However, a statement on the Spurs website read: "Liverpool FC have acknowledged that the way its website reported comments of its manager, which were widely covered by the media, was inappropriate and in light of that acknowledgement has apologised and agreed to make a donation to our Club's main charity, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. "Tottenham Hotspur has therefore agreed not to pursue its official complaint to the Premier League." I don't regard it as a transfer deal - that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade - this is very much an enforced sale "I have already made my opinion clear on the nature of this transaction. "I don't regard it as a transfer deal - that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade - this is very much an enforced sale, for which we have agreed a sum of £19m as compensation plus a potential further £1.3m in additional compensation."

Up your game for this'un if it comes off. You completely neglected to clarify the Gutierrez and Guthrie transfers. That's probably why Jonas' registration hasn't came through yet -

Barton is released from prison Footballer Joey Barton has been released from jail after serving two months of a six-month sentence for attacking a man. The 25-year-old Newcastle midfielder was captured on CCTV in Liverpool on 27 December punching a man. He admitted assault and affray in April for the attack which was branded a "violent and cowardly act" by a judge. Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan said on Sunday that the footballer still had a future with the club.

ALAN SMITH wants a regular striking role at Newcastle and the chance to show Kevin Keegan there can be life without Michael Owen and Mark Viduka. The England star failed to shine in a makeshift attack alongside Shola Ameobi as a depleted Toon side crashed to a 1-0 defeat to Championship newcomers Doncaster courtesy of Stuart Elliott’s 86th-minute goal. Smith was turned into a midfielder during his time at Manchester United and spent most of his first season at St James’s Park in a similar role following his £6m switch from Old Trafford last August. He failed to score a single goal last season, but insists he hasn’t forgotten how to find the back of net – providing Keegan gives him the chance to do so. With both Viduka and Owen battling to be fit for the new campaign and Obafemi Martins back in Nigeria mourning the death of his mother, Smith might get his wish. The ex-Leeds star said: “When I was playing for Manchester United, before I broke my leg, I was playing in central midfield. “I then missed 18 months with my injury and when Sam (Allardyce) brought me to Newcastle, he played me all over. That never really helps you. “It doesn’t allow you to become consistent and it doesn’t really allow you to become settled. “The gaffer knows where he wants to play me and if he’s going to play me up there, I’m going to have to start scoring goals. I’m going to have to start playing as a centre-forward, like I did when I was at Leeds and like I did when I first went to United. I know I can do that. “I’d enjoy an extended run at centre-forward and I think everyone knows that’s probably my best position. “It’s what’s natural to me, but if I’m going to play there and stay in the team, I’m going to have to score goals.” Keegan vowed to make some new signings in the wake of this defeat and Smith admits the pressure is on their threadbare squad to finish in the top half of the table this season. He added: “We had a lot of players missing, but hopefully they will be fit for the start of the season. “Realistically, for this football club, the top half of the table is a must. “When you look around the dressing-room, the quality is there, but football now is more and more of a squad game.”

Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan is heading for a showdown with his board after offering troubled Joey Barton a fresh start yesterday. Owner Mike Ashley, after months of trying to offload the player and then cut his £71,000 per week wages, is resigned to having Barton back on his release from prison. But while Ashley wants to take a hard line, Keegan has opened the door to immediate conciliation with the player. Newcastle have already failed to send Barton — expected to be released from Strangeways this week after being sentenced in May to six months’ jail for assault — to Bolton on a free transfer, although they do expect to reopen negotiations on the former Manchester City midfielder taking a substantial pay cut when he returns to Tyneside. Keegan, who gave Barton his debut at City, surprisingly appealed for understanding for the player when he does return. He told BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek: ‘People have opinions and you must accept that, but mine is to give him another chance and back him. There are a lot of things he needs to put right but I think we can do it. ‘It’s well documented he has had his problems but I knew of them. He’s served his sentence and he has been punished. I told him as long as from now on he did things right and started to rebuild the confidence of people around him, I would stick by him.’ Keegan’s stance yesterday is believed to have surprised and infuriated the Newcastle board who have been trying to end Barton’s Newcastle career or at least change the terms of his contract. When he was first imprisoned, his agent Willie MacKay arranged a move to Bolton but it fell through. Talks over Barton’s wages have since stalled but should be resolved on his release for a sentence imposed following his attack on a teenager in Liverpool last year. The confrontation over Barton’s future is the latest to rock St James’ since Keegan was re-hired last season and guided the club away from relegation. At the end of the last campaign the former England boss was summoned to a meeting with Ashley and then chairman Chris Mort to explain comments made to the media about Newcastle’s chances — or lack of them — of winning silverware and the league title in particular. Keegan left that meeting with no doubt about his future conduct, particularly in relation to his media role, which is all the more reason why his interview with the BBC will have raised eyebrows at the highest level. The interview was conducted by David Davies, formerly the FA’s Executive Director when Keegan was England manager. Davies is no stranger to controversy, having penned Glenn Hoddle’s autobiography when employed by the FA, which many players believed fractured dressing room relationships with the former England coach. To add to Keegan’s problems Newcastle have been slow in the transfer market this summer, landing only Danny Guthrie from Liverpool and Argentina star Jonas Gutierrez. The Newcastle boss refused to do pre-match press conferences before friendlies at Doncaster and Hartlepool in the hope that he would not put his foot in it regarding transfer failings but he has said new signings are likely in the near future and that he is looking at full backs in particular.

Coloccini ready to shun Prem duo Newcastle and West Ham target Fabricio Coloccini has played down rumours linking him with a move away from Deportivo La Coruna. The Magpies and the Hammers have been linked with a move for the rugged central defender this summer. Deportivo are determined to keep hold of Coloccini and the Argentine international says he is no rush to leave the Riazor. "As I have always said since the rumours came out, I will stay at Deportivo La Coruna," Coloccini said. "I am in contract and I am happy. I am perfectly well at my team and for the moment and for what I know, I will continue playing at Deportivo La Coruna. Offer"I didn't say in any moment that I wanted to leave La Coruna or that I had a real offer. After I played the games for the the Argentinean national team I got disconnected from everything. "If I have to leave La Coruna depends on the club. It depends if they receive an important offer for my transfer. "For the moment there hasn't been any official proposal, the club hasn't received anything."

El-Hadji Diouf is on the verge of a £2.5m move to Sunderland as the Black Cats continue their rebuilding plans ahead of the new Premier League season. The Senegal international, 27, had one season left on his Bolton contract but had expressed his desire to leave. Diouf, who can play as a striker or on the wing, spent four seasons at the Reebok Stadium after initially joining the club on loan from Liverpool. The player is due to have a medical at the Stadium of Light later on Sunday. Sunderland manager Roy Keane has been busy in the transfer market in recent days, signing Tottenham duo Teemu Tainio and Pascal Chimbonda. He is also interested in signing two more Spurs players, Steed Malbranque and Younes Kabul, as he looks to strengthen his squad.

Plymouth Argyle youngster Aaron Spear will finally complete his move to Newcastle United this week after the clubs agreed on a £250,000 transfer fee. The long-running saga will reach a conclusion with the 15-year old striker moving to Tyneside this week. Argyle were first offered £150,000 for their prodigy but held out for more cash and a deal has now been thrashed out. Dennis Wise, the Newcastle Executive Director, along with scout Lil Fuccillo, visited Plymouth in June to speak to Spear and his parents. It was after that meeting that Spear decided to join Newcastle despite interest from Arsenal, Portsmouth and Everton. Spear, who has been dubbed the 'new Wayne Rooney', is currently on schoolboy terms at Home Park, and the rules state the club are entitled to receive a fee if the youngster moves to another club.
