Newcastle defender Craig Moore has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury. Moore has been on the sidelines since the middle of November and Newcastle's resources have been stretched to the limit in his absence, but Glenn Roeder is unsure when he will be back in action. And with Titus Bramble, Olivier Bernard, Celestine Babayaro and Stephen Carr also injured Roeder knows it will be some time before he gets a recognisable back four together again. "To be perfectly honest I cannot put a comeback date on Moore, Bramble, Bernard or Carr," Roeder told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "Moore has broken down and this is probably due to all the previous hamstring injuries he has suffered in his career. "Babayaro has had a scan on his hamstring injury and it revealed that there is a grade one tear which will keep him out for two or three weeks. "Bramble is only back in very light training - and I mean very light - and we don't really know when he will be back. The same applies to Bernard, who is having an operation on his hip. "And as far as Carr is concerned, he is keeping physically fit, but there is still bruising on his foot and he cannot strike a ball. His return is open-ended - it could be tomorrow or weeks." Nolberto Solano could return to the side against Everton on Saturday but Roeder also has injury worries in other positions, with Damien Duff struggling to recover from knee surgery. "Duff has done some extra work over Christmas after his knee operation and as a result his calf tightened up, and it seems that no matter what we do we cannot win," sighed Roeder. Shay Given is hoping to be fit to play against Everton despite being substituted towards the end of the victory over Tottenham last Saturday, but Roeder is ready to rely on Pavel Srnicek again if he has to. "Shay is hoping to be back against Everton and we have not discounted this, although perhaps he will have a better chance of making the Manchester United game (on Monday). "But regardless of when Shay does come back, I have to say that we have complete confidence in Pavel Srnicek." Scott Parker is one player to have returned from injury in recent weeks and he has helped Newcastle to find some form, but he wants his side to maintain their momentum over the New Year period. "When you play in such a good league like the Premiership it always takes time to get to where you'd like to be after injury," he explained. "I felt good out there in recent games, though. I feel strong - I am getting to where I want to be fitness wise. "We have had a lot of injuries but it hasn't affected us on the field. "I think that shows what we are capable of and what we can achieve if we stay ahead of the game."

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has made approaches for two players ahead of the January transfer window. And while he waits to see if his moves for the duo - believed to be a left-back and a striker - are success- ful, Roeder is considering also turning to loan deals in a bid to cover the remaining gaps in his squad. "We've got a couple of permanent signings on the horizon," Roeder told the Sunday Sun. "We haven't got any feedback yet from those involved, but we're hopeful." But as well as those two planned cash buys, Roeder admitted he may use the loan market again - despite Giuseppe Rossi's struggle to make an impact during his temporary spell at St James's Park. The latest striker to be linked in Europe with a move to Tyneside is Spartak Moscow's Argentine star Fernando Cavenaghi.

Newcastle have recalled Tim Krul from his Christmas break in Holland after Shay Given aggravated a groin problem against Tottenham on Saturday. Given, who has returned in fine form following an operation to rectify a perforated bowel, limped out of the win over Spurs in the dying moments. He was replaced by the man he succeeded on Tyneside some nine years ago, Pavel Srnicek, with the veteran Czech receiving a hero's welcome at St James' Park. Given is a severe doubt for the Boxing Day visit to Bolton, with the developments forcing Roeder to put an emergency call in to Holland. Krul is feeling his way back to fitness following a knee operation, but he could well be asked to spend Boxing Day on the bench at The Reebok. "We have managed to keep it quiet for a few weeks that Shay has had a slight groin problem," said Roeder. "It is unbelievable that he could go five seasons without any problems whatsoever and suddenly at Upton Park earlier in the season, he had an injury that is never seen on a football field, it is only ever seen in car crashes. "We got him back from that, and now he has picked up a groin injury that does not rule him out of the game on Boxing Day yet. "We will be recalling Tim Krul. He was on a flight to Amsterdam at 4pm this afternoon, and he will probably now only get a chance to have breakfast with his parents tomorrow before getting on a plane back to Newcastle."

BOOZY Manchester United players shocked locals when they launched into a chant calling for Scousers to be BURNED during a Christmas party in a city centre pub. The multi-millionaire stars, including LIVEPOOL-BORN Wayne Rooney, were caught on camera by a News of the World reader as they stunned punters at the Old Grapes in Manchester. A group of first-team regulars led by club captain Gary Neville piled into the popular boozer at around 5pm last Monday. As the beer flowed the footballers, including Wes Brown, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Alan Smith launched into a series of familiar chants from the terraces at nearby Old Trafford. But regulars cringed when players belted out the anti-Liverpool rant Build A Bonfire—as Wayne Rooney sat with an embarrassed grin, at the heart of the stars. Our man on the scene told us: "It was so loud you could hear it outside. If there had been a group of Scousers in the pub it could have turned nasty." At one point during the singalong Gary Neville, who once admitted he was "brought up to HATE Scousers", starts a chant about striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while waving his fingers at Rooney. And the players, some of them England regulars, even sang about how winker Ronaldo made our national side look "s***" at last summer's World Cup. A Man United spokesman defended the players' actions. He said "The lads were on a night off and it was nothing more than high spirits." http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/united.shtml

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed an interest in Championship duo Giles Barnes and Gareth Bale. Southampton defender Bale has been strongly linked with a host of Premiership clubs after impressive performances for club and country this season. Tottenham and Manchester United are both thought to be keen, but Roeder has gone one step further by confirming an interest. Barnes is also a target of Roeder's, with the Magpies boss full of praise for the Derby midfielder, who has scored five goals already this season. Roeder sees bright futures for both teenagers and is keen to bring the pair to St James' Park when the transfer window reopens next month. "The only two players I am interested in from the Championship are Giles Barnes and Gareth Bale," Roeder said. "They are two outstanding talents and the sort of players we should be looking at - and by admitting our interest, we're are not giving away any secrets because a lot of top clubs fancy them. "Barnes is an offensive midfield player and someone I would call a truly fine modern-day footballer, while it would not surprise me if Gareth Bale went on to play 100 games for Wales."

Newcastle United are ready to offer Shaun Wright-Phillips an escape route from Chelsea. Their manager, Glenn Roeder, has indicated his desire to take the England midfielder on loan for the rest of the season when the transfer window opens next month. Wright-Phillips is largely surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and has made just 13 Premiership starts for the champions since his £21m move from Manchester City 18 months ago. Roeder, who faces competition from his City counterpart, Stuart Pearce, for the 25-year-old, said: "If Shaun is available for loan then we'd have to be interested. "Why he's been unable to force his way into the team at Chelsea I don't know. I wouldn't even try to reason why that's not happened, you'd have to ask Jose Mourinho," he added. Roeder has a long-held admiration for Wright-Phillips, whose arrival would add further congestion to an already well-stocked area of the Newcastle squad. He continued: "He's a highly talented player and without doubt he was Manchester City's best player when he was there. I think he's a huge talent. There's no reason for our fans to panic, we've got targets and we'll be dealing with those over the next 10 days and in the early part of January." It has long been a criticism of Newcastle United's colourful chairman, Freddy Shepherd, that his judgement is all too often clouded by an irrational passion for his home-town football club. Yet, at a time when his own future is far from secure with talk of a takeover sparking heated debate within the pubs of Tyneside, Shepherd is not about to perform the volte-face necessary to persuade the doubters he is suitably distant from grass-roots emotion. "I'm Fred the fan first, chairman second," said a bullish Shepherd as he prepared for this afternoon's visit of Tottenham Hotspur and, in the shape of the London club's chairman Daniel Levy, a business-like board member far removed from Newcastle's brash figurehead. "I first started watching Newcastle as a kid on the Gallowgate End and I'll continue watching until the day I die. "It's my club - and I mean that not as a chairman - but in the way every fan says it's his club. A lot of chairmen are passing through clubs but let me make one thing crystal clear. That's not me. I could never do what Ken Bates or Peter Ridsdale did and join another club's board if I ever left Newcastle. No chance whatsoever. It's in my blood. You can get rid of the wife or the bank manager, but a Geordie can never get rid of Newcastle." Maybe so. However, immediately after Newcastle's tame home defeat against Sheffield United at the beginning of November, the question on the lips of a sizeable minority of disaffected Magpies' supporters was just how to get rid of Shepherd. An impressive run of just two defeats - both against the Premiership champions, Chelsea, in the space of a week - in 11 games since that watershed display against the Blades has proved sufficiently encouraging to silence the agitators. Shepherd is now painting a typically optimistic picture of unity and stability as he prepares to support Roeder with the funds to strengthen a Newcastle squad undermined by injuries throughout a troubled 2006. "Considering the injuries we've had, Glenn has done a fantastic job," he added. "In fact, I doubt even Sir Alex Ferguson could have done a better one in the circumstances. You can only go to war with what you've got."

I finished yesterday so I think it'll just be loafing about the house today. Was meant to be meeting a friend for dinner and drinks later but though heading up to Glasgow the Friday before Christmas would be a nightmare so postponed it until after the New Year.

Willie McKay has revealed that he is one of the eight leading agents that has refused to fully co-operate with Lord Stevens's investigation into football's finances. Stevens announced the findings of his Quest team on Wednesday and he confirmed that he was not fully satisfied with 17 of the 362 transfer deals he and his team had looked at. Within that Stevens also confirmed that eight agents had not helped his inquiry - and McKay admits he is one of those. "I did not answer the questions on the questionnaire because as far as I am concerned the Football Association already had the information," McKay told the Daily Mirror. "I filled out all of the appropriate forms on all the deals at the time and there has never been any query about this. I have nothing to hide. "I was very unhappy that my name was constantly appearing in newspaper articles that seem to have been leaked from the Quest team. "It is no way to carry out a so-called investigation."
