Appreciate you've played to a much higher level but what's your view on punching? When I was playing, the GK coach's mantra was collect the ball at all costs - "you punch the ball, I'll punch you until you don't do it!" was muttered on a regular basis.

It was the same for me at Saturday/Sunday league teams. Once I got to academies they told you to do it more.

The thinking was if you can punch a cross 30 yards away, the “danger” (ball) was 30 yards away from your goal. If you drop one cross the danger is in your 6 yard box.

I imagine that was the thinking for Pope at the weekend, after our analysts had done their work on Brentford. Something like they long throw and score from corners but the actual goals come from mistakes defending the initial ball in, rather than second balls 30 yards away.

No, but that's not where this particular gazelle runs.

Ah a gazelle, near the bottom of the food chain, ranked just above grass. Seems about right.

We can't seem to defend either at the moment. :(

Aye, that's the level I'm on about. He referred to it as 'the continental disease' and 'had no place in the English game'.
