Because that’s only if it’s handball but ‘accidental’ with the hand / arm in a ‘natural’ position by the goalscorer. I’m not sure I agree as it seems very harsh to me. But that’s the explanation/ interpretation and the supposed recommended decision. So the ref got it right, arguably at least, according to the current guidelines. Either way though the VAR decisions have at least been much quicker than some of the ridiculous delays we’ve seen in the Premier League.

I have always thought that Southgate, despite being articulate and intelligent, is a ex-centre half at heart and over cautious. I think the subs last night suggested that. But I also accept getting the balance right is not as easy as some people make out. His tournament record is excellent. I do think we have sone players who are genuinely world class. But at the same time, could you really say there’s been a finals tournament where we’ve been the best team with the best squad? Probably not.
