Well that's implying that people buy a record purely to influence it's chart position, I doubt that's the case. People actually listen to these records.

Mind, if there's one "genre" that I bet gets bought, listened to once or twice then quickly forgotten about, it's the Reality Music Show Winner's Single. Even most middle-aged housewives prefer their Westlife albums in the long run. ;)

Meanwhile, a decent enough summary, I think: http://www.wherediditallgoright.com/BLOG/2.../ratm4xmas.html

ha ha, very good. love this bit............. class!!

"2. Some on Twitter seem to think that buying one single and not another one will topple "capitalist consumerism." Nothing needs to be added to that."

:o

The greatest irony is that Rage Against The Machine are on Sony Records.

...the same label Cowell works for and all of his acts are signed to.

:(

EDIT: As I didn't realise was already pointred out in Collings post. ;)

Regardless, at least RATM stand for something

Childish, completely unworkable, socialist values? Because I don't think they're particularly original.

Regardless, at least RATM stand for something and are not manufactured. It would be nice to see Cowell not get his own way at xmas for once

Simon probably got one of his people to start the campaign man.

"Oh, you know what Simon's doing, he's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market, he's very smart."

Well as Malcolm X said

“If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.”

I dont think they honestly believe they will change the world. But getting just one more person to think about how they are living makes it worthwhile.

I stand for not giving Sony Time Warner more money for a track I've already paid them for once.

I might buy the X-factor song though, if I like it. that Joe's got a helluva voice.

I suppose it'll show that the music industry isn't just about regurgiating old ideas if a 17 year old song becomes the Xmas no. 1.

It'll be a great moment like.

This heavily promoted publicity stunt has shown what the public really thinks of heavily promoted publicity stunts.

RATM supposed to be in the lead at the mo.

Come on!

Physical CD of the X Factor song isn't out yet though. As soon as housewives can shovel five copies into their trolley at the Tesco checkout, it's game over for the ol' packaged teen rebellion shebang.

I'm still gonna buy it tho.

Ratm i mean

just cos i dont like Simon Cowell, the TWELVE FUCKING WEEKS of X factor on the telly or the really crap kareoke singer that won. and i really dont mind spending 79p to have a chance (a very good chance) to keep this crap off the top of the charts.

so sue me..............

oh, and also i really like the song!

I bought it too, largely because I had a quid in my Amazon mp3 account, it only costs 29p there and I was spending 69p on a friend's new single at the same time, thereby helping to encourage ultra-indie grassroots music. Or something. I still feel a little unclean though.

Why are you helping to double the record sales of the company he works for then?

the TWELVE FUCKING WEEKS of X factor on the telly or the really crap kareoke singer that won.

You think a chart war where the public battle to buy up as many records as possible and both acts on the same label benefit from inflated sales is going to make Simon Cowell think again before starting another series....and in all liklihood generating a similar battle?

See, that's the thing. I bought it because, after much consideration, I decided it's just a bit of a giggle. Like the Christmas number one should be. I'd rather it'd been, I dunno, the JCB Song or "Mad World" or Gordon Haskell or one of the other interlopers we've had in previous festive seasons, but anything that gets Simon Cowell riled enough to put on his lemon-sucking face and complain about how "unfair" it is that the X Factor isn't being allowed to steamroller its way to Christmas number one must have some merit to it. Even if it does just boil down to "fuck you I'll put money in your pockets whichever way I want to".
