At the end of the implementation period it will have been nearly five years since the vote. At that time if there is no agreement on how to keep the Irish border open how is it going to be resolved by a further few months of a backstop? How can such a solution be time limited? As for the backstop it seems as though we are heading for UK wide customs union and a NI wide Single Market. The U.K. can then make a sovereign decision to align with SM on goods too which would eradicate virtually all need for new checks anywhere. It would be the same as staying in, but with some illusion of sovereignty thrown in. But we'd pay more and have no say, so have less sovereignty. Cracking. Or we can leave the single market, have to stick with EU regulations in all trade we do with them, and have trade frictions, because goods will have to be checked for compliance at the border. Why? Because we wont be subject to the ECJ so the EU will have to check imports are kosher before entry. Trade frictions means Nissan etc are dead. And staying in the CU means no independent trade deals. First, the draft agreement says "unless and until". Not time limited and EU won't agree to make it so, because then it's not a backstop. Secondly, the backstop isn't going to change the situation.
