May Day on the move...

May Day bank holiday plans unveiled

Plans to scrap the May Day bank holiday in favour of either a St George's Day in April or Trafalgar Day in October have been outlined by the government.

Ministers argue the former strategy would start the tourist season earlier, while the latter would elongate it.

The Trades Union Congress rejected a May Day change, saying firms have built schedules around established holidays.

Meanwhile, widely discussed plans to bring UK clocks into line with Europe's were not included in the strategy.

Tourism Minister John Penrose said it had been "in, then out" twice from the final published document.

The idea behind "double summer time" is to have clocks an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in the winter and a further hour in the summer, to match Central European Time, which would mean lighter nights but darker mornings.

But people in Scotland have opposed the move, saying some of the northern-most areas would not see daylight until 1000 GMT during winter - increasing accidents.

The government's policy paper includes proposals to move the May Day holiday to St George's Day on 23 April in England and St David's Day on 1 March in Wales - to create a "national day".

A move to October could be either a "UK day" or a national day to mark military victories such as the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Mr Penrose said he wanted to encourage more Britons to holiday at home and at the same time to get more foreign residents to visit the UK.

"As a nation we are a little bit prone to underplay what we have on our doorstep," he said.

He said the strategy also aimed to exploit the economic opportunities presented by next year's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.

It is hoped an extra four million people will visit Britain over the next four years, spending an extra £2bn and creating 50,000 jobs.

Consultation will now begin on any possible changes to the UK's tourism strategy, but no change is expected until 2013.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "There is strong support for an extra public holiday as the UK has the stingiest allocation in Europe.

"But messing around with established bank holidays will disrupt people's schedules and create more red tape for employers."

He argued moving the May Day holiday forward was not about bringing forward the tourist season, which he said started around Easter anyway.

Instead, he said, it was "all about satisfying Tory backwoodsmen who have a bee in their bonnet because of May Day's association with international labour day".

May Day was a traditional British celebration dating back to the 4th Century, he added.

Whilst I've always been behind the idea of a bank holiday on St George's Day, Trafalgar Day seems more to make more sense. Will split the bank hols up more evenly through the year and represents an important date in history whereas 23rd April is only an accepted date.

Take a holiday from the start of May and put it in an even colder part of the year. Genius. Daft that we don't have one from the end of May until the end of August as it is.

Some of us prefer the colder months!

A minority though, at a guess. And that's where most of the bank holidays already are. So fuck you!

Isn't that because everyone's skiving off on their summer holidays anyway.

Here in the land of bank holidays we get:

New Years day and Australia (Invasion) Day in January

Easter

ANZAC Day in April

Queens Birthday in June

Labour Day in October

Christmas/Boxing Day

If you work in a bank, you get a Bank Holiday during the year and if you live in regional Australia or Melbourne (almost one in the same) you get Show Day.

No wonder our national saying is, "she'll be right mate".

Yeah I know! what I mean is I'd rather lose a bank holiday from May and enjoy it more in the cooler weather in October. I don't like the heat. So FUCK YOU again!!!!!!

Aye, we should have one in late June or July, I couldn't give a shit what the excuse is.

Incidentally, does everyone know that you can get 11 consecutive days off over the Easter period with judicious use of only 3 days of your annual leave? Something to do with that baldy prince twat marrying his stalker.

we should also fix the two Easter holidays and the religious can take off whatever time they want at their own expense on the actual days if its so important

i like the ideal of double summer time. fuck the jocks. if they want to stay on gmt/bst let them. doesn't mean we have to

It would be shit for Newcastle too (which is much nearer Scotland than London) so fuck you, how would you like it to be dark until 11 am? Anyway, it's been tried before and failed. Don't fix what isn't broken.

As that famous Queensland politician once said, "Daylight saving just makes your curtains fade quicker." :D

Most people would be at work and wouldn't really notice though, except the weekends of course and I generally sleep until 12.00 so fuck all of you. :D

what's the point in it being light in the morning when you're stuck in the office anyway? i'd rather enjoy longer summer evenings in the sunshine

Fucking Tory bastards trying to set rid of a socialist tradition is my take on it.

(I know Thatcher pretty much succeeded in her target to kill it (in the UK at least) but still)

I would also resist the time change - being on the Meridian is somthing that appeals to my twisted definition of patriotism.
