  2. NEWCASTLE target Nicolas Anelka had an amazing touchline bust-up to spark fresh doubts about his future in Turkey. The French striker exchanged angry words with the Fenerbahce bench after being substituted at the weekend. Anelka's latest sulk came when he was taken off 40 minutes into a league game. Although Anelka has a reputation for being moody, this latest outburst was reckoned by many to be justified and news of the spat will lift Newcastle hopes. The Geordies were warned off bidding for Anelka last week amid hints that Fenerbahce would report them to FIFA for an illegal approach. But now Fener may decide to cash in on Anelka, bought from Manchester City in January. Newcastle have also been told to pay £6million up front for Fulham's new skipper Luis Boa Morte after their offer of £5 million in instalments was rejected.

  6. Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness refused to talk about referee Steve Bennett's performance in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. The former Rangers, Galatasaray and Blackburn Rovers manager was left fuming at Bennett's decision to send off Jermaine Jenas for his first half challenge on Gilberto Silva. With ten men, The Magpies succumbed to a late Thierry Henry penalty and a Robin van Persie strike in their Premiership season-opener at Highbury. Souness was so angered by the events of Sunday that he initially banned himself and his players from speaking to the media after the match. The fiery Scot, however, did speak to Newcastle's official website but refused to talk about the performance of referee Bennett for fear of facing further sanctions from the Football Association. "I am not going to talk about the referee," Souness told the club's official website. "If you speak your mind, you end up in trouble, so I'm not going to speak about him and the same goes for my players. "They are quite rightfully upset at the things that went on out there, and I am protecting them from saying something that might land them in trouble. "Up until the sending off of JJ, we were more than a match for a team who will be challenging for the championship come the end of the season. "We defended well, we were on top in midfield and I felt we could cause them problems in the final third as the game went on. "But that decision changed the game for us. I'm certain that with 11 men on the field we would have got something from the match. "I blame myself to be honest. About 10 seconds before the sending off, I was standing on the touchline shouting to Jermaine to be stronger in the tackle. "He was strong in the tackle, and that happens to him. He is very down about it, and he has every right to be because it was a wrong decision." Souness also believed the challenge that Charles N'Zogbia made on Freddie Ljungberg in the box was not a penalty late on. "It was a dubious penalty, it wasn't a 100 percent penalty yet the referee awarded it," he added. "We've come away with nothing. There were plenty of positives to take from the performance, but we go home empty-handed and the players don't deserve that."

  13. Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate has been told he will make his return from a 16-month injury lay-off with Real Madrid's junior teams. Woodgate, 25, was at the senior squad's pre-season training camp in Austria. But Real coach Wanderley Luxemburgo said: "Woody will have to begin by playing alongside boys of 14 and 15, who are weaker and not as tough. "He has to regain his confidence little by little and then forget the injury he has suffered." Luxemburgo added: "Then he can go on to play alongside the 16 and 17-year-olds and then with the reserves in the second division. "He has not played for at least 14 or 15 months and that is a long time to be out of action. "With only two weeks of full training with the first team behind him he cannot play straight away. "He has worked hard with the rest of his team-mates but he still has to work on other facets of the game and playing kick-abouts will help him a lot." Woodgate is going to become one of our most important recruits of the season Real vice-president Emilio Butragueno Woodgate joined Real in August 2004 for £13.4m but has yet to make his debut. The England international has not played a competitive match since he tore a thigh muscle during Newcastle's game against Chelsea in April 2004. Luxemburgo said it was difficult to predict when the defender would be ready to play for the senior team. "It is impossible to calculate when Woodgate will be able to play at the top level again," said Luxemburgo. "I'm not an oracle. "I do have confidence that he will recover and we are going to give him the opportunity to play with us. "We will let him tell us when he is ready and we will give him time to compete for a place with the other centre-backs and prove that he has recovered." And Real Madrid vice-president Emilio Butragueno is in no doubt how important Woodgate will be for his club. "Woodgate is going to surprise a lot of people because he is going to become one of our most important recruits of the season," said Butragueno. "He has sacrificed a great deal and now is the time for him to get his reward."

  15. Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent's house to visit her 95-year-oldgrandmother and comfort her. When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, "He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning." Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that two people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble. "Oh, no, my dear," replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in on the Ding and out on the Dong. She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, "and if the fucking ice cream truck hadn't come along, he'd still be alive today."

  17. From the beeb - Highbury Sunday, 14 August Kick-off: 1330 BST -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal are without the suspended Jose Antonio Reyes so Dennis Bergkamp will start up front with Thierry Henry. Sol Campbell is still missing with a calf injury but Manuel Almunia is fit again after a broken finger. Alan Shearer has shaken off a calf injury in time to play but Newcastle are without strikers Michael Chopra (knee) and Shola Ameobi (suspension). New signings Scott Parker, Emre and Craig Moore are included but there is no place for Titus Bramble (elbow). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal (from): Lehmann, Almunia, Lauren, Hoyte, Cole, Clichy, Toure, Senderos, Cygan, Gilberto Silva, Fabregas, Flamini, Pires, Ljungberg, van Persie, Hleb, Bergkamp, Henry. Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Carr, Babayaro, Taylor, Elliott, Boumsong, Moore, Parker, Emre, Jenas, Bowyer, Faye, N'Zogbia, Shearer, Dyer, Milner. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "Newcastle can be one of the dangerous teams this season. "No-one expects them to be but they are a good side, especially in the middle of the park where they have made some good additions with Emre and Parker. "They already had a very good midfield, so they're a very good side and a great performance will be needed to win." Newcastle boss Graeme Souness: "We are under no illusions that it will be a very hard game for us but if we can enjoy a bit of luck and perform we can win any game. "We've had them watched and there's things we think we can exploit. "We're going to Highbury with some outstanding players in our ranks. I'm confident and looking forward to it. I know the players will be up for it." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BIG-MATCH FACTS ARSENAL go into this final season at Highbury before the move to Ashburton Grove, desperately wanting to bow out with a fourth Premier League title. They've not finished outside the top two for eight seasons, and proudly boast the longest continuous stay in top flight football. This will be their 80th successive campaign in the highest League. The FA Cup winners hold the record for the longest unbeaten start to a Premiership season. It's a record that will never be broken, as they completed the entire campaign the season before last without defeat. Twelve months ago they extended that unbeaten run to a League record 49, with eight wins and one draw from the first nine outings. They face Newcastle for a Sunday lunchtime fixture, in what will be Arsene Wenger's 499th competitive match in charge. His 500th is scheduled, fittingly, for the trip to Chelsea seven days later. Arsenal have won their opening League fixture in each of the last four seasons, and in six of the last seven. The Gunners have won half of their 24 Premiership matches against Newcastle. That includes the last three at Highbury, culminating in a 1-0 victory last January when Dennis Bergkamp was on target. NEWCASTLE UNITED have been Premiership runners-up twice and ended in the top three four times. But they could only manage 14th last season, and go into their 13th consecutive campaign at the highest level and 76th season in the top tier knowing that an improvement is required on their lowest ever Premiership placing last May. The Magpies have not lost an opening day fixture for four seasons. The last two have both been away, to Leeds and Middlesbrough, and both resulted in 2-2 draws. The Tyneside club hold the record for successive victories at the start of a Premier League season. Kevin Keegan's side managed six on the spin in 1994. The Magpies were 'doubled' by Arsenal last season with two 1-0 defeats, and have not scored against the Gunners in three meetings. HENRY won the Golden Boot award as leading scorer in the Premiership with 25 goals. The French scoring ace is within four goals of Ian Wright's record 185 for Arsenal. NEWCASTLE UNITED Squad profiles Alan SHEARER is the Premiership's leading scorer of all time with 250 goals. SHEARER needs two more to total 275 in English top flight football. The former England skipper is eight short of Jackie Milburn's record of 200 for the Tyneside club. (Milburn's total consists of 177 League goals and 23 in the FA Cup. It does not include the goal he scored in Newcastle's 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the 1951 FA Charity Shield). If he participates, SHEARER will be playing the day after turning 35. If involved, Scott PARKER will be making his 150th career League appearance (Charlton, Norwich, Chelsea and Newcastle). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAST SEASON'S CORRESPONDING GAME: Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle United 23 January 2005 - Ref: Steve Dunn Arsenal scorer: Bergkamp 19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEAD TO HEAD TOTALS League: Arsenal 53 wins, Newcastle 60, Draws 31 Prem: Arsenal 12 wins, Newcastle 7, Draws 5 HEAD TO HEAD at Arsenal League: Arsenal 35 wins, Newcastle 21, Draws 16 Prem: Arsenal 8 wins, Newcastle 3, Draws 1
  18. When Newcastle United last exited Highbury it was against a jarring soundtrack which had absolutely nothing to do with the team bus gearbox. The discordant notes were inspired by hot-headed sound-bites after Arsenal's 1-0 win was overshadowed by Graeme Souness dubbing Craig Bellamy a cheat and the striker calling his manager a liar, with the resultant damage so far-reaching that, seven months on, true harmony is yet to be achieved on Tyneside. Admittedly, Bellamy and Laurent Robert have now departed but Souness ranks as the bookies' favourite to become the new season's first managerial casualty, while Alan Sheareris Newcastle's only fit forward today. Shay Given, reflecting on a summer which has seen eight professionals, including Bellamy, Robert, Nicky Butt and Patrick Kluivert, leave Gallowgate, while only three, Scott Parker, Emre and Craig Moore, have arrived, admitted: "It's a shame but you'd have to ask the chairman and the manager why the players we need aren't here. We're a little bit down to the bare bones at the moment and the situation is not ideal." But not quite irredeemable, either. "This club have had a few ups and downs but that's all water under the bridge," insisted Newcastle's Ireland goalkeeper. "We players have got to try to get more headlines on the back pages instead of the front. Some players had disagreements with the manager last season and it wasn't ideal but, as far as I'm aware, everyone's together now. "The manager's a pretty fair, honest, guy. If you give him all you've got I don't think he'll have any complaints. Obviously, he's had a few disagreements with some players but that wasn't personal, I think. He just wanted more from them on the pitch; it was just him being honest." If diplomacy is hardly Souness's strong suit, he cannot be accused of lacking ambition and duly maintains that signing Michael Owen is "a realistic possibility." Given, though, looked as if he would not be holding his breath. "Michael is a great player, we'd love to have him," he agreed. "But we'd love to have any fit forward." Should potential recruits be deterred by claims that the relationship between Souness and Freddy Shepherd is strained, the former will happily put them straight. "I'm happy here, I don't feel under any pressure at all and there is no problem between the chairman and I whatsoever," stressed Newcastle's manager, whose pursuits of Nicolas Anelka, Mark Viduka and Luis Boa Morte have proved hitherto forlorn. "I have a relationship with the chairman which has worked fantastically well if you go back through the Bellamy and Robert situations. He's supported me in everything I've wanted to do. I've no complaints and I know that between now and the end of the transfer window he'll be on the phone constantly trying to make things happen. "Part of the problem is that the players we're targeting are top players at top clubs who value them highly and don't want to sell. When contact has been made with those players through third parties - and these are top players throughout Europe - no one has said they're not interested. They'd all love to come and play for this club. This is a club big players want to play for - and we've targeted some big ones." Newcastle have also released two devastating, if difficult, talents but Souness believes that, in the case of Bellamy and Robert, less will prove more. "There's far more togetherness now," he claimed. "The players are all thinking the same and all running in the same direction and I think I'll be saying exactly the same at Christmas."
  19. Charlton Athletic striker Darren Bent has been called into the England squad for Wednesday's friendly with Denmark to replace the injured Andy Johnson. Johnson, who scored in Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw with Norwich, played the full 90 minutes at Carrow Road, but collected a hamstring strain. England coach Sven Goran Eriksson opted against calling up the likes of Manchester United's Alan Smith in favour of promoting from the Under-21 side. Bent showed he is a man in form following his brace in Charlton's 3-1 win over Sunderland and got the nod ahead of the former Leeds United striker. "I got a late call that he [Johnson] had a hamstring so we have Darren Bent from the Under-21 squad," said Eriksson.
  20. BORO KEEN ON JENAS SWAP Aug 14 2005 Sunday Mirror By Brian Mcnally JERMAINE JENAS, the unsettled Newcastle United star, is wanted by North-East rivals Middlesbrough. Boro are lining up a sensational swoop for the 22-year-old England international that could involve Australian striker Mark Viduka going in the opposite direction up the A19. Newcastle insist they don't want to sell Jenas but the player is unhappy after describing life on Tyneside as "living in a goldfish bowl." Toon boss Graeme Souness is desperate to bring in at least two strikers after missing out on Fenerbahce's Nicholas Anelka and wants Viduka to spearhead his attack alongside veteran skipper Alan Shearer. Boro's problem is coming up with the cash after splashing out £7.5million on Yakubu, but chairman Steve Gibson hopes a part-exchange deal involving Viduka could be the answer. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, meanwhile, has hit back at criticism of the club's failure to replace Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert. Newcastle go into today's opener at Arsenal with Shearer as the only available striker but Shepherd said: "I have provided Graeme Souness with £22million to spend since he arrived here 11 months ago. I have been accused of many things, but failing to back a Newcastle manager with hard cash is not one of them."
  21. The People TOTTENHAM will have to stump up £10million in cash if they want Newcastle's unsettled midfielder Jermaine Jenas. Spurs' hopes of landing the England star for £5m plus White Hart Lane striker Fredi Kanoute have been dashed. The Geordies have made it clear they want the readies so they can pursue targets they've long identified, rather than be palmed off with a striker they had no designs on. And to make matters worse for Spurs, Middlesbrough have also declared an interest in Jenas. They have the cash to net him and could throw in Mark Viduka as part of the deal. However, Viduka's £60,000-a-week wages might scupper that idea. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants Jenas to be his major capture and to raise funds he is trying to flog Spurs striker Kanoute to Seville for £6m. The Jenas camp are annoyed that Levy has yet to follow up his initial interest with a concrete bid. It was Tottenham's sniffing that triggered the long-running Jenas saga at St James' Park. If Tottenham fail to come up with the £10m that Newcastle are demanding, they risk losing out on the player. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd wants the cash to fund a renewed bid for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen. But he has been half-hearted in moves for Nicolas Anelka and Luis Boa Morte in the past few days. Newcastle were easily brushed off by Fenerbahce when they chased former Arsenal and Liverpool star Anelka. They wanted a meeting but were snubbed. Yet insiders claim a £6m offer would get their man. And the bid for Fulham's Boa Morte came from Newcastle's agent and was not put in writing, which has confused the Portuguese forward and the Craven Cottage club. Ironically, Newcastle boss Graeme Souness, desperate to sign a new striker, would be happy with Kanoute in part-exchange for Jenas, but only if he could get a guarantee from his board that the cash part of the deal would be used to strengthen his squad.
