NE Clubs to sue

MANCHESTER UNITED were last night sensationally warned: Play a weakened side against Hull and we’ll sue you.

Relegation-haunted Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland fear Alex Ferguson will rest his stars against Hull on Sunday ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League final against Barcelona.

If Hull win they will stay up — and send two of the three North East clubs down, costing them £30million apiece in lost revenue.

Paragraph E20 of Premier League rules states: “In every league match each participating club should field a full strength team.”

No club has ever been cited for breaching the rule. But officials from Newcastle, Boro and Sunderland have discussed taking action if United send out a shadow side in the final game of the season.

A source close to the talks told SunSport: “United have every right to think of themselves but that shouldn’t be to the detriment of others.

“If they field a reserve team at Hull who then win and stay up, then the consequences for two of the three North East clubs will be dire.

“No one is looking for a favour, just a level playing field. And if the rules are not adhered to there are means of recourse.”

If found guilty of breaching rules, United could face anything from a warning to a big fine.

They would also be open to legal action from any relegated club for compensation.

A Premier League spokesman said: “We are aware of this situation and we will be monitoring all matches on the final day of the season.”

will this make any difference to Sir Alex - or will he just do whatever he pleases ??

Hel just argue they are all in the first team squad as professional players, and if you cant play them whats the point of having a squad.

Wouldnt be so bad if he was playing his 2nd string, but it sounds like hes playing his 3rd string, Wellbeck, Macheda, Tosic and the likes

Guest alex

He'll no doubt point out Ferdinand is playing (according to the Beeb at least), albeit to prove his fitness.

I'd be embarrassed if we tried to sue them as well. Admittedly not much more embarrassed than I already am of those running the show behind the scenes.

Won't Ronidildo want to play?

He'll miss out on the chance of picking up the Golden Boot if he doesn't won't he? Obviously assuming Anelka plays and scores.

pathetic really.................

a bit more effort in running the clubs and buying decent players is what they should be doing............

Jesus christ, how pathetic would we be to do this?

If the players are registered with the Premier League, they're eligable to play.

Non-story IMO

TRIO DISMISS ACTION AGAINST UNITED

Relegation-haunted trio Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland have dismissed claims they could sue Manchester United if they field a weakened team this weekend.

Reports on Wednesday suggested the three clubs had held discussions as they prepare for a decisive final round of Premier League fixtures on Sunday with the highest of stakes.

Hull, who are currently a point clear of 18th-placed Newcastle inside the drop zone, face United at the KC Stadium days before the newly-crowned domestic title-holders defend their Champions League crown against Barcelona in Rome.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already indicated he will use the depth of his squad with nothing but pride at stake for his club.

Middlesbrough, who face West Ham at Upton Park, need the Tigers to lose if they are to have a chance of staying up, while the Magpies have to record a better result than Phil Brown's men if they are to survive.

Sunderland could go down if they lose to Chelsea and both Newcastle and Hull win, meaning all three of the north-east clubs have a vested interest in the side Ferguson sends out.

However, each were quick to deny they are ready to go to the courts on the basis of Premier League rules which require member clubs to field full-strength teams.

A Newcastle spokesman said: "There's no truth in it whatsoever."

Sunderland refused to comment on the story, but insisted there was no foundation to it, while a Boro spokesman said: "It's not true, it's nonsense."

Newcastle boss Alan Shearer was asked about the kind of side he expected Ferguson to field at Hull in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Fulham.

He said: "Alex, when he has been in that position, has always put out a side that does his club proud, so whoever he puts out, Manchester United are that professional so they will go out and try to win that game.

"I have not got any problems with that."

Ferguson has hinted that England defender Rio Ferdinand could yet play at the KC Stadium as he attempts to prove his fitness ahead of the Champions League final.

The 30-year-old has missed the club's last three games with a calf injury, but could be involved at the weekend.

Ferguson said: "I am hoping he will be fit for Sunday - if not, he is doubtful for Wednesday, that is for sure.

"I think he needs a game going into the Champions League final because him having not played for three weeks is too much."

Roll your eyes to that eh! :good:

We're going down because we've been shit for the last 37 games. Not because Man Utd will play a weak team.

well so have hull and sunderland, but we've played man u and chelsea mid season when they we're both still playing for the league and earned the 2 draws we've had against them

if hull and sunderland pick up points against those 2 with weakened sides then it is genuinely not fair considering how much is at stake, we aren't talking a mid table place and a difference of 1000000 prize money or whatever

Aye but we've thrown away games we should have won. As Alex said elsewhere, it's swings and roundabouts and tough shit and if it were happening to any other club than Newcastle you wouldn't blink an eyelid.

as opposed to hull and sunderland who haven't? every club in the relegation mire should have won some games they didn't

so my paying attention to it (or not) defines whether it is unfair or not?

i agree its tough shit - we are where we are and theres little to complain about - however it is de-valueing the league somewhat and technically going against E20.

didnt sheffield get compo from the tevezgate affair ??

Aye and there's as much chance that they'll go down as there is us. Tell me this, if we win, Hull win and Sunderland lose, will you be championing the Mackems' cause?

Why not argue that Liverpool didn't 'turn up' at the Riverside yet they tore us apart at SJP?

Aye but it still might be technically against the rules, although there's probably 1001 ways to argue it's not too.

Agreed. SAF has every right to field a weaker team to 'rest' his star players. Clubs rotate squads all the time.

Would be a massive embarrassment if we even considered suing. As for us playing bigger clubs when they fielded stronger teams - it's luck of the draw. Does that mean it's not fair if we play ManU and Ronaldo or Rooney for example are injured and yet someone else plays them the week after when they are back?

Imo, SAF will play a side which won't risk any of his major players which is exactly what we'd all do if we were in that position. My only hope is that he plays some players who will feel they are playing for a place in the squad for the CL game.

well that all depends on what sort of side chelsea play, if it is obviously a weakened one then they shoud have as much chance as hull and a better one than we do against a villa still fighting for something if, however, chelsea go full strength and man u dont then it wouuld be as much an injustice for them as it would for us

as for boro liverpool, pool were still chasing the league then, it mattered to them and, looking at the side they put out, they weren't fielding a load of reserves

Villa have nowt to play for either tbf and may not be trying their hardest. It's just the luck of the draw in the end.
