Its always been obvious Owen is Shearer's replacement. Same goal threat, same world standing, proven international, massive transfer fee required, complete self belief that they are the best. Its also obvious from Freddie, Souness and everyone who's spoken about it at the club saying Owen IS Shearer's replacement because nobody else could have done it. It was clear the club was putting a shit load of money aside for when the day came we had to get Big Al's replacement with the intention of getting somebody worthy and we certainly have. When the chance to get Owen arose, out came the money that had been kept for Al's replacement. We have not thus far bought Bellamy or Kluivert's replacement and this is where the problem lies. Shearer is near the end of his career and can't play all the time and Owen may get injured. Suddenly we could be looking at Shola and Chopra, unless Dyer and Luque happen to be fit and scoring well as a striker. There is no way that a team finishes in the top 5 for 3 years and qualifies for the 2nd phase of the champions league with anything other than a good spirit in the dressing room, not to mention all the times we came back from a goal down in league games, and have such a fantastic record in our immediate game after the European ones.
