  4. On the subject of the economy, public spending cuts and the views of economists, i was reminded by the New Statesman about the 20 economists who wrote to The Times in Feb supporting spending cuts as essential to reducing the deficit. This was seized upon by the Tories and their supporters. What was less well publicised in the Tory press was the response by 67 economists in the FT calling them idiots and saying that the way to sort out the deficit was with expansionary policies that grow the economy. The debate boils down to whether the cuts will stifle the economic recovery. The FT letter strongly advised not to cut spending since with interest rates so low and growth so poor, private investment was not going to build a recovery and that public spending cuts would throttle the economy and mean the deficit would remain an issue. Of the 20 who wrote to The Times, only Roger Bootle was of note (head of a private economics consultancy). Of the 67 who wrote to the FT in response, Joseph Stiglitz was a key signatory. Importantly, the FT agreed with the Letter and supported it in their editorial. Apparently the FT have supported Labour since 1992, which might surprise a few people. http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-stag...s-deficit-times

  8. I dont really follow the first bit because I'm an uneducated and unemployed manual labourer But if you mean Thatcher's cuts to the nationlised industries which the country (especially the north of Britain) had formerly relied upon in the early 80's were the start of globalistion, then I'd completely agree with you. Go to any former major industrial area nowadays and see what happens to society when a community's reason for existing is taken away. We, and the lives of our loved ones, all seem to be expendable at the altar of increased profits, but look what that attitude has sown. Was that a reply or an addendum?
  9. What these stupid cunts forget is that this country became 'Great' Britain on the back of the industrial wealth of the north, once that wealth was created it was invested on the markets in London and the vehicles for its creation were left to rot. Basically there are two parts to human biology, psychology and sociolgy. There is the self-regarding, self-preserving gene and the advanced sharing and social gene. The latter has evolved as cohesive groups do better than non-collaborative ones. The power struggle is between those who dont see the need for cohesion and those who see it as an end in itself. The country is socially divided and with too many people prepared to live on benefits because a certain Prime Minster declared the end of society in the 80s. Work is a social activity not a private one. If you tell people they are on their own and they have nothing to start with and they dont see where any opporunities are, in two generations you are left with ingrained social problems. The seeds of the problems that article talks about where sown in the 80s, not in the last decade.
  10. "You could drive southwards the whole way from Lincolnshire to the Isle of Wight without leaving Conservative terrain. " ...and not meet a single person on the empty country roads...?
  11. Right back, midfielder and forward of much higher quality than we have would turn us into a decent team imo. Cant see the quality we need coming in though and some bad injuries would see us fucked.
  12. Nice resignation speech from GB i thought, the dark lord spun it beautifully straight after on the BBC too.
  13. Reveal the genre and i'll do the rest.
  14. Sounds like an exotic mushroom.
  15. Who voted for a hung parliament like? Daft bint but not much sympathy for him either though as he could have pointed that out.
  16. Nah, only if a buyers comes along willing to give him 137M + pay off debt. The cost of the club is well over 200m and no one wil pay that nowadays.
  17. Dont know how anyone can rate our chances on current form / injuries. Rooney - injured too much Gerrard - shite form Terry - shite form Ferdinand - shite form A Cole - injured too much Barry - injured Not sure the list stops there either.
  18. No, he doesnt want to sell since he has realised he will make a massive loss on his investment. He will pay the debt off and then sell it. In the long run, this may do us some good if we dont implode but in the long run, as HF said in the election thread, we are all dead so who gives a shit about 2055/56 season.
  19. My confident prediction of 15 to 20m spend over the summer looks to be spectacularly full of shit then.
  20. 55% of the electorate want a progressive social democracy, PR may be the only way to achieve it.
  21. The last thing the country needs is a return to ideology. We need pragmatic policies that grow the economy, invest in restructuring national production away from finance, ensuring that there is a geographically fair distribution of that growth. Yes we need to stimulate small business, the low value of the pound should be seen as an opportunity to encourage export led growth from traditional manufacturing cities, whilst investing in biotech and science driven innovation. We are still world leaders in higher education with two of the top ten universities in the world. There is opportunity in our economy as our labour laws are more flexible than our big EU neighbours. The country needs smart management, not ideology.
