South Tyneside and Sunderland

OK culturally and aesthetically more similar to Sunderland than Newcastle.

We might have a toned down accent compared with Newcastle but it's unmistakably Tyneside rather than Wearside.

Explain what you mean.

Again if you're talking about asthetics then explain how North Tyneside is similar or different and to where.

Proper geordies from North Tyneside, and they have a lot of nice area's too. The houses in Tynemouth and Whitley Bay are in another league to South Tyneside. Take a walk from Monkseaton Metro to the sea front one day and you will see what I mean. I've worked with a lot of "pea-ple" from South Tyneside and the odd mackem word always drops in in conversation "bewk" etc... in a St-ea-ve Cram celebrity fan sort of wayah.

Ever been to Cleadon or Whitburn? Or Westoe Village?

I lived in South Shields for 32 years and never heard a single person ever, ever say "bewk" or the others. I suggest you are a fucking lying idiot.

My point was nothing to do with Newcastle though it was about South Tyneside and the scruffs that live between the Tyne and the Wear.

Your point was about the three boroughs South of the river as opposed to the two North. Ignoring the fact that North Tyneside is the 69th most deprived in the country (out of 354). If I was in the poorest 20% of people I'd not be inclined to call anyone else a scruff.

It's similar to the Liverpool slums thing, for me. I find it embarrassing. Mainly because if the deprivation in our own part of the world.

Further to the 'What the fuck?' discussion on the other board:

Does any of the Gay lads on here have a preferable town or city for when oot on the tap?

London, simple as. Safety/variety in numbers.

The Manchester scene has a good press, but the place has always been full of nutters when I've been there.

Indeed.

Previously I could only find the North Tyneside rank, but a bit of digging and it seems Stevie lives in the most deprived borough of Tyne and Wear....

Aye but if you notice the biggest cities in the country are in the top 20, because regional capitals like Newcastle upon Tyne will attract everything. It's where la creme de la creme live, and it's also where tramps and the like live too, we can't have it all ways and this survey doesn't take everything in to account. My point was about South Tyneside overall being trampy, nothing else.

The point of that survey is to take everything into account. Employment rate, income scale, extent of deprivation and concentration.

The majority of the map you posted above is purple or blue, then green, then yellow. The smallest parts of the map represent the red, the lowest 10%. Compare that to the Newcastle one....

There's a lot of white. But I'd say there's more blue than there is green/yellow. That's more people in the poorest or richest 20% than in the middle 20-70% range. You're either a scruff or a toff in Newcastle.

South Tyneside has mostly toffs, then a lot of people on middle incomes then relatively few in poverty.

Must admit I'm surprised to see quite so much of areas like Fawdon, say, falling into the bottom 10-20%. I suppose aspects like income will always be skewed against the north-east (or are they weighted for cost of living?).

Leeds, Sheffield and Bristol are bigger than Newcastle and aren't on the list tbh. Edited by TheInspiration

The fact the survey has Newcastle as being more deprived than Sunderland shows the credibility of it as well.

Newcastle has got better than Sunderland in the last 3 years, only just....

Still the second most deprived of the five boroughs though.

People would cry racism if they were. The whole survey is a joke as I've mentioned.

You want to tell the national office of statistics to sack all their actuaries then, and send you and your mate to ASDA's around the nation where you can judge regional poverty on the density of the single mums' eyebrow hair and reward government subsidies on that basis.

In general I'd say most NE areas are pretty similar - Newcastle might have some posh areas (as has ST to a smaller scale) but it also has a shit load of rough areas and the roughest of all - exactly where I started replying in this thread.

When I go back to Shields I'll be the first to admit it isn't "nice" and there are problems - however I'd argue on the whole that that isn't down to the people which is what Stevie was getting at. For years ST had the highest mainland unemployement in the UK due to its concentration on a few industries which were destroyed - the fact that they weren't replaced isn't due to how pure blood the people are - its down to regional and national politics.

Newcastle has some of the most deprived wards in the country as well. Walker also has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates iirc.

You could argue that's to do with how attractive Newcastle teenagers are though.

Does being attractive stop you using contraceptives like?

The Mackems are wrong because they forget the biggest achivement of regional politics ever - the Nissan factory - ST has had nothing compared to the investment in Newcastle, Sunderland and even North Tyneside (Siemens).
