  1. Lee Bowyer's agent has played down talk the Newcastle United midfielder could join Hearts in the summer. Reports have suggested that The Magpies could look to offload the England cap to ease the burden on the club's wage bill. Hearts, who will be aiming to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group phase next season, have been linked with a bid for the 29-year-old. But Bowyer's representative David Geiss has fielded no enquiries from Tynecastle and feels the former Leeds United ace's future hinges on who Newcastle appoint as the new manager. "I don't know where that's come from," Geiss told The Scotsman about the link to Hearts. "Lee's future will depend on who goes in as manager at Newcastle and what they think of him. "I haven't heard a thing from Hearts." Meanwhile, Hearts' record signing Mirsad Beslija has been linked with a move to Reading, who will be in The Premiership for the first time next term. Beslija has cut a frustrated figure at Hearts since joining the club in January and he has made just five appearances. His agent recently told skysports.com about the winger's discontent and reports now claim that Reading want to sign the Bosnian on loan.

  12. Titus Bramble is hoping to be celebrating two new contracts at Newcastle this summer - one for him, and one for his new mentor. The much-maligned centre- half wants to round off an injury-plagued season in style today to boost his hopes of extending his Tyneside tenure. And Bramble wants Glenn Roeder - the man he credits for his impressive current form - to win his bid for the permanent United manager's job. Although his current deal does not expire until the end of next season, Bramble is keen to secure his future at St James's within the next few months. And he hails Roeder as the main influence behind his recent rock-solid performances at the heart of the defence. "I have a year left on my contract, and there have been no negotiations yet," says Bramble. "But of course I want to stay. This is a massive club and I hope talks start soon about a new deal." On Roeder, Bramble said: "He has done specialist work on the back four and you can see the benefits. He does drills with us and concentrates on the team shape. "It helps he was a centre-half. He played in that position for many years and it is beneficial for us. And overall, he has done fantastic. "He has steadied the ship and has taken us forward." Roeder is hoping that United's fellow Premiership clubs will allow him permission to take the manager's job full-time after the Premier League blocked his appointment. "It was disappointing to hear about that. But fingers crossed there are ways around that and he can take the job," added Bramble. "He has come in, done very well and I don't see why he shouldn't get the chance." And with Roeder at the helm, Bramble is convinced that Newcastle can soon join today's opponents back at the top table of European football. "A club of our size we should be trying to get into the Champions League on the final day of the season. We should be looking to get at least fourth spot." But his more immediate aims are simple. "I want an injury-free season next year," he admits. "I feel fit now and I've done well recently. I don't want the season to end."
  13. James Milner is set to turn his back on Aston Villa and return to Newcastle this summer if David O'Leary is sacked. With Villa boss O'Leary's future uncertain, the prospect of Milner making his season-long loan spell at Villa Park permanent also hangs in the balance. O'Leary insists Milner was given assurances by Villa that he could sign a four-year contract with them safe in the knowledge that he will be working with the current management team. But the youngster is so concerned by speculation that O'Leary will be sacked that he is preparing himself for moving back to Tyneside. "The only thing James has asked about is my future and how long I'm going to be here," said O'Leary, who has raised funds for a £3 million move. "His agent has also asked me the same questions so I can only assume he wants to come to Villa if I'm the manager. "It's not just me, he wants to work with Roy Aitken and Steve McGregor. Roy had him as a kid and his mum and dad have known us from Leeds. "He's wondering what would happen if he signs something like a four-year contract, and I'm only around for another year. What I told James was that I have two years left on my contract here, and I expect to see out those two years." If he is not reassured over O'Leary's fate, Milner - still only 20 - will return to Newcastle confident of a first-team future under probable manager Glenn Roeder.
  14. WIGAN supremo Dave Whelan has sent a warning letter to Tottenham and Newcastle - telling them NOT to tap up star man Pascal Chimbonda. Whelan is raging at behind-the-scenes moves to sign the Frenchman who was voted the Premiership's best right back. The outspoken Latics chairman has fired a fax to counterparts Daniel Levy and Freddy Shepherd after learning Chimbonda was wanted by Spurs and the Toon. Whelan wants between £6-8million for him and won't be dropping his price for the West Indian-born star who cost just £350,000 a year ago. However Wigan boss Paul Jewell and Whelan knows that Chimbonda has been unsettled by the talk of a bigger club coming in, with Manchester United and Liverpool also watching him. The big threat is Tottenham who have been sounding out Chimbonda's camp about a move. They would like to sneak him away cheaply but that won't happen without a fight. Whelan won't be afraid to call in the Premier League and FA if he thinks it necessary. The strong-worded letter is the first step in that process if either Tottenham or Newcastle get in Chimbonda's head and make him look to leave the JJB. Wigan are determined not to be a soft touch after making a huge first-season impact. Whelan knows he has other players who might be tempted to g o.
  15. Newcastle United hope to be able to confirm Glenn Roeder as their permanent manager by Thursday. It had been thought United would have to wait until the Premier League AGM on June 1 to gain permission from rival Premiership clubs to appoint Roeder without him obtaining the UEFA Pro Licence. But the Sunday Sun understands that the Premier League will allow clubs to approve Roeder's appointment by fax - removing the need for an official vote at the AGM. Sources claim that Newcastle have already been assured of the almost unanimous support of the 18 clubs with a vote on the issue. And with United only needing to win two-thirds support to overturn the rule preventing Roeder from becoming Graeme Souness' full-time successor, the caretaker appears home and dry. The Cockney could then be confirmed as manager before Alan Shearer's testimonial at St James's Park on Thursday night. His cause has been helped by the fact that Steve Wigley was given a year-long dispensation to manage Southampton without the Pro Licence in 2004.
