Solar roof panels

Any property owners out there considered these?

You basically either spend £12,000, get so much free electricity and the get paid £600 ish a year off the government

Or

A company will install them for free (they basically rent your roof for 20 years), you get the free electricity, saving you 35-50% off your yearly bill and the company trouser any payments off the government.

I think the company who specialise in the Borth East is called a shade greener.

Does JawD not have them? I'd definitely look into it if I had the initial outlay.

Yeah I do. Because I had mine fit before the gov changed the feed in tarrif I get 45p / kWh I produce. In real terms Im getting about £600 a Qtr back in my bank direct from EOn. But now the rate has halved so you done get as much back. How much you get back depends on how many panels you have (how much you can harvest) and the direction it faces. There are numerous companies doing it. Its not as good a deal as it was imo though and it up to you to decide if you think the pay back period is worth the outlay.

What about when you get them free? Is the electricity saving good.

They look a bit shit on the roof of a house tbh.

Yeah because normal house tiles really have a certain style and eloquence to them  fuck me it's just a roof.

I think my elec went down 20% but gas went up somehow. I think because of long winter and our heating is gas

Don't bother getting them for nout. It's a minefield if you move on within the 20 years and your savings are only useful during the day when generally no one is in to use the free juice.

They are still a good deal even with the reduced FITs as the panels cost fuck all now. Should be able to get a decent 4Kw system for 6 grand.

It's obviously a personal thing but I value the appearance of my house over whatever it'll save me in electric bills.

Each to their own I guess. Mind I'm a bloke who has an air con unit bolted to the side of his house as well and they won't win any prizes for appearance either

A number of councils are doing schemes to install efficient energy. Some solar and some air to water heat pumps. It makes sense as for council owned property the payback is worth it. I assume the council get a FIT and the occupant reduced energy bills. No FIT for the air to water (yet) but they cut bills massively especially in areas using oil for heating.

Is it really a minefield? They wouldn't put me off buying a house and the lease is attached to the property not the person.

@@Christmas Tree If you can tell me the direction, size and angular inclination of your roof I can tell you approximately what you would earn.

Nah,

It's south facing though which is a decent start.

I certainly wouldn't / couldn't pay for them but if the savings were really good I have them for free, particularly as Labour are going to send electricity prices soaring.

Not at all, but as red Ed has announced what his intentions are, you can be sure the electric companies are going to up their prices to fuck over the next two years, just in case.
