Clubcall can reveal that Lyon manager Houllier is now the front-runner for the United hotseat. But claims that the former Liverpool boss will take on a director of football role are wide of the mark. That job will go to Roeder as reward for steering the club into European contention while in caretaker charge. The new management team will also please Shepherd. The Toon chairman lands his desired high-profile boss in the shape of Houllier but will also appease supporters who wanted Roeder to get the job, which has been vacant since Graeme Souness was sacked in February.
