Wasn't the aid conditions/repayment for the First World War aimed primarily at reducing, as much as possible, the United Kingdom's influence around the world? And once UK's influence had subsided, all aid conditions/repayments for WWII were designed to keep us exactly where the US wanted 'us'?? Special relationship? I imagine it does exist in some quarters of either population but as a whole I doubt it is too important to many. Anyway, with luck, myself and mrs hips will be travelling to the US next year, so any lingering special relationship feelings the Americans have for us 'limeys' will have well and truly evaportated by the time our sojourn ends

Thanks people. Some fantastic advice. I have talked mrs hips into going in the middle of October (the next available time for me) due to the warnings about the heat. I've agreed to have a week in Teneriffee in the summer as a trade-off for going later to the U.S. (women!!! ) As there is so much to do, I think we are looking at NY for two days, off to SF for 3/4 days (something else for a few days) and then LVegas for 3 or so days (spending our wedding anniversary in Vegas). Anyway, please understand that I am really grateful for all the advice/tips. I'll probably do the N.Orleans - Memphis etc another year. And the Niagara Falls, New England, Boston stuff another. Crikey, life's too short and America is so big!
