As I said, which Fop has probably ignored as it doesn't fit his arguement, Sven's luck with major injuries to key players at tournements was appalling.

I see the tabloids have you firmly in their grasp. "Rooney scores a goal - with Rooney we will win the XXXX" to "Rooney doubtful - no chance of winning anything at all ever". ;)

Sven's seeming inability to formulate a team not including the patently obvious choices was pretty appalling, especially compared to what other England managers have had to do in similar situations.

How come his record compares so favourably with other England managers then?

I'd say because he's had the strongest overall England squad of any modern England manager, before or I think since.

Although also probably because he didn't get himself sack for his indiscretions.

Stronger than McClaren had? How does that work then?

Still no examples of this 'luck' I note.

Like a said there's plenty of little rubs of the green (you even give one yourself).

Yes, I've also given examples of him being unlucky too, for balance. If there are plenty, give some more then.

I know when you try to drag the issue down into tit for tat pedantism I've won the argument.

Rubs of the green where he's won a match he might have lost or drawn (and that being a bad result) are plentiful enough, however rubs of the green (for other managers) where he's unjustly lost are not.

Even accounting for the curse of england penalties. ;)

How is asking you to back up what you said 'tit for tat pedantism'? I don't even think you think you've 'won' this one in all honesty. I think calling Sven lucky is very harsh and that's the reason I asked for some examples. Fair enough, no? You're being unable to provide any and generally avoiding the question speaks volumes.

Eriksson to be sacked by Man City

By Simon Austin

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told he will be sacked as Manchester City manager at the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra told Eriksson he was "not the right man for the job" at a meeting on Sunday, a source close to the manager said.

Eriksson informed the players at training on Monday that he would be dismissed, provoking an angry response.

The Swede, who has two years left on his contract, says he will not resign.

Shinawatra has been unhappy with City's results since the turn of the year.

The Thai billionaire was at the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday to watch his team throw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 against Fulham.

Afterwards, he held a meeting with Eriksson and told him he would be dismissed after their final two games of the season.

"Sven reacted calmly, as usual, but he was very surprised and disappointed," the source told BBC Sport.

"He doesn't want to leave the club and will not resign. He loves working with the players and his work at Manchester City has only just begun."

The club is refusing to comment on Eriksson's future.

Eriksson took over as City manager five weeks before the start of the season and the team occupied third spot in the Premiership in November.

However, their form has faltered badly since Christmas and they now lie ninth, having won just four of their last 15 games.

"The team has not been playing as well as it should have or getting the right results since Christmas," said the source.

"But overall it has been a good season. Thaksin agreed a five-year plan with Sven in the summer and the target for the first year was to finish in the top 10."

Shinawatra bankrolled eight summer signings at a cost of more than £46m shortly after buying the club, but BBC Sport understands he has had no direct contact with Eriksson in the second half of the season.

"They met several times personally at the start of the season and then nothing," said the source.

"Sven has had a list of players he wants to sign next summer for several weeks, but he hasn't been able to get the go-ahead to get them.

"He talks to (City chief executive) Alistair Macintosh, but things break down when he then goes to the chairman."

The City players are understood to have reacted with a mixture of shock and anger when Eriksson told them he would be leaving.

Last week, City defender Micah Richards said in his BBC Sport website column that the players were "100% behind" Eriksson.

"I think it is crazy that his job is even being talked about as being in danger - he has been good for everyone at City," said Richards.

Shinawatra will now set about the task of landing a new manager, with former Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari already touted as a replacement for Eriksson.

It seems certain that any new manager will have a considerable amount of money to spend in the summer.

Shinawatra has hundreds of millions of pounds worth of assets in Thailand frozen as he awaits trial on corruption charges later this year.

Yet his former lawyer, Noppadom Pattama, who is now Thailand's foreign minister, told BBC Sport that he expected these assets to be "unfrozen in the near future".

In the context of the overall squad I think so, but even in some individual players, Beckham is not what he was even in the context of the WC, although his need to be seen breaking with the past compounded that.

Although McClaren had the double handicap of not being particularly great and without much luck either.

Because you always do when you are.

You find a point deliberately off the track, and try to get it bogged down there in a circular slugging match that can't be won.

It's a good tactic, just I've seen it far too often to fall for it. ;)

Anyone else think that Foreign owners and sending football down the shitter?

It's just like bridge on the River Kwai....and Sven's refusing to comit Hari Kari following his failure.

They are certainly going to sell some newspapers, especially if the level of expectation is this insanely high.

Plus he'll get more £££'s for not doing so.

Top Ten for Man City is all they could have hope for IMO.

You said he was lucky. I said I disagreed and asked you why you thought he was lucky. You basically said 'he just is'. I asked you to cite some examples. You said there are plenty yet provided none. How is that me going off track exactly?

Despite how you try to portray it, I wasn't being petty and wanting to 'win' or whatever. I'd perhaps be prepared to accept your argument he is lucky but whenever I ask why you just dodge the question.

You're still trying it now. ;)

Like I said (and you agreed) rub of the green goes for him, as opposed to rub of the green going against him in results.

Yup, that's realistic. I don't think getting rid of Sven now is quite at the level of FFS and Robson, but it's not so far off.

Clearly they must have Mourinho lined up. ;)

I think it's just as bad to be honest.

Robson was going a little senile to be fair.

Yeah, but FFS compounded it by first undermining him for a good 1/2 season then keeping him on till the new season only to then sack him.

Whatshisface needs some lessons before he's into FFS league, not a bad first try though.

I heard, from someone who knows Shepherd quite well (not Leazes btw ;) ), that Shepherd took Robson on holiday that summer and was going to tell him he was letting him go gently as it were but bottled it / didn't have the heart. No idea if it's true but the person in question isn't a bullshitter. She told me another tale which more or less confirms Robson's senility too.

Yay!

Lets kill every thread with needless argument ;)

It's not needless. It's the crux of Fop's opinion....that he can't back up.

Just ignore a lot of the posts now. See the start of the argument and what its about, then just skip on through.

Arguing about attendances isn't pointless at all however ;)
