NEWCASTLE UNITED are understood to have made a bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder James Perch.

The Chronicle understands that the 24-year-old could be Chris Hughton's first cash signing in charge of United after a torrid time in the January window.

Perch won promotion with Forest under the guidance of Colin Calderwood with the Toon number two a big admirer of the player.

Perch, has been club captain during his time with the Trees, has recently made a comeback from a stress fracture of the shin that has kept him out of action at the City Ground.

And he has appeared in the last four games as Billy Davies' side have emerged as genuine title contenders behind United in the Championship.

However, it remains to be seen whether the move for Perch has been successful with United guarded over their transfer movement this month.

I know bugger all about him to be honest, but if he is good enough and different to what we have (ie has pace and can pass a football!) it'd be a good singing as it has the added bonus of weakening Forest in their challenge for promotion.

But like i say, he could be crap for all i know!

Where does this wonderkid play?

quick search says he’s a defensive midfielder mainly, but can play right back or centre half, even in goal.

It's like four new signings.

Don't joke, Ashley/Llambias would actually use that as a serious quote if we signed him!

Don't let the fat man see that idea ;)

NUFC Statement -

"NUFC has recently completed a signing which will fill 4 positions, we see this as a way forward and we see this as a smart bargain, we would like to tell you we have stopped our pursue of Danny Simpson as we feel we have covered that position"

Wouldn't even have to sign him:

"Club reveal January Perch Chase".

Don't worry people, you won't be missing out on too much if you don't get him. Although now Taylor is out you may up your bid?

Perch's good attributes - Very Fast, fit, hard working, versatile (can play anywhere apart from striker or winger), loyal, hard tackler and never hides in a game.

Bad points - struggles to pass the ball 5 yeards sometimes, has no long passing ability has no long shooting abilty. Just generaly gives it away a fair amount. He is also plaugued by the perenial "utility man" role, which is why he's not in our team right now.

Im not sure where he would fit in at your place. He'd do the same job he does here I guess which is be a valuble squad member.

Do you need a fast, hard working DM? Or a RB?

I think if you offered £1m-£2m you'd get him.

Oh and here's to hoping we both go up. WBA have had enough chances at the Prem. Newcastle should be there anyway and its about time we had another crack!

Sure I've read it elsewhere that we offered somewhat in the region of a million but Hillbilly Davies rejected it.
