  6. NICOLAS ANELKA moved closer to a move to Newcastle United after a sulk and a row with Turkish club Fenerbahce. The French striker pulled out of his team's pre-season friendly with Everton, claiming he was injured to the surprise of the coaching staff. Anelka wants to come back to England and fancies the Newcastle move after Graeme Souness launched a bid for him that is short of Fenerbahce's valuation. The far-travelled striker has a reputation for being moody but this latest show of defiance is down to his determination to leave - and that is an encouraging sign for Newcastle. Anelka's advisers have already spoken to Fener about the fee. There is an official buy-out clause at £13m, but realistically Fenerbahce would accept much less for the striker they bought from Manchester City for £6m.
  7. Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given says he will wait until next summer before deciding on his St James' Park future. The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international has two years left on his current deal and has been linked with a move away from the Magpies. "So far they have not offered me a new deal, so we will have to see where this season takes us and I will look at it again," he told the News of the World. "But I have to say I am in no mad rush to sign a new contract at Newcastle." Given has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Arsenal this summer after several seasons as one of the Premiership's top stoppers. And after seeing Newcastle finish 14th last season Given has been disappointed by the club's lack of activity in the transfer market. He added: "We have sold six players and brought in two so anyone can do the maths and see we are short."
  8. NICOLAS ANELKA last night pleaded with his Fenerbahce bosses to let him join Newcastle - so he doesn't miss out on a move back to the Premiership. And Graeme Souness has already identified the man he will turn to if the Anelka move fails ... Mark Viduka. Anelka had a showdown with Fenerbahce chiefs to get an assurance they would accept a £6million offer for him from Souness's club. The French striker fancies the move to the Toon - who made an improved £4.75m-plus-installments bid for him last week. But the Turkish side are threatening to look for more than the magic £6m figure both sides were working on reaching as the target fee. Now Anelka wants Fenerbahce to let him go at the proper valuation - the same they paid to Manchester City - as he knows Newcastle will go for Viduka instead. Souness will change his search to Viduka in the next few days if Anelka is still out of reach. He has already sounded out Middlesbrough in the past 48 hours. Viduka could be available for around £2m and would be a decent, proven marksman to bring in. Newcastle face further frustration over Luis Boa Morte, as Fulham have rejected their £3m offer for the Portuguese flier. Fulham are holding out for £5m and will be happy to keep their man. Boa Morte wants out but has signed a deal and seems stuck.
  9. ARSENE WENGER is set to make a desperate £12million bid for Jermaine Jenas in the hope of filling the gap left by Patrick Vieira's departure. Wenger was ready to sign Seville's Julio Baptista before he was snatched from his grasp at the last minute by Real Madrid and now fears a crisis if he doesn't act quickly. So with only two weeks before the Premiership season kicks off Wenger knows he needs to buy and Jenas is the only player who he feels could fill the gap left in the heart of his team. The Arsenal boss has £13.7m to spend from the sale of Vieira to Juventus. And he may have to use all of that - and more - if he is to persuade Graeme Souness to part with Jenas. Souey was said to be holding out for over £20m last time Wenger was rumoured to have been interested in signing his young midfield star. But he knows that a cash injection is needed to bring in more players and is said to be likely to settle for anything near that figure this time around. Wenger was gutted by Real Madrid's snatching of Baptista. The Arsenal boss was going to use Baptista in an attacking midfield role with Gilberto shielding the back four. Another player who could be on his way to Highbury is Monaco striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Arsenal had a bid of £5m for him turned down this summer, but Monaco may now be ready to let him go. This follows a contractual bust-up that ended with his being sent home on the eve of Monaco's first match of the season at Nancy yesterday. Adebayor said: "Things can't go on like this. I must leave. I want respect. I have propositions from great clubs like Arsenal and Paris St. Germain. I feel they trust me. "You can't refuse a club like Arsenal. It is useless to keep an unhappy player against his will." Adebayor is a 6ft 3ins beanpole, who could give Arsenal the aerial ability they lack in opposing boxes. He has sound technique to go with it. Wenger has said he wants to make another signing this summer and needs to strengthen his midfield since the sale of Vieira. But Adebayor, a 21-year-old from Togo, would leave no dent in the Highbury pay structure. His contract, which runs till 2008, gives him just £8,000 a week at present. He could help ease the burden up front, notably if captain Thierry Henry were to suffer a more injury-hit season. Wenger has an eye for a bargain, especially in a transfer market he considers swollen by Chelsea's money. He reckons Roman Abramo-vich's cash has driven up Henry's value, saying: "Thierry scores goals that no manager can ask him to score. That is rare and expensive, no very expensive since Chelsea have come into the market."

  15. Bundesliga outfit Schalke claim their have agreed terms with Liverpool's out of favour striker Milan Baros. The Czech Republic international striker has been tipped to leave Anfield this summer and numerous clubs have been chasing his coveted signature. Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick says the club have struck a deal with the 23-year-old and will now thrash out a fee with The Reds for his services. One stumbling block behind any deal might be Liverpool's demands for Baros, but Schalke are in no hurry meet their asking price in order to push through a deal. "We've agreed things with Baros and his agent," Rangnick told SID. "He wants to come to us. "We'll make a move towards [agreeing the transfer with] Liverpool at the start of next week. "We have time and don't need to accede to Liverpool's demands straight away."
