great.
I think I get SAD. I get depressed from time to time in the summer. I don't mind a bit of sun and warmth, but I just find myself feeling down more often during the summer than during winter.
Erm, I think SAD only applies to winter, where the lack of natural sunlight can literally drive a person to depression.
Winter's shite it really is. The only good thing is the football, but even then you freeze your bollocks off watching it. January and February are the worst - Christams is gone and there's still months before it gets warm.

You point out that he has spent £50m, but most of that has been during this summer and he has yet been able to play all £50m worth in one team. If once he has for a few games, he's still not getting right, THEN you can criticise him for spending all that money without the desired return
Oh OK, interesting. So for instance, if Luque doesn't play for 3 months, we can't criticise him because he hasn't had a full strengh team. And then if Luque comes back but Owen is out, we can't criticise him.......
Face it, they're not going to get on the same team that often. I think it is perfectly fair to judge him now, if the squad is lacking this is at least partly his fault is it not? Also last winters signings - Boumsong, Babayaro, and Faye are also looking suspect.

Precisely SLP....
My over-riding point is that we didn't suddenly start becoming crap when Souness took over....it had started before then.
For me, the rot started when we lost to Partizan Belgrade on penalties. All throughout that season there was piss-poor performances along the way. The home match against Wolves springs immediately to mind - we can't, however much we want to, blame that on Souness....

Fantastic. So until he can play every player he has signed in the same team, which may of course never happen, he is beyond criticism.

I saw Carlos play in the flesh last year and he put in one of the worst performances I have ever seen at the top level (Real Madrid).
But you can't deny that free kick was possibly the best ever, and as I am sure he intended it, it was no fluke.
-
Shearer's first goal for us at SJP was nice as well.
I wonder why he stopped the curling free kicks? It's not like increasing age should affect him too much. Maybe he just likes hurting people.

I'm coming to the conclusion that none of our CBs are as good as we like to think. Boumsong's loss of form is alarming, Bramble will always make mistakes, and Taylor has the potential, but has yet to realise it.
Of course, they all look class compared to our two CBs. Basically our defence is in fact pretty shit.
-
The only time he's looked really solid is alongside Titus last season when Bramble was playing out of his skin. Call me demanding but for the money we've paid, I expect a centre half to be decent in the air, Boumsong never wins a header unless he's marking a dwarf, as he was yesterday.
He has to do better than he is, as currently Bramble and Taylor should eb the choice at CB but i suspect Souness won't have the balls/brains to do that and will shunt Taylor to RB if he wants to play all three.
Souness dig quota maintained.
He'll be having a dig at Souness for handing out free signed shirts to disabled kids next tbh.

I'm still in a bad mood since the charvers tbh.
But I enjoyed the goals immensely, they were all well taken. I'm just a bit worried about papering over cracks though, sorry, I can't help it. We need a sustained run for me to think differently. That's the difference.
Hey, I agree mate.
Good. Can we all be friends again, Gemmill included?
-
If you truly analyse Alex's arguments though you'll find that he can also rarely claim to be right either. Once you strip away the various clever caveats and conditions then you'll find that theres very little left of real substance tbh.
Very true.
Alex may in fact be an AI computer algorythm from what I can tell.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If you are talking about final league position, then I would say, considering the money he has spent, 4th place or higher must be achieved.
I'll be amazed if that happens like.
Substitute "amazed" for gutted.
Gemmill, to be honest all that deserve is a FUCK OFF.
I want the best for NUFC the same as everyone else, I just don't rate this manager like you do. You have now really, really pissed me off.
You running yet Gemmill??
Ha ha, hilarious. Yes I'm pissed off. I thought I could come on here and have a sensible discussion about NUFC, but instead get childish insults because Souness has managed to fluke one game. I thought Gemmill might be above that tbh.
I thought you might have been above throwing a hissy fit when someone makes a joke tbh. Looks like I was wrong Mr. Huffy Knickers.
In fairness, he's upset at the result.
The performance.
And yes, part of me thinks its damaging for us in the long-term, it's not rocket science.
So if we finished 4th surely you would then be gutted about what this was doing to us in the long term (ie. keeping Souness in a job)? So my joke turned out to be right then.......
No.
If we finish 4th, then I was wrong about Souness, and I can live with that, believe me. However, like Alex, I am rarely wrong.....

Christ, some of you people have good memories, how many of my ludicrous opinions are going to come back and bite me in the arse when I don't even remember saying them?
Acceptable? Top 6 and a cup (I subscribe to the propaganda!) but we need to be challenging for the 4th spot right to the end.
If Souness wins a cup (and I think he just might) he will become a legend by virtue of the fact that noone else has managed it in nearly 40 years. Acceptable for me would be a top 6 finish. The season after that, top 4.
No way will Souness be here next season, even if he did what you said. He's going to find it very hard to even win a cup - we're out of the UEFA cup already, which was our best chance. With Chelsea seemingly having the league sown up already, the other big clubs will take the domestic cups more seriously. We are not good enough to beat Arsenal, ManU, or Chelsea, and would struggle against half a dozen lesser teams.
So, last season he doesn't win anything and gives us our lowest league finish in the Premier League but he gets money to spend and doesn't get the sack off Shepherd. But, if he does win something this season and finishes top 6, he will get the sack next summer?
I think his successor has already been planned for Alex. Top six is worse than under Robson . I suppose things could change in the highly unlikely event of a cup win, but personally I doubt it. I think Shepherd must be able to see our coaching etc, etc, isn't up to scratch. Also, how long has he got on his contract> Has it been extended?
I assume you mean Robson's last full season in charge.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th are all better than or equal to that and all are 'top 6'.
OK Mr Pedantic. Either way, I think it is highly unlikely Souness will be here in June. Does anyone seriously think he will be?

Like I say, familiarity.
I had my studio in Hackney for a while, and it was certainly a bit shady, but I felt like I'd be ok.
You're right, there are areas of London that are very scary.
Maybe I feel that in Newcastle, everywhere is a bit intimidating?
It seems that the different cultures are too close together, so it's harder to avoid the trouble?
There are good areas though, where there is a more relaxed atmosphere. Sadly, these seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate - witness the demise of Jesmond.

It was a tongue in cheek comment but I'd be very surprised if London is any less violent than Newcastle and if the tube is any more safe than the Metro. I'm basing this on anecdotal evidence from people I know who live in London and when I've been on the tube late at night myself. I would also imagine mugging is more common in London. It's very difficult to compare two places that are so different in their layout and size though. Perhaps you just feel safer when you know the area well though.
Just my experience, though to be fair, in London, it's easier to avoid the bad areas as it's so much bigger. The tube though is a relatively safe place and there are a lot of staff.
Still, the point about brawling IS true. It seems much more likely in Newcastle than out and about in central London.
Well, you should have said Central London then shouldn't you
Ok, fair point!
BUT, if you include the outskirts of Newcastle, I think the picture gets even worse...
Maybe it's familiarity but feck, there are places in Newcastle that make me want my mummy.
I think that Kaiser Chiefs song sums it up perfectly - Saturday night.
To be honest, I hate to agree with AF, but I think he's got a point. Newcastle is going right down hill, it's focusing on drink far too much. The result? Pissed up hen parties, charvers, psychos and lunatics. I like a drink as much as the next man, but it has got way out of control and I don't blame people being frightened about it.
As for the metro compared to the underground, it is far, far worse. I'm not just talking about my Friday night experience, I have witnessed violence on it on dozens of occasions, it's a nightmare. I challenge anyone to get the metro to the coast on a saturday night completley sober and not shit themselves.
So, I think it is a sad but fair comment to say Newcastle is one of the most violent cities in the UK, and is sadly going downhill. Something really needs to be done about it.

So Shepherd's son is a mackem, then?
Seriously, you have to feel sorry for the poor sod. It can't be easy looking like that.
