Newcastle midfielder Emre returns to the squad to face Middlesbrough after completing his three-match ban.

Striker Mark Viduka could return from a calf injury but full-back Jose Enrique remains a doubt with a similar problem.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate will be able to give Afonso Alves his debut if he is given international clearance.

There are fitness concerns over Jeremie Aliadiere (groin) and Emanuel Pogatetz (ankle), while Turkey striker Tuncay Sanli (hamstring) is definitely out.

Newcastle (from): Given, Harper, Carr, N'Zogbia, Enrique, Cacapa, Taylor, Edgar, Butt, Smith, Milner, Duff, Emre, Barton, LuaLua, Owen, Viduka, Ameobi, Carroll.

Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, Young, Pogatetz, Huth, Wheater, Arca, Rochemback, Boateng, O'Neil, Downing, Aliadiere, Alves, Mido, Jones, Grounds, Riggott, Johnson, Dong-Gook.

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan:

"The players individually at this football club are all top-class players. If we can get them playing as a team, that would be a strong team.

"That is the secret of football. It is not getting the players individually playing well - that helps - but to get them to play collectively well and then the individuals to make the difference.

"That could be quite a few at this club. Damien Duff is a player who can turn a game; certainly Charles N'Zogbia can; I think James Milner can; certainly Michael Owen can and Mark Viduka can."

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate:

"It's looking like Sunday's game will come too soon for Afonso [Alves].

"We're now just waiting for him to get a visa so he can get back into the country.

"There are players like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the Dutch league and Afonso was out-scoring him, that shows you the measure of his achievements."

BIG-MATCH FACTS

Kevin Keegan is hoping the 112th Tyne-Tees league 'derby' (My quotes) with Middlesbrough will provide his first victory in his current spell as Newcastle manager.

The Magpies have recorded a goalless home draw with Bolton and back-to-back 3-0 away defeats to Arsenal in the FA Cup and Premier League since Keegan has been selecting the side. They have not won in seven league outings.

Middlesbrough beat Wigan 1-0 at the Riverside on Tuesday night and extended their undefeated streak in all competitions to five. They are just two points behind their north-east rivals going into this 24th Premier League meeting.

All north-east Premier League derbies so far this season have been drawn. Each of the three clubs in the region has gained two points from two matches against their local rivals.

Middlesbrough have only won three of the previous 23 Tyne-Tees derbies in this league. Their only maximum on Tyneside was 1-2 on 17 March 2001, when Alen Boksic scored both their goals.

Would like to see us go something like:

Given

Carr Taylor Cacapa Enrique

Duff Barton Emre N'Zogbia

Owen Viduka

2-1 to the toon

Looks liek Enrique will be unfit so id have charlie at LB, jimmy at RW and Duff at LW. Id also rather play Harper in CM than Barton

10 minutes gone, Newcastle have had 86% possession. With Aliadiere upfront on his own for Boro I fully expect us to win this.

Edit: Our team, for anyone interested, is: Given, Carr, Cacapa, Taylor, N'Zogbia, Barton, Emre, Duff, Owen, Smith.

I think the bench is Harper, Edgar, Milner, Ameobi, Viduka.

Edit again: Butt's playing, too.

Smith fighting very bravely, it must be said. Winning headers and tackles like never before.

Where's the goal going to come from though?

I was about to say I was quite impressed with his play so far. We're getting plenty of corners, can we score from one of them? Big Claudio?

If the ref's got anything to do with it the game'll be a 0-0 draw!

Really hope Wheater gets his red in the second half.

We need to go back what we done in the first 20 mins, pass the ball. These hoofs are hopeless, their CBs will win every header, no matter how hard Smith is trying.

Fucking joke of a ref

The problem is no comebacks - they are on a salary and never get dropped anyway. 3 weeks after giving that ludicrous goal at Chelsea, Riley was refereeing us in London again.

Dean today has let them get away with constant thuggery - I hope he doesn't completely bottle it like with the goal.
