Players In Jan?

With our current squad imo we only really need a LB and a 'big man' striker to get us through to the summer. Luque and Bramble to be off loaded with any luck. Car and Baba may not be too happy not playing so maybe get rid of them and get some up and coming fullbacks in if we don't have any already in the reserves. Criminal not to carry on playing Nobby, Taylor and Ramage as first choice at the back, hunty's looking promising but still not 100% sure yet so a very good LB with a bit of height is what we need the most.

LB has to be the priority. Id also not play Emre on the left where I tihnk he is ineffective compared to the centre. We need a new CB as while Taylor and Ramage have been "ok", we know Moore is on his way and Bramble can be good / awful. Who knows if he is to get a new contract. Maybe we're seeing if we bring in a replacement. After that, surely a new RB is needed. Carr is average at best and while Nobby has been doing his best, its not an ideal situation.

Midfield I reckon is fine. Even with the injuries we have, we can still field a decent midfield. Dyer / Milner / Duff / Zog for the wings with Emtre, Parker or Butt in the centre.

Up front, we then just need someone to play with Martins. This said, I realise we cant just go out and spend big and bring all of these in, so it may mean using Dyer up front with Martins and of course Sib.

So, defence is the priority for me, starting at LB.

Oh, and get rid of Luque

Dont think Crouch is much of an improvement over Shola tbh (mock me if you will!)

Defender are priority imo. 2 fullbacks would be my priority.

Agree with that, Crouch = Shola.

Make it two fullbacks and a "big man" striker in January (eg. Viduka (short term) or Ashton (long term)) and we've got a deal

After the Sheff Utd game, I was absolutely petrified about our prospects of scoring goals; I reckoned we needed a big lad who could score goals and put himself about. Thankfully, we seem to have allayed my fears, somewhat, to the extent that we can be a bit more selective in who we bring in to play up front.

I still reckon we need a powerful striker though, but one with a few more years left in him than someone as a panic measure, quick-fix solution I was advocating then.

However, we might have a slight problem bringing in someone with a bit of quality. Any striker is going to wonder what the team formation will be at the start of next season, not just now. He will see Owen, Martins and himself as three first choice strikers to fill two places (Ameobi will be fourth choice, I have no doubts). Will he be up for the challenge, or just scared off a bit? Time will tell.

btw, how powerful is this Klose chap? I've only seen a bit of tv footage from the W.C. so don't know a lot about him, though he looks really good in the clips I've seen.

Oh, and a L.B please.

Luque (£2m), Bramble (£1m) and maybe Emre (£7.5m) will be out in Jan imo.

Agreed. I'm fairly happy with what we've got at centreback with Taylor, Ramage and Hunty. We've pissed enough money up the wall over the years on expensive centre halves who haven't improved the defence (Woodgate being the obvious exception). I'd stick with the lercal lads 'til the end of the season and review it from there.

Fullback is a different matter as neither Baba or Carr look sufficiently interested and need to be shifted out of the side immediately. A pair of decent fullbacks would not only give us a upgrade in their own positions but also ease the burden on the young central defenders.

I'd also like to see more numbers upfront, Nugent plus someone with a bit of 'presence', one of Ashton (ideally), Bent or Beattie would do me.

I wouldn't be that bothered if emre went and we got good money for him, we can live without him imo. LB is priority and cover for solano at RB as Carr is the worst RB in the league

We need three very good specialist CM's so i'd be gutted if we sold Emre, as he's different to Butt and Parker. Dyer plays well up front or RW but i'm far from convinced as a central midfielder.

Fullback has definitely become the key position, despite Nobby doing well at right back.

A left back is a must in January, and ideally a RB as well as getting in another striker.

I hope from what Roeder has said that as well as looking to buy players they are going to look into loan deals to strengthen the squad a bit as with out propensity for injuries we need numbers!

No striker of any merit will sign for us knowing that he will be 3rd or possibly even 4th choice when everyone else is fit tbh.

Peter Crouch even entertaining coming here will be knocked on the head. Why leave being 3rd or 4th choice at a team that has regular Champions Leage football to be 3rd or 4th choice and mid-table strugglers?

A striker of any merit wouldn't think like you though. He would back himself to be first choice irrespective of who's already here. He'd definitely see hismelf first choice alongside Martins with no Owen, and when Owen returns way down the line he may still be fucked or this new striker has outdone Martins and still retains his place.

Also we pay shitloads of money for people to be 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice!

It would be ideal to have a young, promising strker coming through as 4th choice now. Shame as he would defintetly be getting some experience.

Come to think of it our current situation is similar to the time Ossie blooded a few youngsters.

Clark, Elliott, Watson, Neilson, Appelby, Howey (maybe Smith) etc etc.

Didn't do us OR them any harm.

Altogether different standard of player in Ossies youth team:

Watson, Clark, Howey, Thompson all made the England squad in their careers and many felt that a young Robbie Elliott should have barring injury. Not sure the same will happen with our current incumbents. Howey was a country mile better than Taylor at a similar age for instance.

I agree with some of that but my point was it is good that these lads are getting a game as it may save us a fortune in the future,

P.S. Watson ddnt make an England squad, did he? All played U-21s though
