  1. There was TONS of hype over here. There were strategic leaks as well as rampant speculation all over the place. Gawker was offering several thousands of dollars as a reward for just photos of the damn thing. You don't need to have publicly confirmed hard info for hype. It's not comparable to a netbook, though, because you'd have to buy an (expensive) keyboard attachment and dongle in order to type on the damn thing, and then you'd have to have a separate iPod to listen to music while you did it. a 10" touchscreen keyboard just isn't practical. 3G is nothing special when the surroundings are so limited. It's less portable than an iPhone, and doesn't provide enough extra to be worth it. Some people wanted a bigger screen, fine, but there's nothing new here, which is a major disappointment. And don't say it has great access to apps and media and such. It has restricted access to everything. It all must be done through Apple, which is my biggest complaint. If it weren't so closed, people could innovate solutions for stuff, but as it is, it's totally locked. Like releasing the 2G phone first, they will release shitty book reader first, then the next generation will have that real ink thing, probably improved upon. The downsized first version is to create the want for the proper version. The massive deals with the publishing industry that they signed shows their intent to develop this market. They 'will stand on the shoulders' of Amazon's Kindle as he put it. "Most people's idea of a computer is just fucking about on facebook" - thats the kind of market insight that drives decision making on product development. A good example of early criticism of the iPhone was the use of MMS. Who sends MMS nowadays? You upload photos to online galleries which you can share in an instant. Didnt stop everyone screaming the first iPhone was shit because you cant MMS. In 10 years time no-one will use MMS. Its the first piece in a development chain anyway so it'll interesting to see where it goes. The way i look at this is this is as powerful as a macbook, is always online, is about the size of a book and weighs fuck all, perfect for reading ebooks (or will be) and watching movies and listening to music and doing work and doing email and playing games and surfing the net. Which other product out there does all that? Genuine question. I dont know if this will 'change the way we read books' but from a business perspective, it will be interesting to watch. HF, it doesnt have an arm to stand it up, develop one.
  2. Sounds just like the discussions on iPhones around 3 years ago Ant. As i said, if you can find me a portable internet and email device (netbook) with 3G that has access to music, apps and books, and looks like this, i'd be surprised. I have a macbook pro, an iphone and an old touch so am not likely to buy this for a few years. Looks nice though, at £350 its fuck all too. Not surprised or impressed by it, about a year ago i said they needed to increase the size of the device as surfing on a phone is shit. Marketing (real marketing) isnt about advertising, its about predicting how people will behave in the future and meeting their needs in advance. Apple have about the best marketing department on the planet so they wont have released this if they werent pretty sure it will make money. Its no biggy though and thats reflected in the low key launch. (this is very low key for apple).
  3. I cant get my head round it either. Mind you, i was put off getting an iPhone when they came out through reading comments on forums. Some odd comments in here though. All the hype? There was nothing in the public domain until today I reckon if you are looking at buying a new mac, you are young and into music and videos, you'd look at this. The basic problem with the iPhone and the iTouch (i have both now) is the size. Now books are readable on the interface it will open up the iBook market too. Anyway, if there is a 3G netbook out there that has the media-friendly capacity of the iPad, i will eat my own shit.
  4. I'm doing 2. too, found out its a boy at the last visit, due in June. We are miles apart at the minute.
  5. Been listening to it. Amazing how demure he seems now. Seems cool as a cucumber and certain of the legality. Still hasn't said what caused him to change his mind on the legality after months of saying it wasn't legal like. The ability to lie so convincingly you deceive yourself is a pre-requisite for any role like his.
  6. Also we misread what liberal left really means in the States. All three of us for instance would be regarded as wide left by an American. And yet i'm a right wing, fascist, corporatist cunt in France. Funny old world.
  7. It supports the airline industry, which in turn employs many americans in skilled jobs, which in turn creates income, which in turn is spent on goods, which distributes aforementioned plane ticket cost into the wider economy. Seems fine to me at this level. Depends on the renumerative and cost management policies of Boeing at the end of the day... which brings us back on topic. Just cos you go to shit meetings doesnt mean we all do
  8. Nearly everyday I look at those beaches in Kerela where I can live for a pound a day. In abject poverty apparently though....
  9. Oooh, you can almost taste the jealousy. See, this is how inequality affects people. Thanks for illustrating my point.
  10. People (greed) are to blame? I've fed a cat and eaten Ice Cream and i don't think I'm greedy. The poorest people in britain live like kings compared to other places though. £8,800 per household is over £24 a day. I'm sure I read that the WHO classify povery as surviving on $1 a day or less. Of course, our wealth and 'their' suffering is to a large extent built on our subjugation of 'them' historically. Unfortunately, I can't imagine anyone winning the next election running on a platform of debt relief for poor nations, especially in the current economic climate, no matter how much Bono tries to push it up the agenda. It's in the news today that Afghanistan are getting $1.6Bn debt relief....but Haiti aren't, just another $100million loan to perpetuate the cycle of poverty. It's only demons like Hugo Chavez in Venezuela who'll give Haiti a chance... http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn/news_conten...p;lang=eng_news I've not seen it reported on the BBC yet like. The poorest in Britain live like Kings? Also to suggest that the period of economic imperialism is to blame for global poverty is blatantly wrong. Old hat Marxist clap trap.
  11. You and CT might enjoy 'Growth fetish' by Hamilton am currently reading 'The skeptical Economist' by John Aldred which was influenced by him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growth_Fetish You're tright Parky, growth targets in corporations require businesses to grow year on year, this is sustainable when demand for the products they sell is rising. When demand stops rising, the business can no longer deliver say a certain % growth. Since the corporation is owned by shareholders, the executive committees need to deliver above the market rate of interest on the shareholders investment. If the interest rate is 5%, then shareholders would get a better return if they put their money in the bank if the return on shares is less than 5%. Once the 'earnings per share' targets are not met, corporations need to merge to hoover up more demand sensitive areas of their market. Without regulation, the corporation has to get bigger because of their committments to shareholders. As the corporations get bigger, the distribution of income gets worse. See Tescos. Hamilton sums up the problem thus; "People buy things they don't need, with money they don't have, to impress people they don't like".
  12. Upload speed at the office is bizarre, never seen it so close to the download speed.
  13. Its not about poverty per se either though, its about inequality. A nice index is the Hoover Index. This estimates the total proportion of wealth that needs to be re-distributed to achieve an equal distribution. If you have 5, I have 5 and Alex has 20, the Hoover index is in simple terms 33.3%, ie. alex gives us 5 each (10 from a total of 30) and then we all have 10 each. Britain has a GDP, its national wealth, which is divided up between us through various mechanisms, the question is how fair are those mechanisms? These mechanisms are making it worse according to this report. But in what way is it making it worse....Examples? I live in an area where half a mile one way live millionaires, half a mile the other way live low paid, unemployed etc. Quite often both sides shop at the same supermarket, kids go to the same school, drink in the same bars, go to the same hospitals, have the same xbox's, big tv's etc etc on a daily basis. I think if the poor of 20 years ago saw the poor of today they would consider todays poor rich or at the least middle class. The inequality indices show that Britain's distribution of income is more unequal now than it was under Thatcher. The thing is, how will things look in another 20 years now that the poor cant get the credit to buy the x-boxes anymore?
  14. Fucked tbh. Luxury to living over there though surely. I put that bit in just for you Am I that predictable? Nah mate, you're like a bad batch of fireworks.

  19. I actually made my mind up this morning to listen to more reggae, hadnt listened to Jamrock for a couple of years and was struck by how brilliant it still is.
  20. Damien Jr Marley - Welcome to Jamrock "She said 'Junior you're a genius, you think with your mind and not your penis'" Always makes me laugh.
  21. "Yes we can" was such a thoroughly modern platform, i admired it greatly.
  22. On free now, used to have numericable which was about 25 down and 2 up.
  23. I notice you ignore my questions about why he needs to lean on his party. Thats because his party, upon whom he relies completely to affect any sort of change whatsoever, are made up of socially democratic yet fiscally conservative members. Which for me characterises the real issues facing Obama everyday. Its through this prism that i look at the leftist credentials of his policies. It may appear like i'm being an apologist but i was one of the few suggesting tempered expectations before he got elected.
