Toon chief's season tickets plea

LETTERS are landing on the doormats of Newcastle United fans asking them to stick with the club.

Toon managing director Derek Llambias has sent a personal message to fans who intend to cancel their three-year discounted season ticket deals asking them to stick with the club as he once again conceded the mistakes he and owner Mike Ashley have made.

Mr Llambias insisted he understood why many supporters were weighing up whether to renew their tickets after another disappointing Premier League campaign.

But he argued their continued support is vital if the club is going to move forward.

Nevertheless, the letters also offer supporters who wish to get out of the contract they signed last summer an escape route, insisting it will be terminated as long as fans pay back the money they saved on this season’s ticket.

Mr Llambias said: “We would urge every Newcastle United supporter to stick with us because they are vital to taking the club forward in the future and putting the disappointments of the last few months behind us.

“Yes, mistakes have been made this season but the board remains fully committed to re-establishing Newcastle United as one of the leading teams in the Premier League.

“I know how much you enjoyed seeing the club challenging at the top end of the table and competing in Europe on a regular basis and we all want to see that again. It may take a little time to achieve, but your continued support will be crucial in helping us get there.

“We think this is the fairest way to do things if people do want to cancel their direct debits. We appreciate the economic climate has changed considerably for a lot of people and this is the compromise we have reached.

“All we are asking for is that supporters pay back the money they saved on this season’s ticket when they signed up for the three years and we will terminate the contract.”

Should fans not repay the money they saved last summer, the club have warned they will expect them to honour the obligations of the contract they signed and continue to pay by direct debit in accordance with the payment schedule.

Steve Wraith, who runs the fanzine Players Inc, said the club’s stance could turn out to be a public relations disaster.

“The problem the club has is that lots of fans took the three-year ticket option in the belief that Kevin Keegan would be around for that time,” he said. “The club were saying, basically, ‘come along for the ride’, watch as Keegan builds the new entertainers. But that didn’t happen.

“NUFC could find themselves on a slippery slope and in a PR mess, although I’m sure they’ve checked out the legal implications. But is the bad publicity worth it for the few fans who want to cancel their season tickets?”

Michael Ord, a committee member for the Newcastle United Supporters Club, said: “The club’s customer relations is very poor, and this is just another example.

“When fans committed to a three-season deal for a discount, things looked very much brighter than they do now.

“I think the reasons for not wanting to see through the three-year contract are two-fold. The product on the pitch is not good enough, and just like any business, if that is the case people will stop buying it.

“Secondly, fans have always lived on the hope of improvement at St James’s Park. That hope is now extinguished for many.

“The only remedy to that is for investment to be made in the team."

.................................................

guess his arse is twitching like fuck at the thought of all the money he'll be losing!

Surely the fact that they're offering a way out is a good thing?

Or alternatively they know fans will cancel direct debits regardless and this is just a way of ensuring they get their discount back.

I haven't read it but they probably have Llambias mentioning it was Dennis Wises' idea to allow fans the option to get out of it 'cause he's such a great bloke, whereas Keegan would have insisted they had to stick to the contract!

I like the way they're trying to play on people's fears by laying blame on the fans doorsteps - they're saying if you don't renew it could stop the club going forward... an easy get out and way to shift the blame if you ask me.

Just say no.

I'd love to see the club start taking fans to court for the few quid.

Is the right answer.

In any other walk of life, dis-service to the level that they've provided would result in a full refund. Their kegs are obviously filling with shite at the realisation that we more than likely are not re-investing to watch the same garbage next season.

Rather than pleading with us, how about listening and getting the fuck out?

Can you still cancel if the first direct debit payment has already been taken?

I don't think so. My first payment came out on February 10th, I can only imagine this letter only applies to people who had already cancelled.

If I received such a letter, I would print a copy; take it to the next home game; make a paper aeroplane and fly it. Woohoooo what a pretty sight that would make. Some entertainment at the match - now there's a novelty.

No it wouldnt. The price of a ticket guarantees you a seat in the stadium to watch a football match in a safe environment. Nothing more.

3 fucking years.

Cash in advance.

More of a commitment than the Direct Debiters (all due credit to them).

Can't I be refunded the next 2 years?

mine is paid and cashed too. Have to say I have no intention of asking for 2 years back, only to buy it back again ..... I just feel badly let down, but its just the same as I felt for years anyway in the 70's and 80's.

Yeah I know that - I was just expanding somewhat and comparing it perhaps to having a meal in a restaurant... :baby:

He's not man.

If I subscribed to a great full colour glossy magazine like Sight and Sound, and after 2 months they start sending me greasy old black and white clippings from Paul Ross in the NOTW I'd cancel my DD and demand restitution.

I haven't got the letter yet, if one is on the way, but it reminds me of the cunts back in 1990/91 when the share issue failed, and I got a letter asking if I would donate the money I sent off to buy shares to the club and help buy a new player or something.

Wankers.

I am right.

Just because the team is shit and get relegated doesnt mean you can claim a refund :D

If you say that none of the big 4 have a 'realistic' chance of being relegated then 'a priori' there is just less than a 1 in 5 chance of any club going down when you buy a season ticket (or 3 out of 16).

The ticket doesnt come with a quality guarantee.

I'm not talking about being relegated, or the quality of football on display.

I'm talking about being told I was making a massive saving by paying in advance and being told that was the ONLY way to secure a saving....which is now available to everyone.

The benefits they advertised in selling me a ticket no longer exist.

Plus at the time, the talk was of star player acquisitions, Keegan management aiming for the skies yadda yadda yadda.

I think if you had extremely deep pockets you could sue (OJ Simpson stylee) for being misled as to what you were buying.
