Actually it was a really good qualifying campaign by English standards since (I think) it was the first time we'd managed to get through with games to spare up until that point. Still felt like we made hard work of it though and WC qualifying seems easier these days with all the places available and all the minnows.

As for Holland, they must have been decent then as I remember them being shit hot a year earlier in Euro 2000.

You call getting a load of 1-0's and such against teams like wales and Azerbaijan a show of a strong side and a successful campaign? a team getting results like that is not one you crow about beating as if you've just beat some world cup contender.

There's no way at the time you were happy with results like that, you'd have been giving off about them not fulfilling potential as much as i would've if republic had got the same result.

 

(i'm not even going get into an England are better than X debate, i'm still hearing about 1966 so it's not something thats going to go anywhere same way the irish stuff won't float with me no doubt)

Not just negative, once a tournament starts they get really carried away.

That's the thing though, over there people took the piss out of England's chances in the last WC when I was there but it's mainly the press that big us up. I've never really fancied our chances since Euro '96. That said, you thought we'd win the last WC iirc

That would be like me telling you not to comment on a Newcastle thread, because they're an English team and you're not living in England. What don't I understand? I've met heaps of Celtic fans and don't like most of them... i've met a fair few real Irishmen, most of whom are nothing like Celtic fans naturally and most are good people with deece banter, and Northern Ireland gets a lot of shit due to the entire situation over there. I wasn't slagging off any "United Ireland" crap or anything, just saying I hate Celtic and I like Northern Ireland (mostly due to their fans and the aforementioned situation). Just because someone doesn't have the same opinion as you doesn't mean you have to call them embarrassing and have some sort of arrogant stance (also my comments on Neil Lennon were said with my tongue firmly in my cheek, even though I don't like the man).

If you're going to wear anything to show your displeasure then make it a Rangers shirt. You're complaining about Scottish Ireland fans yet you're an Englishman running around in a Northern Ireland top because of a dislike of Celtic? Think about it.

My Northern Ireland top is worn because I like Northern Ireland like I said earlier, and it's hardly as if I wear it all the time, it's a nice shirt and I sometimes play five a side in it. I also have an America shirt with Dempsey 8 on the back, I don't wear that due to a hatred of Mexico or anything

Besides, I don't agree with your opening paragraph, Clint Dempsey is my favourite football player and I have a lot of respect for the way the players seem to fight for their shirt in America, hence me having an America shirt. I have a Northern Ireland shirt because I like their fans, team and fact they have an impressive history despite being a small nation. Anyway, they are British, and England technically isn't a sovereign nation, so if you only care about "home country" that'd be true. I also have an England shirt, but due to disliking most of Englands players i'm not the biggest England fan on earth, of course I want England to win when they play in tournaments but it plays a second role to club football every day of the week.

 

As for your Argentina thing, I disagree too, people need to stop politicising football, if someone loves Lionel Messi et al it doesn't mean they can't show an affinity for the football they play purely based on the fact the United Kingdom (key word, not England) went to war with Argentina 20 years ago and that tensions still run high. If I like a football team based on football i'd happily wear a shirt. Similarly, I hate Italian football and would never wear an Italy shirt, but I have absolutely nothing against the Italian state.
