Stoke City have released Dominic Matteo, Russell Hoult, Marlon Broomes and Robert Garrett as manager Tony Pulis plans for life in the Premier League. Out-of-contract captain Dominic Matteo joined Stoke from Blackburn in 2007 and suffered an injury-plagued 2007/08 campaign that saw him start 14 league games. Russell Hoult, Marlon Broomes and Robert Garrett were also released, while on loan striker Shola Ameobi returned to Newcastle United. "The work has already begun," said Pulis on the club's official website. "Over the last two seasons I have had to build a new squad for each of them seasons and this year will be no different. "We will make sure we get the best players we can at the best prices we can, but them players have to not only be good enough to keep us up, but they must also be the right players with the right attitude."

Joey Barton: Big mug with a Big Mac... By Jasper Gerard Last Updated: 1:22am BST 22/05/2008 One of the more disturbing aspects of the Joey Barton assault case is that he dines at McDonald's. A footballer could spend more on a watch than adoring fans might on a house, yet still these "athletes" consume food I wouldn't feed my spaniel. Lee Bowyer was fined for affray at a McDonald's "restaurant" after getting into a fearsome row with a group of chairs. What do they put in those burgers? advertisementTrue, Barton's Big Mac-fuelled savagery might have been excacerbated by high-energy drinks augmenting his fine dining experience - 10 pints and five bottled lagers - but it's a generation since Ray Wilkins, Ian Rush et al went to Italy and discovered a) the natives "speak foreign" and pasta. While England regulars tend to monitor their diets now, many Premiership "stars" still commit GBH against bone-headed numpties: themselves. . . .and who pays the jailbird's wages? Another Barton concern: if Newcastle honour his £60,000 per week contract while he's slopping out, how much will the taxpayer contribute? Northern Rock, bailed out by the Exchequer, is to continue sponsoring his Newcastle team. One might stomach Michael Owen's bill at the bookies, but the effective nationalisation of Barton? Still, there is a certain symmetry between Northern Rock and Newcastle: both hoped to take on the big four, and both over-extended. And just as the taxpayer might never again see a fair slice of the fortune it "invested" in Northern Rock, so Newcastle's sponsorship windfall has long since blown to the winds. In any other industry Barton would be sacked. Yet Newcastle, it seems, can't afford the bullet. Still, all this huffing about Barton being unfit to wear the shirt is a bit rich. After all, Newcastle signed Lee Bowyer. Perhaps Toon, in turn, could sponsor a wing at Broadmoor.

It's like being asked to choose between AIDS or Cancer, for me.

I think its a great idea, especially if it's at Portaloo road.

The club have been aware of this since last month I'd assume (when he pleaded guilty) and must've known that a custodial sentence was certain. Does a guilty plea automatically mean a shorter sentence ? yes Then clearly the guilty plea was a no-brainer.

Didn't Leicester do this with one of their players a few years ago, who had beaten up a team mate and left him nursing a broken jaw ?? A former Chelsea player...... Dennis something.......

Looks more like SWP's identical twin !

As much as this story is probably bollocks, I always had the gut feeling that Mort wouldn't be round for the long haul, he's over seen the main transitions of the takeover which was probably his remit from the very beginning.

Thoroughly enjoyed that, so much so I got "as long as you don't kiss me" too.

Aye. And so's the second half. I love the film but I think it should have ended with Pyle blowing his brains out. It is pretty much two films but I think it works. However, once you know loads of the 2nd half was shot in derelict areas of Docklands you can't help thinking about it looking like that instead of war-torn Vietnam. Totally agree, I think that has a lot to do with why I'm not as fond of the second part as I am the first, but I guess the story is really Joker's story so the film does need to continue after Pyle's death.

Pure and simply because they are Rent-a-crowd.

The control is a different concept, you point on the screen with the Wii-mote where you want your player to run to, you point at the player you want to pass to and press B, you swing the nunchuck to shoot, piece of piss. ASDA are doing it for £27.

If he keeps his nose clean he'll probably only serve 3months.

If you don't want to do that, you can drag and drop the players to switch them about BTW. I tried that and I'm sure it didn't work, I'll have another go. You need to press A&B together. Rather fiddly. Cheers
