  1. how the fuck has the match thread turned into an argument about embroidery. We looked good today because Posh stood off us and gave us plenty of space in the first half. That flattered us, given that we've recently been exposed by mobile teams pressing us with a bit of pace. Things came off for Jonas today, and he seemed quite emotional after the goal. It was good to see every toon outfield player run up to join in the celebration. We threatened less when he went off. Harewood tried a lot more today, but there was at least one occasion when he gave up on a ball then changed his mind and managed to get it, but by then in a less dangerous position. Ranger continues to show a decent touch but I've still not seen any strikers instinct. Carroll took his header well, and Simpson's looping chip was class - Nolan nearly pulled off a similar effort later on. Peterborough came back in the second half, but that was probably due to our laziness. Harper pulled off 3 good saves before conceding the goal - his confidence is up and he looks a better shot stopper than earleir in the season. I saw a couple of anti FCB bedsheets during the gane - one in the E Stand corner and another in the Gallowgate. Once the very long "rapist" banner was deployed (the wording of which was a tad OTT IMO - and I hate the fucker) after the game had finished and most fans had left, a bunch of stewards decided to intervene resulting in a comical bit of tug-of-war with the fans and stewards. From my spot in the East stand it looked like at least one steward ended up sprawled over the seats and I wouldn't be surprised if punches were exchanged.
  2. Newcastle United supporters step up campaign to oust Mike Ashley Thursday, 05 November 2009 By Ben Smith - The Times "Newcastle United supporters have stepped up their fight to oust Mike Ashley in the wake of his decision to rename St James’ Park, their ground for the past 117 years. Supporters reacted with horror and disgust to yesterday's announcement that the historic ground has been rebranded sportsdirect.com@St James’ Park. The move comes as Newcastle attempt to recoup some of the £50 million that Derek Llambias, the managing director, claimed has been lost in revenue after their relegation to the Coca-Cola Championship. The Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) is calling on fans to take back control of their club by getting behind the "Yes We Can Campaign", which will be officially launched next week. The fresh push has come after Ashley took the club off the market last week, ending Barry Moat’s bid to buy him out and return Alan Shearer to the dugout. The plan is along similar lines to the model that is in place at Barcelona and Real Madrid. "There doesn't seem to be any knight in shining armour on the horizon so we have launched our own campaign which is calling upon the supporters to come together with a view to buying Ashley out," Colin Whittle, a NUST spokesman, said. "We have had meetings with financial institutions, brokers, MPs and a lot of other individuals in order to come up with a structure that will ultimately lead to the fans buying Ashley out. "We would be looking for a one member, one vote option, because we want to have supporter ownership at the core of the club. It is up to us to do it ourselves. Everyone is rising up and we are looking to bring forward the trust's long-term aim, of having an interest in the club, into a short-term one." It is understood meetings have been arranged with local finance brokers to discuss the proposals, with supporters being asked to contribute around £2,500 for a share, although all options are being explored. Petitions have been set up - NUST has collected more than 16,000 names - and demonstrations are planned for Saturday’s game against Peterborough United. Yesterday, Llambias admitted the club “could have worded” their statement better. He added, somewhat controversially, that Ashley’s running of the club had been “nearly spot on”." 50,000 members = £120,000,000 - Which might be enough to do the trick and leave a bit of working capital. £2,500 is a lot of money, but tempting if we definitely got shot of the FCB as a result.
  3. I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist but given the fans furore to date over proposed naming rights I really do believe that Llambias' latest "FCBschavtasticclobber@SJP" clarification is both a deliberate attempt to further wind-up the fans and might also turn out to be what ultimately happens when no other firms express an interest.
  4. The prospect of Wise still picking up a wage from NUFC boils my piss
  5. My poor wording, yes it was Zurab who got the red, tho others weighed in just as much. Butt tried but was ultimately a poor imitation of Smith, no insult intended, but he's less mobile and best deployed as as a sub. My eyes say we don't deserve to go up but, while I'm no acccadacca, this league is obviously mostly shite and provided the players stay fit and motivated we should make the top two.
  6. the first half was awful, Donny just passed the ball around our static midfield and deserved the lead. Raylor and Guthrie were largely invisible. But in the second half they sat back and flattered us by letting us try and play - which we didn't do very well until Carroll's impressive instinctive first time shot. Harewood put in a half-arsed shift and couldn't be bothered to chase after balls. We looked more threatening when Ranger came on. The Zurab incident invoved a load of handbags with uninvolved players piling in. Butt was playing peacemaker but did it pretty aggressively. His red card leaves us with fewer defensive options for the Sheff U game -not sure if his ban will be one or more games. Kadar looked decent on the ball and made some timely interventions, but also made a few dodgy decisions - he tended to try and play the ball out of defence, sometimes conceding posession in dangerous areas. Credit to Nolan for scoring an unlikely, and barely deserved, winner. A few decent chants of "get out of our club"
  7. We didn't wake up until the half-hour mark. Guthrie and Enrique had shockers. When Jonas came on there was no real understanding between him & Enrique, but at least they kept trying. While Ranger has shown some decent lay offs and held the ball up I'm pretty sure he's not yet had a proper shot at goal in all the games he's played. I'd start with Harewood as soon as he's fit enough. I think we could easily have lost tonight and QPR played round us at will. It would have been nice to be 5 points ahead but this result should keep the players on their toes for Saturday.
  8. Just got back and watching second half again on $ky. Ranger had a decent debut, but imo we can't rely on him to be a goal machine. He kept working, showed some nice lay offs and was looking to retain position, but wasn't selfish enough in front of goal. Generally our passing was more effective than of late and we were able to find space. Leicester tried to close us down but when it clicked we were just a little quicker than them to the ball. It was a decent all round team performance, with Simpson looking more reliable than Sideshow Fab. The big problem for me was we'd get to the edge of the box and then not know what to do with it. Guthrie's goal was one piece of class, but most of all I agree with Stevie that we are papering over the cracks and this gives Ashley confidence that his asset stripping business model can continue. Bastard!
  9. Sounds to me like a Huddersfield WUM is putting out rumours ahead of tomorrow's game.
  10. Seriously? people actually fell for that? Just realised! D'oh
  11. Seriously? people actually fell for that? Only saying that because I can't see us getting any other strikers in and think he's the least worst option in the squad. He was a prospect who became an enigma with a dodgy hip, but in our current mess think his experience and (occasional) silky skills could reap more rewards in this league than the more agricultural and ordinary Carroll. Though Ranger etc should be given a chance (starting with the Carling Cup?) and will hopefully score a few in the league we can't rely on the kids to get the points every week.
  12. STaylor was doing the long goodbye, on the pitch applauding all four corners after everyone else was down the tunnel. He milked it far more than usual. It was similar to Beye's long goodbye at the end of last season. The news on .com about Sol being in the ground and talking about signing imo supports the rumours that STaylor will be off. Can't believe I'm saying this but after todays performance I think we'd be far better off keeping Stroller than flogging him to Benfica. I was surprised at how the anti Ashley chants didn't take off, even at 0.0. But the best thing about today was just being able to cheer the team and leave the ground happy. ASHLEY OUT!
  13. [edit] The Fish beat me to it aye, I'm recording that one. Looking forward to watchng it.
  14. I thought Guthrie was our most creative midfielder tonight despite Nolan's assists. But he looked completely fucked after 70 mins. Committed, but not fit. Owen just doesn't look right. I used to think he was protecting himself for a summer transfer but from the lopsided manner he was running tonight and the way he failed to get back onside I now think he's carrying something. Why has Viduka been out so long. He was massive today - and not just in a porcine way. Imo Beye is still getting fit after his long layoff and not past it. He and Guthrie worked well together on the right. Guti did nowt. Duff did ok. Butt and Nolan were destructively effective. But sooooo pedestrian. Martins is not a footballer and was falling over when he hit the ball. Thank fuck he scored. Our defence/midfield keeps threatening to self-destruct. But Staylor's contributions in the opposition box were welcome. Lovenkrands finished well but did little else. I used to rate Harper only marginally behind Shay but that hasn't been the case this year. He made a couple of good instinctive saves tonight but his communication with defenders was poor, as was his decision making on several occasions, The atmosphere tonight was excellent - even in the East Stand Library. I can't remember the last time before tonight that I left SJP with hope in the players. But they'll have to do even better on Saturday to beat a Fulham team who seem to be playing for fun at the minute.
  15. it was definitely Ryan, saw it from the east stand, near where it happened. Just replayed it off motd too. You can also tell because he is wearing a long sleeve layer under a short sleeve shirt. Staylor had bare arms
  16. Doomed. The more I see the more I worry that relegation looms. I fear that some of the usual relegation fodder will be collectively up for the forthcoming fight more than our badly misfiring bunch. Our form has gone down the shitter. Our manager is an idiot gobshite idiot whose grandstanding before the game on Sunday was butt-clenching in its cringefulness. And the top of the shop seemingly couldn't give a fuck. What a mess. I'm off to the Irish Centre tomorrow night to see if we keep apathy and squabbling at bay and start to form a Critical Mass. And drink beer.
  17. +1. Needs some sort of apology to fans too.
  18. Long time lurker, first time poster. I voted yes I was conned by the Ashley vision and blew all our savings on 3 year season tickets paid up-front for me and wor lass. I'm happy to commit to the team for that period, but the fact that the money has ultimately gone to Ashley rather than on new players just boils my piss soooo much. I want NUSC to succeed because we need a mouthpiece for the majority of sensible fans - and me. Handing out leaflets before the Blackburn game I was surprised by how most of the faithful were 40+. I've been disappointed by recent NUSC statements - it smacks of grandstanding for the sake of it. That guy who played a straight bat on the first radio interview did an able job. Someone's ears want boxing for the last press release and the sensible brigade need to assert control and start building credibility through (post election) low profile nuts and bolts work advocating our collective cause and representing fans interests. AND tho I want Ashley to go NOW, the global crisis makes an offer unlikely, so NUSC needs to give proper thought to it's stance on Ashley hanging around into the medium term. They've already got my tenner. Compared to the money that I invest in NUFC, or even the Mag, in this or any other year it' a small price to pay. I am hopeful that what we've got is at the minute is ill focussed exuberance. Imo the Club has not even learnt to crawl and is still making unco-ordinated gurgling noises. I dread to think what it'll be like when it hits adolescence!
