Newcastle Finances in the Championship

I have no blind faith, the bit you've just said has proven my point. Shepherd wasnt sat there scratching his arse and permanently ringing Barclays to say "can I borrow another £40m for a trophy signing?" from what you say they were looking at other options to raise the money needed to move the club on and thats my point. This football club had been dragged up from the brink of the abyss by Shepherd & Hall, there is therefore no proof that they were unable to do the same again.

To imagine they were sat like gormless idiots without a notion of how to raise finance does an injustice to two of the regions most successful businessmen imo.

Thing is PP, we know exactly what they did to deal with the financial position the club was in, and they absolutely didn't sit like gormless idiots, rather, they did an obscenely quick cut and run.

or you could use your own argument that they sold up to ensure the future of the club, you cant have it both ways. You cant slate them for not being able to sort the finances, state that Ashley is the person who saved us and then slate Hall/Shepherd for selling to him in the 1st place!

"They" however didnt up and run, Hall did yes, he made a deal with Ashley behind Shepherds back and took the cash. I dont agree with doing that but its what he did. We always knew however that Hall, more than Shepherd was in it for the money.

Doesnt mean however that it was their only avenue or that they would have done nothing had Ashley not turned up with the gormless look on his face that screamed out "Im too rich to bother looking into things". Thats the issue here, the assumption that two of the most successful businessmen in the North East would have been unable to come up wth a plan to raise the income of the club and/or additional finance other than a Barclays loan.

There was always Ocean finance.

....or turning off the escalator. :icon_lol:

Mike Ashley could have used that escalator, to get upstairs in the new Asda on the site of SJP :D

FFS had the look for the ads

To be honest it was a bit of a throwaway comment, but to be honest the more I've thought about it ................. :D

You DO want it both ways don't you :icon_lol:

He's explaining to you that they saved the club, and if anybody wanted to sell the club in the end, it was the Halls.

Yet you don't dispute it, and STILL don't even mention them, only a derisory comment about Shepherd.

You're totally, totally obsessed man with your hatred Get over it for fucks sake.

It actually all stacks up, divi's dried up, future credit would have to have been underwritten by their personal assets, Freddie buying up shares and purely by coincidence, £3million of club cash spent tryin to get rid, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

you didn't say that to PP ? He was talking about Hall taking the money and you just made a comment about Shepherd, you can't help yourself, I bet you blame him when it rains you're so fuckin obsessed :D

So. Where do you think we will be in 5 years time, ie 9 years of Ashleys "plan". Will you start going back to games now that we are struggling rather than being in europe and buying these trophy players ?

Yes I did, because he was the one buying up shares, strange ain't it, that I should mention the person buying up shares by name when describing a piece of the jigsaw that is directly relevant to said buying of shares by that named personage. :icon_lol:

Other question already answered on other thread :icon_lol:

Edit - I didn't mention it to PP as it was a throwaway line, but then I got to thinking about it and had sort of an epiphany moment, looked at the financial figures/trends etc again and it all stacks up, Hall and FFS were fucking geniuses.

Apologies if already posted, seemed an apt place to put it :

The redoubtable Karren Brady is once again displaying her penchant for slugging it out with the male heavyweights of the football world.

The outspoken West Ham vice-chair took Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias to task for his recent claim that Newcastle wouldn't exist without owner Mike Ashley.

Brady said: "Rubbing his boss with the embrocation of gross flattery, he says: ‘Quite honestly, Newcastle United would not be here without him.’ Quite honestly, that’s rubbish.

“The club is bigger than him, just as West Ham is bigger than us all. Newcastle United will exist when Mike Ashley has gone to the great casino in the sky.”

The formidable lady who irked deposed Sky sexist Richard Keys and his boorish sidekick Andy Gray so much certainly doesn't pull her punches and has now delivered a stinging uppercut to the Llambias-Ashley mutual appreciation society.

And, while many Geordies will opine that she should concentrate on her own problems at Upton Park which include the rather pressing matter of avoiding relegation, many Toon Army followers will agree with her acerbic Ashley analysis.

Unlike many of her male colleagues in football, at least Brady has the bottle to debunk the myth that there would be no Newcastle United without Ashley.

In my book a club with such a massive and loyal fanbase and a 52,000 capacity stadium will always exist as long as it has competent ownership.

After their briefings on Newcastle's latest accounts for the year end June 2010 some journalists have been busy peddling a predictable "Ashley is Newcastle's saviour" line and suggesting that financially the Magpies are making steady progress.

But, after perusing the figures, I remain far from convinced that Ashley's financial performance over his first three years deserves such plaudits.

Yes, the Sports Direct tycoon has ploughed a lot of money into the club-including £134million for the purchase and even more to run it- but I don't think there is very much to show for Ashley's huge input in terms of either footballing or financial progress.

And, given the spectacular business success he achieved at Sports Direct, I am pretty certain that Ashley himself will be disappointed with the poor return on his investment.

Newcastle's debt according to the accounts published last week stands at £150million- £140million of which is owed directly to Ashley.

In the last full financial year before Ashley's takeover on May 23, 2007, Newcastle's total liabilities stood at £146million. At December 31,2006, net liabilities had risen to £152million.

So in Ashley's first three years the published figures show that there is only a minimal change in the size of Newcastle's net liability. The main difference is that the vast majority of the debt is now owed to the owner himself rather than the bank or other external creditors.

Ashley undoubtedly deserves credit for making his loans available on an interest-free basis and therefore reducing charges to the club.

But the way his regime has allowed the wages-to-turnover ratio to spiral since 2007 is the single biggest reason for Newcastle's heavy losses.

Put simply for every £10 of turnover generated by Newcastle, they now hand out £9 in wages. It quite bluntly represents the economics of the madhouse.

Relegation to the Championship forced Newcastle into a necessary and drastic pruning of the wage bill that saw it reduce from £71million to £46million.

But the key wages-to-turnover indicator still rose from 82.6% to a staggering 90.6% because income predictably fell dramatically in the second tier of English football.

It was a massive gamble that paid off as Ashley achieved his overwhelming priority of winning promotion back to the lucrative Premier League at the first time of asking.

But if Newcastle are to progress as a Premier League club under Ashley then the wages-to-turnover ratio must be pegged back to something closer to 70 per cent.

And Newcastle simply must start recording operating profits. The operating loss on the relegation season and the Championship campaign were £37million and £33million respectively.

This translated into net losses for the two season of £15million and £17million when the profits on transfers were taken into account.

But therein lies one of the inherent problems of the Ashley strategy - the constant selling during his ownership of prize assets.

When the British record sale of Andy Carroll is taken into consideration, Newcastle have sold more than £100million worth of footballers since Ashley arrived in May 2007.

Ashley called it correctly when retaining the bulk of his relegated squad in 2009, but at regular intervals he has sanctioned quality players being sold for large fees.

Scott Parker, Shay Given, James Milner, Sebastien Bassong and Carroll are just some of those, who in my opinion, who should not have been allowed to leave St James' Park.

It appears to outsiders that the strategy is now to cash in on top playing assets at regular intervals and that is why the Toon Army won't be surprised to see Jose Enrique and Joey Barton depart this summer.

And longer term past history will have Geordie fans bracing themselves for short stays from impressive signings such as Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheik Tiote.

Throw in the fact that under Ashley, Newcastle have had six managers in less than four years and it isn't difficult to understand why the club's footballing fortunes have been as unremarkable as its financial progress.

Don't get me wrong I genuinely believe Ashley and Llambias are learning from their past mistakes, but like Ms Brady I am still a long way from writing rave reviews about their achievements.

Llambias has spelled out a vision of the future where Newcastle nurture and buy promising young talent, challenge in the top ten of English football and aim for Europe.

The next accounts boosted by Carroll's £35million, Premier League football almost certainly being assured for August 2011 and improved TV revenues will make more encouraging reading.

Creating some semblance of stability by giving manager Alan Pardew and key players long-term deals will also help morale but as the Carroll departure shows five-year contracts don't mean a thing.

Deeds mean far more than words and Ashley must prove that in future Newcastle will have more robust fiscal policies and a stronger financial base to demonstrate that they are no longer the selling club most people believe they have become. Controlling wage inflation is central to creating a platform that allows Newcastle to hold on their star players.

The Magpies top brass have started on that route but there is still a long way to go.

But, hopefully, Llambias will heed Brady's advice to ease up on the acclaim for Ashley until the owner actually delivers something tangible to the Toon Army.

if only they knew.........

some members, in fact a fair number, of the Toon Army are so stupid they have long ago believed he "brought something tangible to them"

Which is of course embarrassingly and stupidly correct...if only they knew.........wouldn't they laugh.

She is of course, absolutely correct in what she says.

Howay, plug your brain in. This kind of ambiguous statement is typical of Ashley’s tenure. If you want to understand what it means you have to remove the ambiguity, and doing that leaves the following target.

Not finishing lower than tenth.

It’s a negative target that exposes a negative attitude.

That's opinion and wrong imo too. The article highlights the wages to turnover ratio in the championship of 90% without explaining that this will have dropped to around 50 or 69% this season.

So if liabilities are the same as in 2007, half the posts in this thread about how Ashley has made the debt worse were just bollocks.

Source?

Whoever they are, they seem to be having trouble understanding the flow of time.

If you want to read it that way and apply the negative slant, ok, I was being purposefully pedantic for the codger as he (wrongly - well there's a surprise) portrays 10th as the stated summit of the target.

T'is all irrelevant anyway, we won't know how badly they want to finish "no lower than 10th" until we see what the summer spend is.

THIS summer, after he's sold our top striker to a club we used to finish above for a record fee :D

What happened to all the previous summers.

I hope you have this firmly bookmarked, I look forward to

1. We will see what he does next January

2. Give him to this summer, he has the money from Enrique.

Are you buying a season ticket to witness the exciting times ahead, with your man on the right road, to help him boost revenue to what it used to be, like many other thousands ?

When is your prediction of european football again ? Where "my boys" qualified more than any other club bar 4 over a 15 year stretch, expectations being such that they were booed by tosspot supporters when they only finished 5th. Yet you are supporting a man who has stated he will be happy to finish 10th :icon_lol:

Strange isn't it, how your outlook and ambitions are firmly entrenched at the levels of Stoke and Bolton etc, as they were under McKeag, Seymour etc which led to years of 2nd rate football, a half empty stadium, one foot in the 3rd divison and administration ? And it attracts your optimism more than the Halls and Shepherd did ?

You're mad.

Tell us your long term forecast, where do you think your man is leading the football club ? I've told you mine, I've been saying it on here, NO and skunkers for over 3 years, I'm sticking by it and it's sadly looking more and more likely the longer he stays here.

Big Ash has allowed yous to play teams like Man Utd and Liverpool. You guys should be robbing the bog roll from his bin and hanging it on your walls you should love the man that much. Without him yous would be playing Stockport County. So grow up lads and stop expecting European cups to fall from trees.

We'll see European football again a LOT quicker under Ashley than we EVER would have under continued ownership of FFS/Halls, because we'd be SKINT (er) man !! and you can include the 4 years he's had repairing the damage in that an all (if he wasn't such a prick himself it'd probably have only taken 3 years).

They've done you like a kipper man.

They had no intention of staying "for the club", they'd milked it dry, they spent money the year before trying to get rid because the £4 mill dividends had gone for ever and god forbid they'd have to risk any of their own cash/assets.
