Jimbo 172
Portsmouth v Newcastle Fratton Park Saturday, 14 April Kick-off: 1500 BST -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell remains a doubt with an Achilles injury while right-back Glen Johnson (knee) is also sidelined. Lauren returns to boost the squad after being rested. Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given is out of their trip to Fratton Park with a groin injury so Steve Harper deputises. Kieron Dyer (hamstring), Scott Parker (ankle), Craig Moore (groin) and Antoine Sibierski (knee) could all be fit to play some part for the Magpies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Portsmouth (from): James, Lauren, Primus, Stefanovic, Campbell, Traore, O'Neil, Davis, Mvuemba, Taylor, Hughes, Kranjcar, Kanu, Lualua, Pamarot, Douala, O'Brien, Ashdown. Newcastle (from): Harper, Srnicek, Solano, Carr, Babayaro, Edgar, Taylor, Bramble, Onyewu, Moore, Ramage, Huntington, Butt, Parker, Milner, Duff, Emre, N'Zogbia, Pattison, Troisi, Martins, Dyer, Sibierski, Luque, Carroll, LuaLua. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp feels Newcastle have underachieved this season "They have some great players there and looking at their squad they should be much higher. "There is a lot of talent in the team and for us to be above teams like Newcastle in the table is terrific - we certainly haven't broken the bank here. "It has been a fantastic season for us whatever happens now. We just want to finish as high as we can." Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder on recent criticism of his players: "I have to stand up for my players, the players I know give 100% in every single game. "I see these players in training, I see these players after a game we've lost and they are devastated, really upset. "It really means something to them, winning in a Newcastle shirt." PORTSMOUTH and Newcastle clash at Fratton Park, both still clinging on to hopes of European football next season. A seventh place finish in the Premiership may be good enough for Uefa Cup qualification this season. Pompey are one place and two points outside the top seven, and five points outside the top six. But they still have to host Liverpool and Arsenal, and face a potentially crucial visit to Everton. The Hampshire club are on course for their highest finish in 52 years, since a top three placing in 1954-55. Manager Harry Redknapp will want the side that turned up and sensationally beat leaders Manchester United 2-1 in their last home game on Saturday night, rather than the one that surprisingly lost 4-2, away to bottom of the table Watford on Easter Monday. Goalkeeper David James is set to make a fourth attempt to break the Premiership goalkeeping record of 141 clean sheets. Pompey have never beaten Newcastle in the Premiership - all three home fixtures in this League have been drawn. Pompey's last top flight victory over the Magpies was over a half century ago (3-1, home on 5 March 1955). NEWCASTLE UNITED make their longest domestic journey of the season, with extremely faint hopes of Uefa Cup football and more realistic ones of qualifying via the Intertoto Cup once again. The Magpies are 10 points outside the top six, and cannot climb from 10th place, even with victory at Fratton Park. Glenn Roeder's side have failed to score in six of their last eight League and European matches. The 1-2 triumph at Sheffield United on 7 April, is their only win and only goals scored in six Premiership matches. Portsmouth were fourth in the table when they met at St James' Park in November, and Antoine Sibierski's goal was enough for all three points for the home club. Now the Tyneside outfit are aiming to 'double' Pompey for the first time since the 1990-91 season (second tier). It was in the 1958-59 season, when the north east club last recorded home and away victories over Pompey in a top flight campaign, winning this corresponding fixture 1-5. Newcastle have already taken six points off Tottenham, while Portsmouth have been 'doubled' by Bolton and Chelsea. REFEREE Chris Foy (St Helens, Merseyside) SEQUENCES/RECENT FORM PORTSMOUTH Club stats Fixtures 8th 46 points Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 7th Lowest could fall: 9th 1. Superior to Newcastle by two places and five points. Won one more Premiership match (12 to the Magpies' 11). 2. Conceded four goals in the last five minutes of Premiership matches this season. Only Sheffield United have been equally that vulnerable at that time. 3. The current tally of 46 points exceeds their biggest ever total for an entire Premiership campaign. 4. Looking for a third home win over northern opposition in four games at Fratton Park. Defeat to Chelsea was sandwiched between two 2-1 victories over Manchester City and Manchester United. 5. The four remaining matches are against Aston Villa (a), Liverpool (h), Everton (a) and Arsenal (h). NEWCASTLE UNITED Club stats Fixtures 10th 41 points Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 10th Lowest could fall: 12th 1. Will want to at least match last season's seventh placed finish. 2. Need to score three goals to total 800 all time in the Premier League. 3. Three goals shy of conceding 650 in Premiership history. 4. Kept only six clean sheets in the top tier this term. Tottenham have managed fewer than any other club (five). 5. One of two clubs not to have conceded in stoppage time in a Premiership game this season. Tottenham is the other. 6. Lost six of the last eight away League games, and been beaten 10 times on the road in total in the top table. Only the bottom four clubs also have double figures in the away defeats column. 7. Failed to score in nine matches on their Premiership travels. Only West Ham have been more shot shy in their away League games - failing to find the net in 11. 8. The season closes out with matches against Chelsea (h), Reading (a), Blackburn (h) and Watford (a). KEY PLAYER NOTES/POTENTIAL MILESTONES PORTSMOUTH Squad profiles Nwankwo KANU is Portsmouth's leading scorer with 12 goals - 10 of which are Premiership goals. KANU is a hat trick shy of 50 career League goals in England. If he keeps goal as usual, David JAMES will be making his 127th consecutive Premiership appearance (Manchester City and Portsmouth). JAMES is the only remaining player to have been on the field for every minute of every one of Portsmouth's Premiership matches this season. The 36 year old England International keeper has kept 141 clean sheets in the Premiership, and has equalled David Seaman's record in this League. (James played 84 minutes of the 90 in one of the clean sheets contributing to the 141, when in goal for Aston Villa in the 4-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Valentines Day 2000). Lomano Tresor LUALUA needs a brace to total 50 goals in English club football (Colchester, Newcastle and Portsmouth). LUALUA joined Newcastle from Colchester in September 2000. He signed for Portsmouth in February 2004, initially on loan. He made 88 appearances for the Magpies (59 in the Premiership) and scored nine goals (five League). Andy O'BRIEN made 172 appearances (120 in the Premiership) and scored seven goals (six League) for Newcastle, before signing for Portsmouth in a £2m move in June 2005. If named in the 11, Gary O'NEIL will be making his 150th start in a Portsmouth shirt. If on the field from the outset, Matthew TAYLOR will be making his 300th club career start (Luton and Portsmouth). NEWCASTLE UNITED Squad profiles Obafemi MARTINS is Newcastle's top scorer with 17 goals - 11 of which are Premiership goals. Kieron DYER is a hat trick shy of 50 career club goals. If on the field from the opening whistle, Nolberto SOLANO will be making his 250th start in English League football (Newcastle and Aston Villa). If he plays, Steven TAYLOR will be making his 50th Premiership appearance for the Magpies. TheInspiration 1
Bench: Pav, Bramble, Ramage, Onyewu, Luque Three defenders and no Carroll on the bench. Also chances are we're playing 4-5-1 with Oba up front alone... EDIT: Carroll aparently in instead of Bramble. Bramble basically gone then. geordieshandy 0
Still two defenders on the bench is a bit much really. Unless he's really concerned about the fitness of one of his defenders. All the panel on Soccer Saturday going for a home win.

I don't mind playing 4-5-1 against teams with spark and creation in midfield, but pompey haven't been scoring of late. I would have though the best idea would play a 4-4-2 on the counter, using Dyer and Oba's pace. esepcially with Campbells assured presence missing at their back line. geordieshandy 0
Mustn't think Dyer and Sibierski are fit enough. Watch out for some huge high balls up to the static midgets up front.
