  1. I will not be watching England tonight, but I hope they win. Obviously. It will be interesting to see any u-turns in the press reaction if they play well and win. Fickle bastards. Remember, these are the same people who said Keegan was "tactically naive" then they slated Sven for being too cautious [ie tactically astute], Hoddle for being brainless and lacking responsibility, Capello for doing well in the qualifying groups but disastrously in the big tournament, and McLaren for having no charisma etc. Then wanted Harry the barrow boy almost to a man for being a motivator and lacking tactical astuteness just like Keegan and in the process put together a club team which wasn't as good as the one Keegan did. You can't win. It's a poisoned chalice. At least Woy will set himself up for life for the bashing he is going to get, and having said all of that, its still the pinnacle of an English managers career.
  2. my thoughts on Pardew have been stated on many occasions since we appointed him and are summarised in my sig. I don't really think most newspaper articles offer any information whatsover, yet the vast majority appear to be debated with gusto, as I said, particularly ones by Louise Taylor, but this one was not. It is a newspaper article like any other but the information in it is far more interesting in its perception than most. I don't get why you dismissed it in the way you did.
  3. Well, this Mihir Bose is a fuckwit to be honest. He once did an article about the mackems when they opened the SOS and while launching into the biggest load of rubbish imagineable about how "great" Bob Murray was [because he had saved the mackems etc etc......while they were giving away free tickets to fill this spanking new stadium, doing absolutely nothing on the pitch......he called him Bob Reid. Think about it. What a knacker. What I find interesting about the article is what I have explained, you know my thoughts on Pardew and his possible future. I'm also slightly taken aback that you have dismissed this article as "nothing" when put against the hundreds of others that are posted and commented on, and the reason for dismissing it as such. I think if it had had a thread of its own in the first place it may have attracted more comments.
  4. everybody makes mistakes, even Peter Shilton did, in important games too. Two spring to mind straightaway.
  5. what people say isn't always what they do. Especially when such opportunities are offered to someone. Hodgson has it for the moment, and if Pardew has a good next few years as a manager he would def be a major candidate to replace him. And if this is his eventual goal, then it is interesting to see what he says he feels to get behind him in terms of managerial experience to be better equipped to handle it.
  6. I said its interesting, and a lot more interesting than most dross that is in papers, some of which is also put on here that are poured over with gusto. I am surprised this article, both in this thread and the other, hasn't attracted a lot more interest and comment. England is another alternative for Alan Pardew that had not cropped up before, it is possible.
  7. I quite like Robinson, his career has nose dived through bad moves and playing for a struggling club but I think he is def better than Green.
  8. apologies, both you and Parky agreed with me earlier, hence the confusion
  9. Not getting the best out of Carroll wasn't Liverpool's plan, it was the managers ! As for foolishly appointing a club legend, whatever we as NUFC supporters think of Dalglish, based on what he did here to the team he took over, at Liverpool he had won cups, titles and also a title at Blackburn. Their "plan" was to back him and hope he succeeded, which is quite correct. If you want to talk about "plan" in the context of ambition, then the Liverpool ambition and expectation is clearly one that we should also want ourselves. If we finish 7th, win the League Cup and appear in the FA cup Final next season I for one will be very happy, in the short term. But it isn't good enough for them in the longer term either.
  10. Man Utd have been run by Alex Ferguson for over 25 years man, and he has stayed because he's been successful not the other way round. What about Chelsea's "plan" under AVB, how many managers have they had since Jose ? Quite simply they had expectations and gave the managers the boot for not meeting them including a World Cup Winner ? And Liverpools "plan" under Woy and Kenny ? What do you think is their "plan" now ? if anything, you should not be laughing at the likes of Liverpool because they will do exactly the same to their next manager as they want success and this is the "plan", they won't stick with someone who isn't producing just because they don't have this sort of longer term plan, the manager and short term results in the present and immediate future is everything. What happened to Randy Lerner giving O'Neill a 6 year contract because he had a "plan" ? The manager is the continuity in a football club, and its the winning that gives the stability, not the other way round. Only the managers who win games give the continuity. Sorry like, but its another example of football being different to normal high street business and I don't see what is so difficult to understand about that. It's how the game works. Fortunes fluctuate wildly in the vast majority of cases. It's unpredictable and short term and always has been and always will be, its the nature of the beast.
  11. I don't see the point of these "plans" or those who keep mentioning them to be honest. All you can do is appoint a good manager and back him. It's a short term industry, you can sink as rapidly as you rise in this game. What exactly would a DOF do other than undermine a manager ? You can't appoint a manager, then sack him for poor results if its the DOF responsible for choosing which players to buy. I think this point is pretty basic by the way.
  12. was out last night with my mate who lives in Dulwich [who doesn't know Dr Gloom, although I suspected he may have done] who hates Chelsea with a passion because he works with lots of them and says they are all gloryseekers. Anyway, we agreed that while Woy may be uninspiring, as I said a few weeks ago he has always done well with average players........... Which is what England have right now. He makes these teams hard to beat, organised and will concentrate on a rigid British 4-4-2 system which in some ways may get the best out of some of them. He might surprise us and grind out a few 1-0 wins. Expect nothing is the key and we might enjoy it more than we think. I for one will be supporting England and would not do anything else. Saying goodbye to those who don't want to play for England is the obvious good and correct start.
  13. which means what exactly ? I've never said having a DOF to choose the signing of players is a good idea. Baggio has though. I'm just curious to know what their supposed plan is, other than appoint a manager, back him and sack him if he fails to come up to their high expectations, which is pretty much how big clubs ought to be in fact. The best thing is to give them short contracts rather than stupid 6 years ones like have been dished out to managers by other clubs, such as Villa, and then had to pay them off. This is not a "plan", its just plain stupid. Liverpool will appoint a manager who they think will give them success on the pitch, back him and hope he succeeds. How else do you do it ?
  14. no doubt they will follow the same plan as always, that they followed when they appointed Woy and Kenny, and if they don't come up to expectations will be replaced too. Nowt wrong with that, in fact its spot on. Still think Martinez could be a surprise. Performing well on a shoestring is always a good sign of better things with a big club that have ambition. Other things come into play of course, as Parky said, he could fold under the pressure, but you don't know until you try.
  15. it's no different to hundreds/thousands of journalistic articles ? Edit. In fact, I think its a lot more interesting than most of the other dross you read in papers.
  16. there are plenty of "nothing" articles floating around.........
  17. OK. I didn't see it. Maybe it deserves a thread of its own ?
  18. http://www.thisislon...at-7777988.html can someone please change the title of this. Thank you. I hit a key in error which posted the topic and there doesn't seem to be a facility to edit the title.
  19. time will tell, yes, but he did a very good job at Swansea which Rodgers has carried on, they both deserve the credit for it. As a prospective manager of a big club, he plays football ie constructive passing football, this always helps the top players fulfill their ability rather than the Allardyce type of statistical based helicopter football - and yes I know that I thought Allardyce would have modified his approach when he was in a position to buy better players at Newcastle - but unfortunately as we all know now, he didn't. This approach comes naturally to Martinez. Has he spent much at wigan ? This is peanuts compared to the backing he will get from Liverpool. If managers spend money well, then get their tactics, selections, strategies and motivations right, they will succeed, and so far he has certainly not been a failure. Wigan is a vastly different proposition to a big club like Liverpool. I am only pleased, so far, that Pardew hasn't been mentioned yet, but Martinez is well worth a step up. How well he does, we will have to see but if not Liverpool then someone else may well give him a crack at the big time. I think this would be a very interesting appointment, I've thought for a while that someone would give him a chance on a bigger stage. It is most definitely no more a risk than most other appointments would be, apart from a handful of the more obvious, but even the high profile ones still carry a risk sometimes too. Look at the appointments Chelsea have made in recent years since Mourinho for starters.
  20. Martinez and Rodgers are the 2 managers behind the rise of Swansea. Martinez started it and Rodgers has carried it on. I wouldn't laugh just yet........
  21. shouldn't this thread be in the football section ?
  22. # he still loses the ball sometimes and is completely unpredictable, but he is using his body strength now better than he has ever done, in the closing minutes of games and when he has came on as a sub for the last 20 minutes or so. He definitely has performed better last season in his fleeting moments than any other time in his career. I've always thought he should have spent his career bashing central defenders all over the pitch, suddenly the message seems to have hit home.
  23. that is right IIRC, it may have been a bit of a sap to sell tickets, but this has always happened and if he had got his cap they all count.
