No threat to him though are they... now if the opposition had been Chelsea or Liverpool with exactly the same turn of events I think we'd see a different side to Sir Alex.

Wasn't he really humble when Southend knocked them out of the Carling Cup a couple of years back?

Only downside for me is that it was Carrick rather than Owen who missed the pen. Capello was there to see him do fuck all as well. Meanwhile, Defoe bagged a hattrick. Karma tbh.

owen's bum chums on the beeb were going on about how soon it'll be before he gets his first goal for utd. defoes on fire. i know which of these 2 i'd take to the world cup ( if we get there).

I said when he went I thought he'd be a good bit-part/squad player for them and I still think he will be that (but nothing more). He doesn't do enough for Capello to pick him and it's difficult to argue with that judgement. He could get about 15 PL goals if he gets his confidence back a bit but that won't be enough to go to South Africa.

Owen has a sharp footballing brain and used to have pace with it. That's why he bagged so many goals for Liverpool, he was miles ahead of the defenders before they'd even thought about it.

Now he's lost the pace as a result of the injuries they keep up and he's no longer one step ahead.

It's a similar thing to Shearer - never quite as prolific after the injuries, but what he lost in pace, he more than made up for in strength. Compare the Shearer who finished his career with us to the skinny kid who'd fall over in the breeze who turned out for Southampton. Shearer adapted his game to suit, Owen hasn't..... yet!

IMO his future may well be playing behind a front two and turning provider in much the same way Pedro did.

Shearer was always physical though Craig. He might have looked skinny at Southampton but he was just a young lad and he was still very strong and powerful (having what fitness experts refer to as a high power to weight ratio). He obviously got stronger as he got older and placed more emphasis on his strength after injuries robbed him of his pace (he was pacy if not lightning quick prior to that). Owen is a different kettle of fish because although he could beef up in the gym till the cows come home he's never going to be able to bully defenders. His game is about sharpness (of mind and formerly of body) so it's more difficult for him to adapt. Also, he's not really a Pedro type of player either as he just doesn't have that killer pass in his locker. I still think he's got stuff to offer as Man Utd will create plenty chances against the poorer sides but he'll not score against the rest of the 'big four' or Champions League sides very often.

I know he's not a Pedro type player and I think you've explained better about the beefing up than I was doing.. Just trying to find what level Owen can play at nowadays. It's certainly not what he used to be.

You're right about not having the killer pass but he does have the sharp mind and with that, i wouldn't be surprised to see Ferguson trying him in midfield at some point.

Yeah, I think I know what you were saying. When he played in the 3 under KK he looked good playing deeper as his movement was still good and he was harder to pick up from there, making late runs etc. Play him further up the field and the centre-half finds it way too easy to mark him out of the game due to that lack of pace. Thing is like, I don't think he's good enough to play there for Man Utd.

The commentator said last night before the pen was taken that he wasn't sure why it was carrick and not owen

thing is I wouldn't call owen a good pen taker, he took them for us and he was no specialist didn't find the corners or blast them in particularly well

Aye, Owen's finishing has always been a considered placement, not great power in the shot. I mean sure, if you can consistently put it top bag you'll be fine. If I had to choose between Owen and Scholes I know who i'd choose every time.

I forget if Scholes was still on the pitch, but he's technically excellent and has some power to his shot too.

I remember Beardsley retelling a story of how he, Fowler, Scholes and someone else (may have been Shearer) were asked to hit the bar from 18 yards and Scholes absolutely dominated the rest of them. Makes you wonder; everyone in England knows how good he is, but does he get the same attention from abroad that the likes of Pirlo does from English fans?

He'll do very well to get as many as 15. First of all he's unlikely to start many games (even more so after Burnley). Second he will get injured at some point and third now his pace has gone, he's really not very good anymore.

As for Ferguson, he'd look a bit of an idiot if he blamed anyone else for losing, given he made a loada changes and Carrick missed a penalty!
