Does Relegation Matter?

I've enjoyed this season.

If we go down I'll enjoy next season.

If we stop up I'll enjoy next season.

In those terms it matters not a jot.

If we have designs on any kind of success, of course we need to be in the top-flight. But I can't see us being succesful in the next decade either way.

:good: rly?

Anyone who hasn't should question why they go to the football and consider giving it a miss for a while.....cos it ain't gonna get much better on the pitch whatever happens.

What can you hope for in your wildest dreams? To challenge Fulham and Bolton in the chase for a Europa league place?

I agree to an extent. As I said last week, I got much more enjoyment from the feeling of survival on the last day in 1991/92 than I did the following year when we demolished Leicester and were show-boating.

If we get out of this, we'll all feel a sense of euphoria despite the fact in reality, we've been utterly shit. And if you don't get that feeling, your commitment is questionable.

When this whole sorry episode broke with Ashley back in September, I questioned whether I had enough love for the club to carry on giving my support. Did it represent what I truly believed in any more or had he ripped the heart out of it and moved it away from me.

The last two games have confirmed my committment to the cause. The feeling of euphoria last Monday was immense - likewise, the heart-wrenching feeling when we lost on Saturday. It took me back 17 years. This is still my club and will still be my club after these players retire and after Mike Ashley moves on.

Seems a reasonable philosophy HF. I think I hit rock bottom before most people on here and that was the day Souness was appointed, which has helped get things in perspective in retrospect (except the odd rant). Que sera sera and all that. Mind, I won't be feeling that on Sunday.

Aye. You had it spot on about the Boro game. I enjoyed that as much as the 5-0 against Man U. Probably more.

Yours was the first post I had read where anyone had mentioned enjoying the season. The performance on the pitch was shit. The soap opera that is Ashley and everything that happened off the pitch this season has been shit.

I will tell you my wildest dreams when it comes to NUFC and it may seem like a complete and total fantasy... but I dream of stability.

An owner who knows what he is doing.

A manager who knows what he is doing and is given the time to do his job.

A team who plays with a bit of heart and a bit of style.

I guess I am going to have to give football a miss for a while since I won't be seeing too much of the team I support on the television for some time and the thought of "supporting" some other team is a concept that is totally foreign to me.

Definitely more because the net result was so much more valuable. The 5-0 gave us bragging rights - not even that actually, it was no more than revenge for losing the league and the thumping in the charity shield. No more than a battle won in a war dominated by Man Utd though.

The win Monday night could mean our very Premiership survival - a million times more valuable.

The Boro game was by far the best game I have "experienced" for some time. Me and the three ex pat geordies I watch with had completely driven every other person out of that pub because of the amount of noise we were making and the elation felt at the final whistle was incredible!

I'm not having a go or trying to bring back old discussions but it's obvious you are missing the craic which comes from actually attending football matches and/or, dare I say it, the feeling of actually being part of the city.

If I had watched this year on the telly I'd have switched off in January tbh.

I think that it will only matter if it means a change of ownership. Unless there is wholesale restructurinig, then no, relegation will just perpetuate the misery. The only hope is that it scares the Fat Man off.

The odd game aside, I haven't enjoyed this season at all. Whilst still wanting to give Ashley the benefit of the doubt, I was increasingly worried as the summer wore on and the end of the window confirmed my worst fears about this regime. Since then it's been garbage on the pitch and a shambles off it. A season from hell.

I don't see that as a reason to question why I go at all. I'm not going to stop supporting them because we're going through a shit period but at the same time I'm not going to pretend it's been something it hasn't. It's been fucking shit in every respect. But your allegiance to your local football club can be something that runs so deep that not going is simply not an option.

This club was dragged up from the brink of extinction a couple of decades ago; witnessing it being sent headlong back towards the place it was rescued from has been horrible.

Aye, especially the last bit. Grim as fuck. Not to say I don't enjoy the craic or whatever, same as you I'd guess.

Typical fucking Newcastle though that a euphoric experience like that was just another false dawn :good:

I was resigned to relegation until that performance. Then I thought we'd get at least a point from Fulham.

Me too. Kick in the stotts. It's like KK coming back then being shat on was worse than mid-table mediocrity under Allardyce, Souness or whoever. The glimmer of hope makes it worse.

I've seen this season as a good horror.

More succesful seasons would be great comedies....or porn.

Even getting humped, I enjoy the game. I enjoy giving them shit one second and singing their praises the next. Every match is still the one where we're going to turn it all around. I still do that childish thing where you pray for 3 goals in stoppage time as if it can happen. I enjoy singing "we're gonna win 5-4" when Liverpool are 4-1 up. Worse comes to the worse i enjoy making paper aeroplanes and seeing if I can reach the other stand.

The only real positive I can see about stopping up is attracting a buyer - this assumes ongoing fuckwittery by Ashley.

If/when we do get owners with a clue then theres no reason why good management can't take us pretty far - see Hodgson or Moyes - so I don't think huge investment is a necessity.

Aye I'm not suggesting I come out feeling suicidal or owt, just temporarily sick as a cunt fairly frequently. Pubs and craic exist to make these feelings go away though, and drinking beer always makes me happy. Thank absolute fuck for beer :good:

Renton had it spot on. We sacked Robson and replaced him with Souness and that day was devastating for me. Look what happened. We sacked Robson for finishing 5th and having our usual poor start. We'd kill for fifth now.

Relegation absolutely matters. Staying up gives us hope that maybe we can get it sorted. Of course there's always the possibility that this will be the yearly occurance for a few years until we actually go down.

Going down could set the club back years. With the way money rules football, it's hard enough to turn a team around to the point they can challenge for anything without spending time in the second tier.

Of course, if we go down I'll put the usual positive spin on it to make me feel better, but I'll be devastated.

We'd kill for fifth from bottom to be fair.

I'm all but resigned to relegation now.

Biggest task to face the club will be returning to the premiership and I dread to see how long this will take us.... especially if Ashley doesn't fuck off soon

I think the club has already been set back years so much so that I'm not sure whether relegation will set us that much further back. Which I guess was my actual point in starting this thread.

If we had gone down under Souness I would have felt that it had set us back immeasurably but now I just feel we are pretty much there already and under Ashley we will continue that way whether or not we are in the top flight.

Obviously I want us to stay up, I just fear that we are in for misery either way unless we are sold.

I am fully aware that I would never get the whole experience by being a fan in a foreign country... I could never feel like I am a part of the city. I have attended a game in the past... it was just the Intertoto match against Lillestrom in the summer of 06. The stadium wasn't full by any stretch of the imagination but even that cemented what I already felt about the club. My time in Newcastle and the match was great! I am also a supporter of teams in the US and have had a ST to some of them where I would go to matches even they were crap, being there is a large part of the experience. I agree completely with what you are saying, in other words.

I look at teams like Villa and Everton(specifically Everton), and think if we stay up(by some miracle). Keep Shearer in charge for a few seasons and slowly improve, there's no way we can have as shit a season as we just have. The off the field stuff has been absurd. I know Ashley is a cock, but slow steady management(without massive spending) has slowly moved Everton up the table. I think he only spent big on Feilliani and Yakubu.

West Ham looked in worse shape than us at the start of the season(ditto Spurs) but they made 1 appointment(that wasn't Joe f'n Kinnear) and have steadied themselves. The rest of the league is terrible, if the likes of WH, Spurs, Fulham, Stoke can be top half of the table(roughly), it speaks volumes about the league.

Relegation will be a disaster, yes we need new investors but do you think that they will buy a club that is looking forward to Championship opposition and crowds/income?

We will go down I fear and I believe the club is so badly run and has been for the past 5 or 6 years that it will take quite some time to get it back into the premiership.

We have had a 14th, 12th and 13th finish in the last 4 seasons OK we would kill for that right now but doesn't that tell you that the rot set in a few years back!

I thought we would be in this position last season and the season before that infact since Shearer retired and we had the likes of Ameobi up front and not one creative soul in the midfield.

Does it really matter? Ask the same question this time next year when we finish mid-table in the championship.

We meet for all of the games. The comaraderie makes it enjoyable. It isn't being at a match but if we are watching the Sunderland match and there are mackem ex-pats in the pub there is quite a bit of banter. I guess you could say that is as close as I will be able to get (in the forseeable future) to actually being at a match...
