  1. Gemmil, I think I just found the definitive thing that makes you feel old. The SBR era is recent history to me FFS. Younguns, don't know they're born!
  2. Aye. Something like a £1,000 match fee and then 1/3rd of your weekly basic pay for a draw, all of it for a win, would seem to be appropriate in the current climate. I still remember when the big story was Roy Keane getting £50k a week, that seemed to be when the floodgates opened, although thinking about it that was probably also about the same time as a TV deal.
  3. Indeed. I would say it's more likely we would suffer harder and longer if relegated than if not, but I can completely see where people are coming from by arguing we need to be relegated to get rid of Ashley.
  4. They're guaranteed fourth. You could argue they need a win to reach 3rd, but I'd be surprised if that's enough to get their players all fired up for an away game against Hull, at least any more than they ordinarily would be.
  5. They'd just have to suck it up. Just like a chairman must accept being in a lower division for at least a season, even though he suspects it's only because his players didn't try hard enough, or weren't as good as their market price/wages suggested they should be (and obviously I'm not remotely thinking of Ashley here).
  6. I don't care if we stay up or not, but that doesn't mean I can't be optimistic/pessimistic about the situation, or be interested in what others think about it, now we know for definite what's needed. Even Gemmil.
  7. I didn't see the game, but I'm guessing the reason we lost is a little bit more complicated than the one he offered - our apparent failure to get enough crosses in for the two strikers up front.
  8. Don't worry, I'd make sure there was a place for you in my New World Order gem lad.....
  9. How? What's logical about allowing players to move to another club on the same money when they've just sent their old club down through their ineptitude? Obviously you would hope such a rule wouldn't be needed and managers would simply have the sense not to keep signing them in the hope they'd do a better job next time around, but they don't.....just like chairman don't seem to tire of giving jobs to inept managers like Redknap et al. The premise of this thread is returning footballer's employment conditions to something that more closely resembles reality. Other than teaching, how many other careers are there where you can keep bouncing around at the same level on the same money, even though your CV is an ever growing list of failures?
  10. You say that like it's a bad thing....
  11. You don't need to change the pay .... free market and all that. To make the situation more closely resemble reality though, you do need to stop their ability to walk into another job on the same money. I'd implement a rule - and make it apply across UEFA - if you get relegated from a league and then leave the club - for the next year you would be banned from playing for a club at the same or a higher league level.
  12. He was bitterly disappointed. See, that has to prove he's one of us, right?
  13. Apparently you have to prove to them that I'm not a mackem wind up merchant. Good luck with that, they're not the brightest tools in the box in my experience. Their definition of a mackem appears to be anyone who disagrees with their nonsensical groupthink. They'd have banned Fish long ago if he was a member.......
  14. Realistically, there is only one scenario that now relegates us: Hull beat Man Utd at home We fail to beat West Ham at home Ordinarily, in any given season, you'd be happy with those odds. But this is no ordinary season. Man Utd's form right now is all over the place, and they have nothing to actually play for. Hull are managed by one of their old boys, who also has something to prove to our enemies. West Ham are managed by someone with something to prove to us, and our home form has been abysmal. I am not optimistic. I'm not even close to being optimistic. It's only the fact that Ashley has completely divorced me from caring what happens to the club while he's still here that's stopping me from hiding all the sharp objects in the house.
  15. Anyone who thought we had more of a chance playing an already relegated QPR rather than if they had still needed something, obviously knows nothing about football at all. If QPR had still needed something today, it would have been even money they would have collapsed and we'd have won it easily, with QPR likely ending the game with 8 men. The result of a game between an NUFC side that needed to score and a QPR playing for nothing but pride would have been easily predictable, it's only QPRs obvious lack of character that made it less certain.
  16. Carver. One of us. Fuck off you cunt.
  17. I didn't even get excited at us going up 1-0, it was beyond fucking obvious how long that would last. Better use of my time filling out the random quizzes Gemmil posts in General Chat than putting even a second's thought into the idea we might have won this game. The fact that Steve Bruce manages Hull will be the only thing that affects whether we stay up or not.
  18. And the Tories would find it incredibly easy to use those exact same graphs to support their own narratives about Labour.....higher spending and year on year defecits in times of economic prosperity. They can even use some of its own analysis against Labour - it says the year on year defecits would have been higher if it were not for the tax revenues collected from what was causing the boom.
  19. Republicanism hit a high of 25% during the divorce & Charles' second wedding, but has only declined since the most recent wedding etc. I think a lot of people might be deluding themselves if they think the monarchy is ending any time soon, or that Charles will do anything to hasten its end. The letters recently exposed showed him to be a decent, caring and intelligent person, much to the chagrin of the Guardian, who I think were hoping they showed him in a much worse light. I think it's even been rejected by Australia now, where iirc the Labour leader was proposing to become a republic once Liz pops her clogs.
  20. Well, there's car chase movies with no plot, and then there's the original Mad Max, which was still essentially just a car chase movie with no plot, but in many ways it was so so much more......the suspense, the genuine terror, the gritty realism (despite being set in the future), the quite deliberate choice to have little to no dialogue, the casting (not just of Gibson, but some of the other major characters). You would hope the fact that the same person behind the original also did the new one would be a good sign, but Prometheus kind of screwed that....
  21. I'd only be impressed if it wasn't achieved using zero hours pickers and self-employed couriers.....
  22. So....Gemmil would eat himself if he could. Who knew?
  23. Nuts, I thought this would help me find my other clones. These 8 questions look like the sort of things you'd be asked when going for a half decent job these days.
  24. Not at all depressing. I consider myself old, but I am I am totally winning the yellow/black pie chart.....
