Both gone on to be solid, competent Premier League centre-halves and even get themselves into the England squad. If they had come here you just know they would be a disappointment or inconsistent or just plain shit. Look at the young, English centre backs we've had recently, they've all gone backwards or not lived up to initial expectations: Taylor, still a liability at times despite playing over one hundred first team games; Bramble, a byword for comedy defending and lack of concentration; Huntington, not even getting a regular game for Leeds in League One. Everton have got a fantastic coaching team behind them. Ironically a number of them jumped ship from us. Alan Irvine (now manager at Preston) came from Newcastle as did Steve Round (the only decent man in big Sam's backroom team IMO). The quality coming through the ranks speaks volumes too. Dan Gosling, Jack Rodwell, Tony Hibbert amongst them - along with of course Wayne Rooney. Moyes is pretty astute in the transfer market too - he may be a twat but Tim Cahill being signed from Millwall was a bit of a masterstroke. The answer is simple: Decent Manager/backroom staff, good academy and an owner/chairman who backs the manager both in terms of having the time building a team and financing players. His ridiculous 'air jordan' handball in the final match of the season was the nail in the coffin for Sheffield's Premier league status. Lescott has been an awesome buy for them, but to be fair Bassong has been just as immense in defense for us, and he cost much less than Lescott, plus we got him at a younger age. As for why the Everton players have flourished while Newcastle's English defenders have not, I'd say that entirely down to the lack of stability at Newcastle, and the lack of an organised decent central midfield. Obviously you watched our games and saw the genius positive tactics, clever team selections and masterful handling of substitutes from Sam "but look at his success at Bolton" Allardyce.
