  3. Shola Ameobi is hoping goals for Newcastle United can give him a chance to impress for England. The Nigeria-born ace, who is yet to feature in The Premiership due to suspension, is setting lofty targets this season. Ameobi is hoping to get the nod by Sven Goran Eriksson for friendlies and will use those games to secure a place on the plane to Germany next summer. "I want to push on and get in the World Cup squad," explained Ameobi. "You have to aim high and that's what I'm doing. "If I play well this season and bang a few goals in, I'll have a chance of playing in a few friendlies and that's what I'm looking for. "I really need to show people what I can do. I view this season as a massive one for me. The World Cup's at the end of it and I'm aiming to get there. "I want to get in that squad and to do that I've got to play well for Newcastle United and score goals. That's my main priority - to score goals."
  4. England and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is set for a return to Liverpool, according to reports. Owen, 25, has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Newcastle while Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has insisted he is not after a striker. But forwards Milan Baros and Djibril Cisse may leave Anfield and pave the way for an Owen comeback. Baros could move to Aston Villa and Cisse is understood to be the subject of interest from French club Lyon. Lyon will be flush with cash with the £26m transfer from Michael Essien's expected switch to Chelsea and their manager Gerard Houllier signed Cisse for Liverpool when in charge of the Merseysiders. Houllier was rumoured to be eyeing Owen but the player appears to favour a move back to the Premiership. Owen's future at Real is in doubt after the Spanish giants signed Robinho and Julio Baptista to complement an attacking force already boasting Raul and Ronaldo. And, with Owen seemingly fifth choice, he has been linked with a leaving the Bernabeu for more regular first-team football in World Cup year. Liverpool received £8m and Antonio Nunez for Owen when they sold him last summer and Real are believed to want £10m for the hitman. But, with Benitez after a right midfielder and centre-back, a loan deal has been muted, despite Real not being too keen on the idea. It may, however, be their main option if Manchester United do not make a firm bid for Owen.

  7. Philippe Christanval claims England international Sol Campbell wants to leave Arsenal. French defender Christanval spent pre-season training with The Gunners after cancelling his contract with Marseille earlier in the summer. Though the centre half impressed Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal boss did not offer his compatriot a deal due to being sufficiently stocked in the defensive department. Christanval, though, has not relinquished hope of moving to Highbury as he has yet to speak to Wenger about his failed trial. The stopper has revealed a decision on being handed a contract in North London hinges on the future of Campbell. The former Tottenham Hotspur ace is currently injured but Christanval has claimed that Campbell has asked to quit the club. Campbell was left out of the starting line-up for last season's FA Cup final, having been injured in the months leading up to the win over Manchester United. Now, Christanval has suggested that Campbell wants to move on but Arsenal are yet to receive any firm offers for the England stalwart. "I am still waiting for an answer," commented Christanval about his prospects with Arsenal. "I know Arsene confirmed on the club's website it won't be settled but he didn't call me yet. "During the pre-season period, Arsene told me he was keen to sign me but only if he parts with one of his central defenders. "Sol Campbell asked to leave. "Considering what I know, he hasn't had any concrete propositions yet. "But the transfer window is not closed yet. I still have hope for Arsenal. "England has the most exciting league to me. Arsenal asked me to join them for a training period - that is not for nothing."

  14. Newcastle United's man of the moment Scott Parker has revealed that he came within a whisker of missing his Premiership debut for the club at Highbury on Sunday. It's a long time since I saw such a committed debut from a Newcastle player and at times, especially when 10-man United were under pressure from Arsenal in the second half, Parker was throwing himself into tackles. It was something which did not escape United's travelling Toon Army and Parker is sure to get a fantastic reception in Saturday's game with West Ham at St James' Park. However, he revealed: "To tell the truth, I didn't train at all in the week leading up to Sunday's game because of a hamstring injury and that's why I missed our game with Bray Wanderers in Ireland. "As a result, I was really doubtful for the Arsenal game and it wasn't until nine o'clock on Sunday morning that it was decided I would play. "I know I didn't last the full 90 minutes but in the circumstances I was delighted at the way I came through after being away from the Premiership action for so long with a broken bone in my foot at Chelsea." Unfortunately, Parker and United's other impressive new boy, Emre, got off to a losing start in the Premiership in a black-and-white shirt, mainly because blundering referee Steve Bennett had them down to 10 men for the last hour after his ludicrous sending-off of Jenas. Parker added: "There is no doubt the referee made a rick, which was a pity, really, considering the way things were going for us before JJ was sent off. At no time did I ever think it was a sending-off offence. "Yet even when we were down to 10 men I thought we looked solid and I really believed we would hang on for what would have been a great point. "I know that a lot of people have said that they did not think it was a penalty when Freddie Ljungberg went down after the challenge from Charles N'Zogbia but, to be fair to the referee, from where I was I thought straight away it was a penalty." An exhausted Parker came off after Thierry Henry had slotted away the spot-kick and when I came across him after the match he was sitting in his full strip in the Highbury tunnel and could hardly drag himself out for the warm-down. Like the rest of the United first-team squad, Parker was given yesterday off and he stayed down in London with his family. But he flew back up last night and was in for training today with those of his colleagues not on international duty. However, many more performances like that on Sunday and Parker can expect another call from Sven-Goran Eriksson, with the England coach having been an interested spectator at Highbury.
  15. Aug 16 2005 By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle Newcastle United have moved back in for French international striker Nicolas Anelka. Chairman Freddy Shepherd has acted quickly after hearing reports from Turkey of Anelka's bust-up with the Fenerbahce bench after being substituted five minutes before the interval at the weekend. And my information is that Shepherd is ready to fly to a halfway point between Newcastle and Istanbul tomorrow to talk to Fenerbahce officials. The only thing to glean from this is that Anelka, who wants to come to St James' Park, is now forcing Fenerbahce's hand - something United's other top target Luis Boa Morte has failed to do at Fulham. Fenerbahce actually sent United a letter last week asking them to back off over their bid to sign Anelka and threatened that they would report them to FIFA for making an illegal approach. But now it appears that the Turkish outfit have had a change of heart and if they are willing to let Anelka go for slightly more than the £4.5m they paid for him in January then the French international could be in a black-and-white shirt by the time West Ham come to St James' Park on Saturday. That is more than can be said about Boa Morte as Fulham are now digging their heels in harder than ever. Indeed, Fulham boss Chris Coleman said: "Newcastle haven't come anywhere near meeting our asking price for Boa. "The deadline is now up because we cannot sell one of our best players. Everybody has his price but each week there is another million on Boa's head, as far as I am concerned. "Even if Newcastle were to offer £10m for him I would have to go out and find a replacement and it is too late for that." Both Shepherd and Graeme Souness were encouraged by United's plucky show at Highbury on Sunday and they both believe that the acquisition of two players like Anelka and Boa Morte would turn them into contenders for a Champions League place. They are also aware that Tottenham, and perhaps Arsenal, are still keen to sign Jermaine Jenas but it's becoming more likely that United won't be taking striker Robbie Keane as part of an exchange deal. Souness admires Keane's goalscoring abilities but he would prefer the pace and power Anelka and Boa Morte would give him up front.
  16. Jermaine Jenas linked up with Sven-Göran Eriksson's England squad yesterday intent on putting a troubled start to the season behind him and restoring his reputation for club and country. The former Nottingham Forest midfielder has been the subject of furious transfer speculation this summer and has admitted to team mates and his manager that he felt unsettled on Tyneside during the close-season. Sunday's dismissal at Highbury completed a miserable month for Jenas but the subsequent withdrawal of that red card - the Football Association downgraded the player's punishment to a yellow yesterday - and an encouraging reception from the Magpies' travelling fans encouraged the Tottenham target. Now the former PFA Young Player of the Year has resolved to retain his place at the heart of Newcastle's midfield against West Ham United on Saturday and recapture the form which propelled him into Eriksson's squad as a promising teenager. Jenas has stayed tight-lipped on his immediate future and there was renewed speculation that he had kicked his last ball for the Magpies on Sunday following his 32nd-minute dismissal. Spurs are reported to be offering £5m plus Robbie Keane for Sir Bobby Robson's signing but the Newcastle youngster has told England colleagues he is prepared to fight for his place at St James's Park. A three-match suspension would have hampered that ambition but Jenas is free to face the Hammers this weekend after Sunday's referee Steve Bennett performed an unlikely U-turn and admitted a high profile mistake. "The Football Association can confirm that Jermaine Jenas's dismissal during the Arsenal versus Newcastle United match has been reduced to a caution," explained a Soho Square spokesman yesterday. "Having reviewed a video of the incident, match referee Steve Bennett requested that the red card be downgraded to a yellow card. "In accordance with FA rules, the matter was considered by a disciplinary commission which confirmed the decision. Jenas will therefore not serve any suspension." Although Newcastle had hoped for justice after Jenas' clumsy tackle on Gilberto was initially deemed overly aggressive, the club was clearly delighted with Bennett's decision. "Mr Bennett has been in touch via letter with our manager, Graeme Souness, Jermaine Jenas and the rest of the squad to apologise for his error of judgment during Sunday's game against Arsenal," explained a club statement on United's website. Souness, in keeping with his decision to stay silent on the original incident, was unavailable for comment. But if the Scot feels vindicated by the FA's judgment then he will still feel aggrieved that an official's error of judgement inevitably cost his team a share of the spoils against Arsene Wenger's former champions. What will encourage players, managers and chairmen everywhere is the speed with which the game's governing body dealt with one of the weekend's biggest and most controversial talking points. And FA chief executive Brian Barwick added: "A headline story has been dealt with quickly and fairly. "This was the first weekend of the season and that was a high profile incident that was dealt with by Monday lunchtime. Hopefully that's a positive reaction. "At the start of any season there will be some incidents where you can say that was right or wrong. "We're in the settling-in process and I think what is indicative of that is the Jenas card being reduced."
  17. What are you really scared of?
  18. Jermaine Jenas, the Newcastle United and England midfielder, was edging closer to a move to Tottenham Hotspur last night for a sum of £5 million plus Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane. Newcastle's chairman, Freddy Shepherd, is understood to have re-opened talks about the unsettled Jenas with his White Hart Lane counterpart, Daniel Levy, yesterday, following the latter's return from holiday. Jenas recently expressed his dissatisfaction with life on Tyneside, which he likened to being in a "goldfish bowl" and Shepherd is reluctant to keep hold of an unhappy employee, especially when his club is over-endowed with midfielders but short of attackers. One complication for the two chairmen is that Keane, 25, is believed to favour staying on at Tottenham instead of joining Newcastle. Only 10 days ago Newcastle manager Graeme Souness said Keane "is not the kind of striker I am looking for at the moment" and that stance might force Spurs to meet the £10 million asking price in cash. Souness is hoping to sign Real Madrid striker Michael Owen and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte is still wanted for the left-wing berth. Nottingham-born Jenas, 22, is valued at £10 million by Newcastle who have already rejected Levy's £8 million offer for a player signed by Sir Bobby Robson from Nottingham Forest for £5 million in February 2002. Publicly, Souness has insisted that Jenas is an integral part of his long-term plans but it is believed that privately he does not have a high regard for the player. At the weekend, Jenas was sent off for fouling Arsenal's Gilberto Silva after Souness had found it necessary to order his charge to be more aggressive. "About 10 seconds before the tackle I was standing on the touchline telling JJ to be stronger in the tackle," Souness said. "He was stronger in the tackle and that happened to him." As well as positive news regarding his eagerly sought-after move away from Tyneside, Jenas would also have been lifted by the announcement that his red card during the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal had been downgraded to a yellow by referee Steve Bennett and that he had therefore avoided a three-game suspension. After reviewing the incident Bennett concluded it was an "orange card" offence and gave Jenas the benefit of the doubt. A Newcastle spokesman said that Bennett "had been in touch with Souness, Jenas and the rest of the squad to apologise for his error of judgement during Sunday's game against Arsenal."
