On a similar note I was talking to mate of mine recently and we were on about this house party we were at and when someone had Ceefax ( ) up on the telly and it was announced that Kurt Cobain was dead. I think it probably had more impact than any other celebrity death on us lot because of our age, his popularity and how all of us there were into his music. I checked and it must've been the Easter holidays in my first year at university because it was 1994. I knew it was a good while ago but 23 years ffs. David Grohl still looks great, btw. Definitely aged better than Chris Novoselic anyway.

Aye. It was Greece. It was actually the side that Rehhagel (sp?) had just taken over and went on to win Euro 2004 a couple of years later. Beckham's free-kick was an equaliser and we only qualified because Germany were held to a 0-0 draw in (I think) Finland. They got through via a play-off. The press raved about Beckham but I watched the whole game again as it was repeated on the Sunday morning. He did take the game by the scruff of the neck but only in the last 25 mins or so at home against a side that were well organised but not exactly amazing. It was also about his 5th or 6th free-kick from a good position and the others were fucking dog shit. I like Beckham as well, it's just funny how the press blow things out of proportion. He'd have been slated along with the rest of the side had Germany won 1-0.

I can barely even remember watching that game yet I know I did. Says it all really.

It made me think of watching the match when England beat Hungary at a packed Wembley to secure World Cup qualification for Espana 82. I know there was much, much less football on TV then and that England hadn't qualified for a World Cup since 1970 but the difference in the interest in that match compared with the one last night was staggering. There were about 10 of my Dad's mates round watching it and everybody jumped up and cheered when Paul Mariner scored the game's only goal early in the first half. No one seems to give a shit now. Also, following on from what you two were saying, the annoying thing is that (while I'm not suggesting for a moment we should be winning the World Cup) we should have the makings of a pretty exciting young team.

Waiting for the punchline

Just remembered that match on the plastic pitch at Loftus Road when we were winning 4-nowt at half time and ended drawing 5-5. To make it even better we scored to make it 5-3 with about 5 minutes to go Was listening to it on Metro Radio and even at that young age I thought it was typical NUFC.
