So what does Ashley do if Shearer buggers off after the 8 games? Go back and ask Dennis to return? This regime had faith in DW, they believed he was doing a good job and it was all part of the master plan. I think personally that DW was due to leave anyway, either through another job or because the whole regime is away and therefore this was inevitable. If he was already nailed on for more then why say its 8 only? why not just come out and give everyone an even bigger feelgood factor and get even more plaudits than they are doing? Lets just be realistic and if it happens then all the better, I for one though refuse to get my hopes up that this is a brave new Ashley/Shearer dawn. Because he might fail, Shearer isnt stupid, he knows that this is a risk for him and the club. If he fails, he personally may not want to stay. I'd imagine that it is Shearer driving this out into the public domain as these are the terms he has agreed to. If he wanted to stay and take a 3 year contract, he would have got it. Its not like Ashley would have said 'Alan, can you come and manage us, i'm only going to give you 8 games though, thats my offer'. If he keeps us up, he stays. If we go down, the only viable option for Ashley to keep the club afloat is to keep Shearer and he stays. Obviously rationality and this club dont go hand in hand but thats the way i see it.

I think the timing is down to Shearer coming. Quite possibly now instead of the summer though. All good PR and so on. Perhaps I'm being ultra cynical but I think the owner has given me cause to be so far. The evidence suggests it was part of the bargain and Shearer's hand was obviously about as strong as it could get.

I reckon this has been on the table for a while. Its perfect timing by Shearer too, any earlier and he would be more accountable if we go down.
