  1. Arsenal v Newcastle Emirates Stadium Saturday, 18 November Kick-off: 1500 GMT Arsenal are set to be without Gilberto as he has returned to Brazil to deal with a family matter. Freddie Ljungberg and Julio Baptista are both fit again, while goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has recovered from his heavy cold. Newcastle duo Shay Given and Obafemi Martins could return after injury. Emre is suspended, Shola Ameobi could play before he has a hip operation, while Stephen Carr, Titus Bramble and James Milner could be available.
  2. Dyer, Martins and Given all start. Sounds like a 4-5-1 today.
  3. If Ameobi plays today, Roeder should be shot.

  9. From today's independent Newcastle wait on Belgravia to announce £235m bid By Damian Spellman Published: 18 November 2006 Newcastle United were still awaiting a formal takeover bid yesterday amid claims that the Belgravia Group is ready to make its move. The Jersey-based investment group is reportedly preparing a £235m bid which would involve a lucrative property deal and up to 7,000 jobs. It is understood that no offer is imminent, although the chances are increasing. The Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has repeatedly insisted he has received no formal offer and challenged potential investors to make their move. Both Belgravia and the United States hedge fund Polygon have expressed an interest, and the former chairman Sir John Hall has confirmed he has held talks over his holding, which amounts to around 29 per cent with his son Douglas controlling another 12 per cent. Shepherd, however, owns further 28 per cent and has shown few signs of being ready to relinquish his interest. There have been suggestions that Shepherd could launch his own takeover after gradually increasing his stake to take him close to the 30 per cent threshold at which he would have to make an offer to the remaining shareholders. Should Belgravia make a move, Shepherd and the Halls would stand to make sizeable fortunes from selling out, although the headline figure could be misleading. If the total value of the project did amount to £235m, it is understood while that would mean a sizeable dividend for shareholders, it would also include the budget for whatever investment the new owners saw necessary in order to revive the club's fortunes. The recent speculation, coupled with a £1m investment in shares by the Isle of Man-based equity fund Northcote (IOM) Ltd-Kapena Fund, has strengthened the club's share price, which stood at 70p earlier yesterday, valuing Newcastle at significantly more than £93m. Northcote bought 1,475,000 shares at 72.8p, costing a total of £1,073,800, but insisted that its purchase was not part of a takeover bid. 12. Michael Owen has told Sky Sports News he has not given up hope of returning from his serious knee injury during the current campaign. The England striker is currently sidelined after rupturing his cruciate ligament during England's 2-2 draw with Sweden at the World Cup finals. Owen's injury was expected to keep him out for the entire season, but after undergoing surgery with famed knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman the Magpies hot-shot is in a positive frame of mind. The turn of the year will be crucial for his comeback schedule, with a scan planned to assess the rate of his recovery, but after making just 10 appearances for The Magpies since his move from Real Madrid, the former Liverpool star says he has not given up hope of adding to that tally before the end of May. "You don't want to create a false belief so when I first had it done I thought you might as well write the season off and everyone else did as well but the operation was great," Owen said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News. "The surgeon was happy with what he saw inside my knee and sees no reason, along as I have a good rehabilitation, to think there will be any future damage. "I would love to play again this season. "How long I play and if I play - and that is the big question - until I step up my programme it is impossible to tell. "Certainly you have got to have a target when you are down in the gym every day and my target is certainly to play again this season." Explaining the processes involved in his rehabilitation, Owen stated he can begin to accelerate his comeback if a scan at the end of the year yields positive results. "I'm still in there [the gym], and I shall be for quite a while yet obviously," Owen added. "I'm rowing, I'm on the bike, I'm walking on an incline on the treadmill and I'm swimming so that is probably the case for another four weeks then we will start picking things up gradually. "I've got to have a scan as well, that's in December or early January, and as long as they say the bone is knitting together with the graft then we can push on. "Round the turn of the year will be the important bit and then it will be all systems go for a return." In Owen's absence Glenn Roeder's side have been struggling in the league and currently find themselves in the relegation zone having taken nine points from their first 12 games. A tricky trip to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium awaits on Saturday, but Owen is hopeful his team-mates can turn the club's poor start to the season around. "We have done particularly well in the cup competitions but not so well in the league, and Arsenal away is always going to be a tough game. "They played really well against Liverpool the other day. "It is always a top place to go and we have got a couple of really important games coming up. "We have got Watford coming up, and Portsmouth at home and we need to pick up points in the league really. "Hopefully we can progress in the cups because this place would take off if we won some silverware, but I think we need to pick up a couple of good results in the league to take the pressure off."

  17. Obi told: Get out of Toon quick By GARY PAYNE November 15, 2006 OBAFEMI MARTINS has been told to quit Newcastle — before it is too late. Nigerian FA chief Waidi Akanni reckons the £10million hitman made a mistake joining Toon from Inter Milan last summer. He insists Martins, who could return from a hamstring injury at Arsenal on Saturday, should jump ship before Glenn Roeder’s side get relegated. Akanni said: “Martins should have moved to a winning team in the Premiership — not a struggling side like Newcastle. If something is not done urgently, his career might suffer.” Martins, 22, has been plagued by injuries since his move and has scored only once in 10 games. Akanni added: “Martins has not been playing well, everybody can see that. “The Premiership is a tough league and for a player to come from Serie A to England and not play well is really disturbing. “After a year or two, the club might want to dump such a player. “I only hope Newcastle can come up with a winning strategy so Obafemi can raise his game and save his career. “Otherwise, if Newcastle go down, he would have to look elsewhere — and I’m not sure any Premiership side would want to look his way as he has not been playing well.” Toon boss Roeder wants fans to be patient with Martins — as Arsenal were with Thierry Henry. Martins has yet to convince the Toon Army he is worthy of Alan Shearer’s old No 9 shirt. But Roeder said: “I’ve seen enough of Oba in training and games to have complete faith in him. “He’s only 22, he’s come from Italy and a different culture and we have to be more tolerant as far as he is concerned. “Henry did not have an immediate impact when he joined Arsenal but Arsene Wenger was patient with him and the rest, as they say, is history.”
