Anyone with a private number plate?

Oh look Thompers.... you're not the only sad twat in the world... :icon_lol:

Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton has splashed out more than £200,000 for the personalised number plate LEW 1S.

The driver was determined to get the unique registration which was already owned by property tycoon Bob Lewis.

Mr Lewis, 57, a father of two, bought it for £50,000 last year and put it on his Mercedes.

But multi-millionaire McLaren driver Hamilton, 23, was prepared to pay much more than that.

He will now put the plate on his Mercedes 4X4 in Switzerland where he lives as a tax exile.

Mr Lewis, a former pub owner and fleet car dealer, is believed to be in St Tropez with his wife.

A friend said he had been reluctant to part with the plate but the offer had been too good to refuse.

The friend said: "He loved that plate but business is business."

For Hamilton it should help to ease the pain of an uncharacteristic lapse at the Canadian grand Prix a week ago when he caused an accident with his Ferrari rival, world champion Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton shunted Raikkonen out of the race in a pit-lane collision and was given a 10-place grid penalty for the French Grand Prix in Magny-Cours.

Speaking after he was given the penalty, Hamilton said: "Obviously I am not happy but they can throw what they want at me, I will come back stronger.

"I saw the red light but it was too late. It's not a racing incident but it is unfortunate."

Surely a simple plate with TWAT would have been cheaper??

Why does he want a UK plate if he lives in Switzerland?

The only really decent private number plate I've seen was B47MAN on a black customised beetle anyway. :icon_lol:

Astra's are canny middle of the road( no pun intended) cars. Nowt special and pretty reliable, owned one once myself an 02 1.8 club. However if i was to see an Astra with a private reg my first reaction would be, bellend.

Pathetic statement. It's like saying I once had a Vauxhall Carlton and stereotyping the Lotus Carlton and putting it into the same category. Moronic.

You kind of miss the point. The fact that it's an astra, yes I'm totally aware that you can get some damn quick ones. The VXR springs to mind, very nice looking and goes like shit of a shiny. However if I was to see someone driving a VXR with a private reg I would STILL think bellend.

His statement about the Lotus Carton doesn't even have any substance seeing as Vauhall didn't build the LC...

As for driving at the speeds you're suggesting Thompers and suggesting there's "nothing wrong with it and it's safe", I really hope you suffer a blow-out. You'll soon change your mind....... if you survived it.

No, Vauxhall did build the Lotus Calton, Lotus modified it. Just like Bertoné did with the Astra to make the coupé...

Why would the type of car effect your opinion on whether or not a private plate is acceptable? Why do you perceive them to be a rich man's luxury despite them being so relatively cheap.

I had a blow out at very high motorway speeds last year. Felt it go, steering started pulling. Pulled over, spare wheel, no problem.

Because I fail to see why you feel the need to have a private reg. Yeah you can get them cheap but they are usually the piss poor ones that end up on low end cars and simply scream out "take notice of me".

but surely if they end up on low-end cars, people don't want others to 'look at me'? How do you feel about people who get their names on the back of their shirts?

What the fucks that got to do with the price of fish. Yeah it can be deemed as a predjudice but if i see a private reg on a rolls or a ferrari I wouldn't bat an eyelid, but if i see it on hot hatch I think, tit. That's my opnion mate take it or leave it. As for the shirts couldn't give a toss either way.

So what's the difference between having a £10k plate on a 200k car and having a £1k plate on a £20k car? You're the bell-end, putting an opinion across without being able to justify it.

Embarrasing is it?

'Private'.

My name is lee. My plate starts with L33. The last part is my initials and also my month of birth. The perfect plate for me in fairness.

On a sidenote, my car failed its MOT today because the lettering wasnt tall enough on my plate. Easily rectified as I have the original plate and hel pass it tomorrow but it looks very similar to a normal number plate. I wonder how all the plates I see on the road with fancy lettering pass their MOTs. Or maybe the mechanic I took it to was just a cnut!

Proving beyond all doubt that you know fuck all about cars... Vauxhall built the Vauxhall Carlton and Lotus built the Lotus Carlton in the same way that they, rather than Ford built the Lotus Cortina and they, instead of Talbot built the Lotus Sunbeam.

How you can claim you're clued up on cars and suggest Bertoné are on a par with Lotus is laughable. Bertoné like Pinafarina, etc are stylists who specialise in styling the physical appearance of a vehicle. Lotus are engineers who have take a basic chassis and completely built their own car from it.

You'll be telling me that an Escort Cosworth was created from a bog standard Escort next... :icon_lol:

Nope, he was just applying the letter of the law. The same law that now determines that a test centre has to inform the Ministry of Transport of any failures and the reason for doing so.

In short, you might want to think twice about sticking the non-standard lettering back on because if plod pulls you and doesn't like the look of your plates, a quick check through the PNC will reveal a failure due to them and therefore will deem that your MOT certificate is invalid and with it, your insurance too.

The Lotus Carlton is a bored out GSi with two turbos stuck on. the rest is cosmetic. Fool.

I'm sure you know about them than my Dad though, despite him having previously owning two of them :icon_lol:
