good recovery. england's best player stepping up to his new job. new ball just around the corner but we've done well to get close to a respectable total after it was 80-4 or whatever in the first session

big questions remain over the top order.  if you're going to throw the kid jennings in there, you'd want someone with a bit more class coming in at number 3 than ballance, who should be down the order, if in the side at all. he's had plenty of chances.

broad's having a bit of fun now, going into one day mode and giving himself some room in the last wicket stand. worth tuning in if you can as i can't see it lasting too much longer

Think we have a decent total now.  Their batting lineup is looking a bit short and we have plenty of bowling options.

yeah. it's a good first innings lead. we haven't quite batted them out of the game though in the way it looked we might the way root and moeen were going last night

I could understand a bit more if Rashid was a proper rabbit but he's a very good lower order batsman. Also, seems an odd ground on which to play two spinners anyway so it's not really giving Dawson much of a chance in what is only his 2nd test.

it's about rashid's development and the negative impact being dropped for the home series might have on it. i'm not too sure what he'd done wrong to be dropped for dawson. he looked like the senior spinner during the winter series, and cook was starting to throw him the bowl before moeen. perhaps root doesn't fancy him.

They have also had one eye on the weather. The sun has been baking down in London for a week now and the pitch is looking dry, cracks could help the two spinners even more as the game progresses. I think Rashid is by far the better bowler on why little I've seen of Dawson so far mind

england's top order batting issues exposed yet again. jennings arguably deserves another test or two to see if he can turn his form around (who else is there in the never-ending quest to find an opening partner for cook?), but ballance has to go now, surely?

The team selection was ridiculous for this match.  Two spinners couldn't have been less needed.  Stoneman should have been given a chance (should have been years ago really), play Jennings at 3 and Ballance at 5 where he's been doing well.  That said, I think Ballance has ran out of chances now.  He doesn't look like he's trying to learn from the problems he's been having at test level.

Shocker for Bairstow there.  Not that it matters much, we'll lose this today no doubt.

fucking hell, did anyone have the misfortune to catch the end of that? that was an embarrassing collapse, even by england's standards. new captain, same old problems. they seem incapable of trying to play the conditions. they were never going to salvage a result, but they could have at least tried to play for pride and and attempted to bat out three or four sessions - that could have at least shown they had a bit of fight in them and hopefully let them take some momentum into the next game. instead they roll over, as per. big selections decisions due ahead of the next test match. dawson and ballance both look vulnerable. could do with winning the toss too.

Apparently we've only scored over 200 in the 4th innings 4 times under Baylis.  We've improved massively with the white ball under him but our test form isn't great at all.

I don't think we'll see much if any changes for the next test.  They're saying Wood might not be up to three in a row (nothing was happening for him this match) so he might be replaced with Ball.

Ballance just keeps doing exactly the same things and hopes for a different result.  His technique is fine for county level but is now exposed at test level.  There's no point in playing him.  Jennings form is worrying but there's plenty of time for him to put that right.  With Ballance it's obvious nothing will change now.
