KIERON DYER last night surveyed the wreckage of the last two years of his career and declared: "It has been an embarrassment."

Dyer has faced a litany of hamstring and back injuries that have strangled the life out of his career at St James' Park.

The 27-year-old flying winger missed out on the World Cup in the summer and managed just four Premiership starts last season.

Dyer is finally ready to bury the heartache of false dawns and repeated breakdowns after being sent into solitary confinement for six months in London with top physio John Green, the man he claims has saved his career.

And the club's coaching staff are now insistent that the player has gained a yard of pace.

Dyer, who scored the Toon goal in yesterday's creditable draw at Arsenal, said: "I have felt embarrassed. It's hard being in Newcastle with fans asking, 'When are you back, when are you back?' You feel embarrassed, it's just embarrassment.

"You get paid a lot of money and you haven't played football for two years. It's embarrassing.

"Then you've got the lads as well asking: 'Are you training this week? When will you play?' You feel like you have to lie to them because you just feel like you are letting everyone down.

'So when I had the opportunity to go down South, stay down there and keep out of it, it was awelcome break not to have the questions.

"It's just been so frustrating because you go to all the top specialists in the world, take their advice, do everything they say, come back and then it's still not right.

"There was talk about my medication, about my back, I had an injection for that. Stuff like that is frustrating because there never seemed to be an end to the problem."

Dyer had travelled all round the world to try and cure the hamstring strains that have continually interrupted his career. He even spent time with the British Medical Association.

During Graeme Souness' reign he came back, starred as a substitute against West Brom, and then could not even bring himself to tell the then-Newcastle manager that his hamstring had gone again in the next training session. He ended in tears.

"After coming on in the West Brom game, I felt really sharp,'' he added. "I woke up the next day and the first thing I do every morning is feel my legs, and they felt fine.

Then in training we had a little five-aside on the Monday, I went to do a sprint and just felt my hamstring again.

"I was gutted. It was embarrassing having had the hamstring trouble for so long. I carried on training to try and get through it, just thinking: "It's going to go away, it's going to go away.' Then you've got the manager in your ear, saying 'Come on, you've got to get sharp, you've got to get match fit.' So I lied to him, I was that embarrassed.

"He said: 'Is everything fine?' I said: 'Yeah.' Then when I came back into the changing room to speak to Derek Wright, our physio, he knew straight away. That was probably the lowest point.''

Eventually it was current Toon boss Glenn Roeder who sent Dyer to see former West Ham medic Green.

Recommendations also came from Rio Ferdinand and David James, and Dyer is now ready to pick up his career and start repaying the new, £85,000-a-week contract he signed at the start of last season.

"He came to the conclusion that my body was in quite a mess, probably from doing certain exercises in the wrong position and running in the wrong position,'' said Dyer.

"He worked on everything from my head down to my feet. We started from scratch. His motto was, 'You're taking a sledgehammer and smashing a Tic Tac with it'. He made everything in my body stronger, he has got me running the right way.

"I certainly feel great and hopefully now I can just start playing football.

"It must be like Newcastle having a new signing back."

I know it's not a popular thing to say but I do feel sorry for Dyer. Ofcourse, the £85k a week must soften the blow considerably but when he's fully fit he's a class act. He practically carried us in the UEFA Cup under Souness until his hamstring went.

Just checked the BBC website which lists the following on the paper round up.

Newcastle are interested in Ivory Coast midfielder Steve Gohouri, but face competition from Wigan and Rangers for the Young Boys Berne player. (NOTW)

The Magpies will offer Aston Villa James Milner in an effort to lure midfielder Steven Davis. (NOTW)

And Newcastle are lining up a £500,000 swoop for unsettled Celtic midfielder Shaun Maloney, after the player halted contract talks. (Sunday Mail)

I know it is mere tabloid rumour, but even so 3 midfielder's is bloody stupid when everyone knows that we should be looking at 3 Defenders and another striker, and what worries me is that there is no smoke without fire.

Why are we so desperate to flog Milner?

He's the best young player we have, and Davis is a player we don't need.

;)

To be honest, I'd jump at a deal to swap Milner for Davis, but I don't believe Villa would be interested.

Milner is and always will be shite. Zog isnt anywhere near the player he is hyped to be but is significantly better than the other young uns. Taylor is marginally better than Kevin Scott but will never reach Steve Howey level.
