Kieron Dyer is set to hand Newcastle boss Graeme Souness a massive boost ahead of the new Premiership season by signing a new contract next week. The former Ipswich man endured troubling times throughout the course of last season as he fell out with previous boss Sir Bobby Robson before generating infamy by brawling with team-mate Lee Bowyer on the pitch against Aston Villa. After the unsavoury incident both players' futures at St James' Park were called into question but Dyer is now set to commit himself to the club that brought him to The Premiership in 1999. The news will come as welcome relief for Souness at a time when the future of Dyer's England team-mate Jermaine Jenas remains cloudy due to his unhappiness on Tyneside. Dyer's agent Jonathan Barnett confirmed that after successfully overcoming some outstanding legal issues his client would be putting pen to paper in the coming days. "We expect to have the extended deal signed early next week," Barnett told The Mirror. "There have been no problems. "It's rubbish to think that Kieron won't be committing himself, everything is agreed on the contract and he is very happy to commit his future to Newcastle. "It has been held up for a few weeks by some legal technicalities but when I sat down with Freddy Shepherd the whole thing was agreed in an hour."

Ex-Newcastle United striker Paul Robinson may quit football after failing to earn a deal at Aberdeen. Robinson has been training with The Dons after spending last season in The Conference with York City. The 26-year-old was unable to convince Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood to offer him a contract at Pittodrie and he is now questioning his future. He has shunned the chance to join Ross County and is now believed to be on the verge of retiring from football. Robinson started his career at Darlington before joining Newcastle in 1998, for whom he made 14 appearances. The forward then moved to Wimbledon in a £1.5 million switch in 2000 but his career has since gone on a downward spiral. Spells at Blackpool and Hartlepool United were not a success and he played the past campaign at York, making his last appearance in April.

NEWCASTLE UNITED believe that Jermaine Jenas is on the verge of submitting a transfer request. While the club have maintained that the England midfield player is not for sale — placing a restrictive £20 million valuation on him — Jenas has become increasingly unsettled at St James’ Park and there is a growing recognition that a separation may best suit both parties. Arsenal and Manchester United retain a longstanding interest in the 22-year-old, but Tottenham Hotspur are the only club to have made a substantive inquiry this summer; it remains to be seen whether that interest is intact. Steve McClaren, the Middlesbrough manager, is also an admirer of the player, who joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest for £5 million in 2002. A bid of £10 million would probably be sufficient to secure his signature, which is significantly higher than Tottenham, who have just signed Edgar Davids, would wish to pay. “J.J. is a good lad and a good player,” a senior Newcastle source said, “but there has been a lot of speculation about his future and we feel he may have been affected by it.” Yet by asking to move, Jenas would forfeit any loyalty payment. In an ideal world, Newcastle would hope to push up the price for a talented young footballer who has been capped 12 times by his country. Arsène Wenger has spoken about his regard for Jenas, for whom London is apparently the preferred destination, but has not taken the matter farther. Tyneside was awash with rumours on Wednesday night that Jenas had been involved in a heated argument with Graeme Souness after being asked to play at full back in the Intertoto Cup defeat by Deportivo La Coruña should Stephen Carr have failed a fitness test, but that allegation has been denied. “This is absolute nonsense,” Souness said. While there has been no row, there is frustration that Jenas has missed matches owing to niggling injuries and Souness is confident that, in Emre Belözoglu and Scott Parker, he has signed two quality midfield players. He does not wish to lose Jenas, but would not demur if he was permitted to use the funds to bolster a depleted squad. That eventuality is proving easier said than done, however, and Newcastle’s previous optimism that Luis Boa Morte would soon be following Emre, Parker and Craig Moore to Tyneside is dissipating rapidly. The Portugal winger is keen to move north, but his present employers are adamant that only one more player will be sold this summer and Steed Malbranque is now close to joining Manchester City. Stuart Pearce, the City manager, has submitted an improved £5 million bid for Malbranque, which should be acceptable to Fulham and only the French midfield player’s personal terms would then stand in the way of a deal being completed. There are suggestions that Malbranque is not enthused about leaving London, yet Newcastle are bracing themselves for bad tidings regarding Boa Morte. “This is a big blow, ” the source said. There have been several setbacks in recent days, including the team’s failure to qualify for the Uefa Cup. Newcastle have given up trying to persuade Michael Owen to leave Real Madrid for a season, Middlesbrough will resist their neighbours’ attempts to buy Mark Viduka unless Jenas is part of the equation and progress has been sluggish on Nicolas Anelka’s proposed transfer from Fenerbahçe. If Jenas were to leave, nine senior professionals would have departed Newcastle since the end of last season, including Laurent Robert, Nicky Butt, Patrick Kluivert, Craig Bellamy and Aaron Hughes. There was one new face at the club yesterday when Francesco Coco, the 27-year-old full back, arrived at St James’ Park to discuss a one-year loan deal from Inter Milan.

Sporting Lisbon winger Rodolph Douala has confirmed Middlesbrough are trying to sign him. Boro made their move for the 27-year-old African earlier this week and the player himself has now admitted that talks are ongoing between the two clubs. The Teessiders are desperate to bolster their squad before the transfer deadline at the end of this month and Douala is now their prime target. "I know that there has been a meeting between Sporting and Middlesbrough, but I also know that Sporting still counts on me," he told Maisfutebol. "With me they [Middlesbrough] still have spoken, but know that in these things the clubs first have to come to an understanding." Douala admits that a move to Boro does appeal, although he stressed it would not be his decision to leave. "I want to make it clear that I am not asking to leave," he added. "But yes they [Middlesbrough], are interested in contracting me. "Sporting is a great club, but the English league is very desirable. "I am 27-years-old and I have to think what is good for me. I am very well here and feel good, we will have to see what happens when I speak with the club." Boro are hoping to conclude a quick deal for Douala in order to make sure other clubs, including Premiership rivals Tottenham, Fulham, Manchester City and Birmingham, do not make rival offers and complicate the situation. Boro boss Steve McClaren confirmed talks are ongoing over a couple of players, with one seemingly being Douala. "We're working on bringing in two players because we think we need to do that," he said. "The list of targets has reduced rapidly and we're running out of names and of time. "But the most important thing is not to panic and to make sure we're patient and eventually something will happen. "We want to sign the right people and when you want to go where we want to go, the list is not very long. "We're still in the enquiry stage on quite a few players, but we'll get there "We've still got nearly a month to go and we're taking our time rather than panicking and thinking we need them in for the first game of the season. "I'm never confident about specific deals until the players are set sitting here and we've signed them. A lot can happen."

Even though Taylor has been great at centre half i`m worried that Souness will play him at left back now and do what you say and play Moore in the middle. -

I think we will continue the 4-5-1 formation with Emre on the left and Milner on the right. -

Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele have come out of international retirement to play for France again. Both players have decided to return to Les Bleus after initially deciding to end their playing days for their country following their quarter final exit to eventual champions Greece at Euro 2004 in Portugal. With France three points adrift of leaders Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifying group, the availability of Real Madrid's Zidane and Chelsea's Makelele will be a massive boost to France boss Raymond Domenech. France have so far struggled in their World Cup qualifying campaign, having taken just two wins and four draws from the six matches they have played in their group. The midfield pair are sure to be involved in France's key qualifiers at home to the Faroe Islands on September 3 and the crucial away clash to Brian Kerr's Republic of Ireland side on September 7. Domenech told the French Football Federation website of his delight at having both Zidane and Makelele in his thoughts for future squad selections. "I am very happy that the French team can again count on Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele, players of great talent who are playing at the highest level with their clubs," declared Domenech. "Since I took the job, I have always said I wanted to pick the best French players available. And I said I perfectly understood that some players wanted to end their spell with the French team but that I regretted their decisions. "Today, I am particularly happy to say that, some weeks before the 2006 World Cup qualifying deciders, the players who said they wanted to quit last summer have revealed their desire to return to the France team."
