So long story short I've had an unconditional offer from UCLAN to study Computer Game Design :icon_lol:

UCLAN is full of dick heads.

So is Manchester... while we're at sweeping generalisations eh!

appropriate that I am soon to have attended both then :D

It never ceases to amaze me as the number of absurd courses offered increases year after year.

Wonder what they're offering at UK this year? That's the University of Kibblesworth for those not in the know.

Don't think Computer Games Design is any more absurd than any other particular design course. It's a growth industry and while the competition may be fierce, it's unlikely that the industry is going any where soon. Doesn't need the backing of a big publisher like Journos do, he could (theoretically) write the code for a successful game in his bedroom, like the SI fellas did.

for some reason its still looked down on compared to other media industries despite being absolutely enormous and still growing it seems like somethine people reckon anyone can do, its why filmmakers like to try and shove out a game every now and then even though they arem almost without exception, bloody awful

Computer game design isnt a growth industry :D It peaked with the Megadrive/Snes and had a high point with the PS2/Wii. Its on its way back down now though

the Wii that is still on sale, releasing games and selling millions of units?

I'd think there are more people working in gaming now than there ever were

Course it is, the money being spent on and by the gaming industry dwarfs the figures from back in the day. The strides in technology and way the console is no longer soley the purview of children and geeks has meant it's slowly but surely being taken seriously. Things like the Wii have shown it doesn't necessarily have to be a lonely pursuit, it geared towards parties. The Playstation and the 360 aren't simply gaming hubs, they're media centres, something Microsoft is desperate to hurry along. The sooner they can lock the tv, the pc, the music system all together the happier they'll be.

I think you're just, yet again, being obstinate for the sake of it.

Ergo, you're a cock.

:D hit me where it hurts.

Each to their own Andrew, Im not sure that picking a course cos its easy is the way to go like. Are you having to shell out 3 years tuition fees for it too? Honest question, are there many prospects for computer game designers these days? Id have thought it was a pretty specialist job and there wouldnt be a particularly high turnover?

Should have done an English degree so he could become a nurse eh? :icon_lol:

Yeah cos English gets you a job in nowt. Teaching, Journalism, EFL just off the top of my head :icon_lol:

Funny you mention it, but UCLAN is held in extremely high regard for its journalism courses.

So that's teaching, journalism and teaching again? And given decent jobs in journalism are rarer than hen's teeth, not to mention the pay not being great and a journalism qualification being preferable, plus the fact you'd need an extra qualification to become a teacher you've got an idea of how useful an English degree is. I should know, I've got one.

The main point is though Andrew is obviously delighted to have gotten on this course and all the likes of you and knicker-sniffer want to do is piss on his chips. Says it all tbh.

I have a friend who completed a game design course it looked class.

He's not working in the industry as of yet but most creative industries are really hard to crack and he sees it more as a long term ambition.

Anyway, enjoy it!

If I've got this right Andrew you've changed from a degree in civil engineering (in Manchester?) to a degree in computer game design at Preston? Got to be honest here, that doesn't sound like a great career move to me. Fair enough you may enjoy it more, but in three years time you run the risk of being seriously in debt with a degree many employers will not take seriously (rightly or wrongly).

It sounds to me you've taken a soft option where something more vocational, like, erm, civil engineering, might benefit you more in the long term. Hopefully I'm talking bollocks like.

On a wider note, I genuinely feel sorry for graduates this year. Prospects have never been bleaker.

I didn't exactly have a choice on that one like

also this "soft option" opinion is a right load as those whos done any software engineering/programming will testify especially to the level of current games being put out there

Ye've got some bedside manner you like. I bet the patients must wait with baited breath for your cheery bed pans every morning.

You dont empty many bed pans in A&E or on a mental health ward which are the only 2 hospital environments ive worked in. Dont let that spoil a perfectly crap recurring joke though.

So the place your sunny disposition has shined have been A&E and a Mental Health Ward? Definitely two places you want an objectionable arsehole
