Kid Dynamite 1,228
A bat and ball cost £1.10. The bat costs one pound more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

ewerk 6,526
Unless I've got it massively wrong I assume that this is a trick question for five year olds?
Rayvin 1,333
I dunno, it does require a bit of thought. Someone has got it wrong based on the poll...

Happy Face 27
X + y = 1.1 And X = y + 1 So Y + 1 + y = 1.1 So 2y = 0.1 So Y = 0.

Happy Face 27
...and 5 year olds complain that they'll never need to know algebra after school!
Dr Gloom 3,070
Five year olds and Dr Gloom. Always been a bit dyslexic with numbers. Had to resit GCSE maths. Ironically, i married a mathematician.

Kid Dynamite 1,228
I think most people say £1 first, that's the point. Took me a minute to get my head around it
Meenzer 4,194
The point was clear from the thread title, aye.
Renton 2,143
I think most people say £1 first, that's the point. Took me a minute to get my head around it You mean 10 pence I think.

Dr Gloom 3,070
Dyscalculic. I didn't even know that was a thing. That can be my excuse from now on. I struggled to get my C in maths at GCSE, ended up having to get a tutor to help me pass the resit. Got As and Bs in everything else but numbers were always my kryptonite. Meenzer 4,194
Lack of a 50 cent option disappointing.

Sorry, have to laugh, you seem to be suggesting "numbers" are just a side issue. Numbers are as important as words are. Can't see many admitting words as being their kryptonite though. Kid Dynamite 1,228
You mean 10 pence I think. Aye It was clear the answer wasn't 10p but it took me a good minute to figure out why
Howmanheyman 4,640
I must be five because I think 10p.

I used the kryptonite metaphor because maths class made me feel like I was dying inside, I was that bad at it.
Happy Face 27
I must be five because I think 10p. But if the bat was £1 more (£1.10) then the bat and ball would cost £1.

Without words we'd be grunting at each other like the rest of the primates.

Without words we'd be grunting at each other like the rest of the primates. Without numbers, there would be no science and no technology. No engineering. No economy etc. We could communicate with sign language without words.
