so what do you reckon. re-sign him and go back to 442? i reckon he'd work well with cisse as a front two pair but arguably the rest of the team would be weakened because you'd have to lose a central midfielder. cabaye looked much better when he had tiote and jonas in the middle alongside him in a 433 then when it was just him and tiote in A 442. he could support the front three a bit more. ben arfa looked better in that system too. could you move carroll to the central striker position and move cisse out wide after he did so well in the middle of the front 3 last season? i don't know. like you said though, it's unlikely to come off.

5 of the 11 goals in this video from the half season before he was sold to liverpool came from barton deliveries - either corners, set pieces, or but in from wide and deep areas - i was wrong in that they weren't all from wide right but they were from the type of delivery you don't see ben arfa putting in too often. i agree with what you're saying. i'd like to see him back too. i still think he's a good player when used correctly. but there's definitely been a big change in our style of play since he was sold and it's got us better results than when carroll was here. i think he might struggle in our current system as he has at liverpool, particularly if we stick with 4-3-3. i don't know. could be a nice problem to have and he's definitely a good option coming off the bench. not sure he'd be up for swapping liverpool's bench for ours, or that the deal is realistic. massively taking the piss out of liverpool if it does happen. which is always nice.

i agree there's more to his game than that. he has got a good touch and canny shot on him from outside the box. but you've got to play to his strengths. he feeds off good deliveries from wide or deep areas - a lot of the assists for his goals were set pieces or when the ball was whipped in by barton. look at that goal against sweden from gerrard's ball - he's unplayable when he gets that kind of service but i'm not sure we've got that kind of player in the side anymore, or that we should revert to that kind of game after the style of play we adopted last season saw us finishing 5th.

carroll and cisse would work well together up front in a 4-4-2 but we've not really got the wingers anymore to play to the big man's strengths. he was class for us feeding off those early balls barton used to ping in from out wide. ben arfa is more likely to go on a mazy run and slip a ball through on the ground than look to get the ball in the mixer early for the big fella. not saying he isn't still a good player, or that he wouldn't be a useful player to have back in the squad but when he was here last time, he was the focal point of the whole team and the way we played was set up to get the best out of him. he might struggle for goals if he came back the same way he has at liverpool unless we changed the way we play again. and our new style of play and new players acquired since he left have proved more effective.

I'd be happy to have Carroll back - great plan B option to have off the bench but I doubt he'd come back unless he thought he'd start games. And we're not really set up to play to his strengths anymore.
