Portsmouth line up Fernandes deal Portsmouth are on the verge of signing Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes for a club record £10m, reports BBC Radio Solent. The 20-year-old Benfica player is expected to have a medical on Thursday before discussing personal terms. If Fernandes signs the deal would smash Portsmouth's previous record of the £4m paid for Benjani Mwaruwari in January. Fernandes was set to fly into the UK on Wednesday after Portsmouth reached an agreement in principle with Benfica. Fernandes is a product of Benfica's youth system who made his first-team debut during the 2003/04 season, under then coach Jose Antonio Camacho. He was part of the Portugal youth team that reached the quarter-finals of the Fifa U17 World Championship. In February 2005 he made his international debut for the senior team against the Republic of Ireland but he missed out on selection for Portugal's world Cup squad in Germany.

The broadband pricing war has heated up with satellite firm BSkyB launching a free service for its subscribers. Under the offer, existing network customers can get its 2Mb Base package for free. Sky expects 30% of its eight million network users to sign up. New subscribers to Sky Digital will be able to sign up for its broadband offering for between £5 and £17. Sky said it would spend about £250m on the move, adding it expected to invest a further £400m over three years. Shares in the group fell on the news amid analyst fears that the decision may mean expensive initial outlays - partly down to the cost of installing Sky equipment in BT telephone exchanges to access the local loop. Sky's shares closed down 4.3% following the announcement. 'Transformational' move "Sky is ideally equipped to enter the large and growing markets of broadband and telephony by pushing the boundaries of the home entertainment market," chief executive James Murdoch said. "This is a transformational new initiative for Sky." Sky's new service aims to compete with market leaders BT, AOL and NTL. Like Sky these firms also offer a different range of packages, depending on things like download speed and, in BT's case, usage caps. Take into account other elements such as introductory offers, length of contract, installation costs, line rental, off-peak tariffs, and upgrade costs, and it can be tricky to make a direct comparison between different offers. Meanwhile Sky will also face competition from heavily subsidised broadband services offered by mobile phone operator Orange. Industry analysts also expect the group to widen its online entertainment portfolio - offering more than its current movie and sports downloads. Meanwhile, Mr Murdoch also hinted that Sky planned to expand its reach online by admitting the company is among the suitors looking to buy Time Warner's AOL access business in the UK. "We would look at it from purely an opportunistic basis," he told reporters. Tariffs Sky - which is 38% owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation - will begin signing up customers for the three-tier service, offering download speeds from 2Mb to 16Mb, which launches next month. While customers will not have to pay for the ongoing service they will have to pay installation and connection fees. These range from nothing to £50. Only 28% of UK households are currently covered by Sky's broadband network but it will be rolled out to 70% by the end of next year. Customers currently not covered by Sky's network are being offered a fourth Connect broadband service, which carries the highest tariff of those on offer. Meanwhile, prospective broadband customers will also still need to have a BT line for the service which costs £11.99 a month.

The company's would have to agree on a universal voltage too, too many different system voltages for there to be on universal charger, but I think it could be done, maybe with a system similar to USB.

http://www.itv-football.co.uk/Story/0,1427...1349589,00.html Boumsong set for Marseille Jean-Alain Boumsong's turbulent Newcastle career appears to be almost over after Marseille stepped up their chase for him. Boumsong has never really settled on Tyneside, having struggled to justify the £8million fee former boss Graeme Souness paid Rangers in January 2005. But the centre-half, an unused substitute in France's World Cup final defeat to Italy, is still highly-rated in his homeland and has long been linked with a return to Ligue 1 with l'OM. Glenn Roeder is ready to sanction a season-long loan deal for Boumsong with a view to a permanent move in a bid to free up his own desire to strengthen the Magpies' ranks. However, the manager would prefer a straight cash sale and is also thought to be willing to accept a cut-price £3million. Newcastle's first-team squad travelled to Oslo on Wednesday morning to prepare for this weekend's decisive Intertoto Cup match against Lillestrom and, although Roeder had hoped to make a breakthrough ahead of Saturday's third round, second leg meeting, there were no new players on the plane to the Norwegian capital. Boumsong's name is high on the list of those who are surplus to requirements at St James' Park and, should Marseille press home their interest in the French international, it would be a considerable boost for the Toon boss. Marseille general manager Pape Diouf admitted that his side will continue their pursuit of the much-maligned defender. "Jean-Alain Boumsong is an experienced player who is part of the French team and who has shown all of his defensive efficiency in Ligue 1. "His transfer is complex on a financial level, as with every player who is in England, but we will go on with this case." Roeder will hope a deal can be resolved quickly and, with Boumsong not due back in the North-East until July 29 as a result of his World Cup participation, it remains to be seen whether the defender will ever return to Tyneside. Meanwhile, the Magpies have appointed Joe Joyce as Glenn Roeder's successor as Academy manager. The former head of coaching at the Professional Footballers' Association, will take over responsibility for the club's youth set-up on September 4 after Roeder took over as first-team boss. The Toon boss told the club's official website: "He fits the bill, and I'm confident with Joe in charge of the team that I can leave the Academy in safe hands and let him get on with it. "I will be in touch with him once every couple of weeks to find out what I need to know, but in essence I will just be letting Joe get on with things, and I'm confident the Academy will grow under his leadership."

Is he thick or very funny? I'm always using "Does the pope shit in the woods?" 161603 I think he was a bit of both, he's retired now sadly, we used to call them Arthurisms.

I recall we had a manager once that would mix his phrases up, one classic was: "you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it put its foot on the ladder" This is the same manager that claimed his hotel room had a suzuki in the bath.

Agreed, better to have them dressed like pimps on the golf course than on the streets !

Next time try a game of Bullshit Bingo: We tried it once, it was great watching everyone trying to stifle the giggles.

That sounds about right. The first card is totally knackered, but I managed to get the photos off my second card using a card reader. The camera appears to be OK now, but I'm probably going to upgrade shortly anyway. Bought a new compact flash card in the mean time - 8 quid for half a gig from Amazon - how do they make a profit? 161518 Should have tried ebuyer.co.uk, I got a 1gig Compact Flash card for £14 last week.

its been said many times before, and not a fact I'm proud of either. I remember I was in Cardiff once and I was asked which part of Australia I was from.
