I've heard this one before but slightly differently asked actually. If it's the one I'm thinking of they don't (and never have had) a 'proper' football team. Doubt you'd know it was a city unless you came from there either. My Great Auntie Whinnie lived there. Admittedly the last clue isn't of much use.

According to wiki, Wakefield has a larger population depening on whether you just count the urban area or the district.  Similar to Newcastle which has a population of either 293k, 880k or 1.65m depending on what you include.
